"Don't go!" Wang Chao blurted out.
Yang Mengying didn't expect Wang Chao's reaction to be so intense. She turned around and looked closely at him, only to see his face streaked with tears. For some reason, this big boy who had been joking and carefree all day suddenly appeared so sad and lost. After hesitating for a moment, she walked over to Wang Chao's side, gently patting his back and saying, "What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
Wang Chao shook his head. He didn't know what was wrong with him. He couldn't understand why he had said that, but deep down, he felt that he absolutely could not let Yang Mengying leave. If she did, something he didn't want to see would surely happen. Yang Mengying spoke softly, "It's okay. I've had nightmares before too. I'm going to work now; you can stay home."
As she said this, Yang Mengying began to get up to leave. At that moment, as she stood up, a wave of intense sadness surged within Wang Chao. He suddenly grabbed Yang Mengying's hand. She was taken aback and turned back to say, "Don't do this; don't you already have a girlfriend? Why haven't I seen you go visit her lately..." But Wang Chao didn't let go, his eyes fixed intently on Yang Mengying.
"I'll take care of you!" As Wang Chao uttered those words, he suddenly felt a splitting headache. Something in his mind kept flashing by like leaves floating on the sea—sometimes close, sometimes far, sometimes high, sometimes low. Just when he thought he could grasp it, it would stir up waves and vanish without a trace.
Yang Mengying heard Wang Chao's words but didn't know how to respond. She couldn't understand why he suddenly said that. In that moment, all she could think about was what Wang Chao had said; everything else—work, documents—was cast aside. Just then, the doorbell rang, and Wang Chao said, "It must be Yiyi."
Yang Mengying looked at Wang Chao, puzzled about how he could tell it was Yiyi just from the sound of the doorbell; after all, it could also be the milk delivery. They both approached the door and opened it to find little Sister smiling brightly at Wang Chao. Without saying a word, Wang Chao picked up Yiyi and held her in one arm while taking Yang Mengying's hand with the other.
As they walked through the neighborhood, passersby looked at them; anyone would think they were a happy family of three.
But Wang Chao felt that something was off. He glanced around at the elderly dancing in the square and those playing cards despite the winter chill—adults and children hurrying by for school or work—everything seemed just like any other day. Suddenly, among the dancing crowd, a number of crazed individuals surged forth from nowhere.
They were covered in blood and attacked anyone they saw, completely losing their sanity.
People immediately scattered in all directions amidst cries of despair and shouts of panic. Wang Chao grabbed Yang Mengying's hand and ran away from the chaos as more crazed individuals closed in from all sides. Suddenly, Yang Mengying tripped over a stone and fell to her knees. A few crazed individuals pounced on her instantly. Wang Chao summoned all his strength and kicked them away one by one.
But even more crazies were rushing toward them. Just as Wang Chao managed to pull Yang Mengying up with one hand, he was overwhelmed by the crazed mob again. In an instant, countless wounds were torn into his body as he struggled against them. "Wang Chao! You have to run! Don't worry about me! Just go!" Yang Mengying shouted desperately as more crazies swarmed over her, her voice filled with unwillingness and sorrow before being drowned out completely.
Wang Chao fought back the sadness as he held Yiyi tightly and ran into the distance. Looking back, he saw that Yang Mengying had already been completely engulfed by those crazed individuals, and nothing was visible anymore.
Sadness, endless sadness, enveloped him, as if the entire world had turned into a black-and-white photograph, devoid of any color.
As he continued to run, Wang Chao suddenly felt the weight in his arms lighten. At that moment, Yiyi was shot away by one of the madmen. Wang Chao spun around and executed a sweeping kick, knocking the madman to the ground. At the same time, he reached out and caught Yiyi as she fell, gently placing her on the ground. But more of those crazed individuals surged forward.
Before Wang Chao could embrace Yiyi again, four or five madmen had already grabbed her. It seemed they were fighting over food; they lifted Yiyi high and began to tear at her. The small Yiyi couldn't withstand such immense force and was instantly torn into countless pieces, not even having the chance to utter a word. Wang Chao stood frozen in shock.
Having grown up without parents or friends, the two most important people in his life were Yang Mengying and Yiyi. Now, both of them had been brutally killed right before his eyes, and he felt utterly powerless. He was unwilling to accept it; he was frustrated, but there was nothing he could do. He hated his own weakness for not being able to protect those he wanted to save.
After devouring Yiyi, the group of madmen turned their attention toward Wang Chao. As he watched them swarm from all directions, deep fear gripped him. He wanted to stay and fight these madmen, but seeing their fierce approach made him hesitate. Finally, he turned around and fled. Running—Wang Chao's world seemed to be reduced to that single word.
It felt as though the entire world had been overtaken by these madmen. Wang Chao dodged around until he finally spotted an unlocked store in the distance.
"If I can get in there and barricade myself, I can definitely escape! Yes, that's it!" With this thought in mind, Wang Chao quickened his pace. He moved with a speed he had never imagined possible; in what felt like the blink of an eye, he reached the store's entrance. However, as soon as he touched the door, he froze.
His instincts told him that he had to run inside; it was his only chance for survival. Yet deep down inside him, a strong resistance arose against this thought. His heart warned him not to go in—if he did, he would plunge into deep despair and sorrow. That familiar feeling returned as Wang Chao grasped the doorknob; his head throbbed painfully.
The group of madmen closed in behind him, yet Wang Chao still found it hard to decide.
Should he flee recklessly or turn around and confront these madmen?
Is it survival or death?
Everything is in Wang Chao's hands.
