As soon as Little Grudge regained her strength, she transformed into a wisp of black mist, lifting Wang Chao into the air as if he were in an elevator. Wang Chao lay flat, arms and legs spread wide, feeling quite comfortable. Although the black mist moved at a leisurely pace, it was still much faster than climbing up by himself. After about an hour, they reached the edge of the cliff.
Standing atop the cliff, Wang Chao turned to Little Grudge and said, "I’m heading to the Safe Zone now. I need to know if you’re coming with me. Seriously, I mean it—are you going to follow me even when I go to the bathroom?" His expression was grave; he genuinely feared that Little Grudge might do something embarrassing.
Little Grudge shot him a disdainful look and replied, "Get lost."
Without further ado, they set off toward the Safe Zone, which was not far away—about an hour's journey. Along the way, Wang Chao pondered deeply. Xiao Wei and the others must have sent someone to look for him, but the cave was nestled in the cliffs; unless someone knew beforehand, it would be impossible for anyone to guess that there was someone inside. Thus, even though they were only an hour away from the Safe Zone, they hadn’t found Wang Chao.
However, Wang Chao had no idea what their situation was like. He wondered if the high walls of the Safe Zone had been repaired after being destroyed. Moreover, he was uncertain whether time in that cycle aligned with real-world time. Still, he speculated that time moved faster in that world compared to outside; otherwise, even if one were trapped in a cycle with slowed metabolism, it wouldn’t be possible to endure for an entire year.
Before long, they arrived at the outskirts of the Safe Zone. Wang Chao looked around and saw that the damaged walls had been repaired; all the bones scattered outside had completely disappeared. He slapped his forehead in disbelief at how overgrown with weeds the buildings had become. "Damn it! I’ve been stuck at the bottom of this cliff for over three months?"
Though it wasn’t a full year, three months was unbearable for him—it felt like spring had directly turned into summer!
Shaking his head, Wang Chao continued toward the Safe Zone. In the distance, he could vaguely see the large hole left by the Giant Worm’s emergence, but its corpse was nowhere to be found—perhaps it had turned to ash. As he approached the gates of the Safe Zone with Little Grudge following closely behind him, a guard stationed there exclaimed in surprise upon seeing Wang Chao: "The commander is back! Commander Wang has returned!"
The guard's shout echoed far and wide. Wang Chao hadn’t expected that this guard would recognize him; however, it wasn’t hard to imagine since three months ago he had led them through a bloody escape and stayed behind to cover their retreat. Who among those who survived didn’t know Wang Chao? After that incident, he had truly become the soul of this Safe Zone.
As he walked deeper into the Safe Zone, many people greeted him joyfully upon seeing his return. It felt as if he were a revered elder among them. Little Grudge followed closely behind Wang Chao but couldn’t understand why he commanded such respect in this Safe Zone—wasn’t this the same Wang Chao who once refused to help others?
Little Grudge remained silent, simply trailing behind him and observing everything quietly.
Suddenly, Wang Chao stopped in his tracks, his eyes softening with warmth as he spotted Yang Mengying and her group in the distance. They hadn’t expected that after searching desperately for three months, Wang Chao would suddenly appear before them. Tears streamed down Yang Mengying’s face at the sight of him. Witnessing this made Wang Chao’s heart ache; after all, during those cycles, he had repeatedly watched Yang Mengying and Yiyi die right before his eyes.
Seeing them alive and well in front of him, Wang Chao couldn't help but feel moved. Yang Mengying and Yiyi rushed forward, and Wang Chao picked up Yiyi with one arm while wrapping the other around Yang Mengying. Yang Mengying rested her head on Wang Chao's shoulder, sobbing softly. She asked, "Where have you been for the past four months? I missed you so much."
How could he not miss her? It had been a whole year since he last saw her.
The two embraced for several minutes before finally parting. When Wang Chao looked at the others, he was astonished to find that everyone's strength had increased. For instance, Big Strong Tang Feng had already broken through to Golden Level, and the Shen Sisters had all reached Silver Upper Tier. Even Xiao Wei, Yang Mengying, and Yiyi had all advanced to Silver Level. Wang Chao felt like crying; during these four months, he had been stuck in a vicious cycle.
While everyone else had leveled up, he had sat idle in the valley for four months without making any progress. In truth, Wang Chao didn't know that once someone broke through their killing intent, their leveling speed would skyrocket as if they were on a rocket. Hadn't an elder named Ma once said that internal factors are decisive while external factors can only act through internal ones?
Wang Chao recounted everything that had happened to him and Little Grudge in detail. The group listened with sympathy, especially Yiyi and Yang Mengying, who had witnessed the events firsthand. They shook their heads in disbelief; Little Grudge wasn't afraid since she couldn't kill anyone herself, but it wasn't easy for others to kill her either. There was no choice but to have Shen Zhitao arrange a room for Little Grudge to stay in.
Upon further inquiry, they learned that although Worm and the Zombie Horde had both suffered heavy losses—tens of thousands of zombies dead—many zombies still roamed near the Safe Zone. While some were tasked with repairing the city, others led troops out to fight. In just four months, they had nearly eradicated all the zombies outside, and everyone continued to break through their limits.
At the same time, many of the Guards who had gone into battle also made breakthroughs. Under Xiao Wei's arrangement, they formed a Silver Army of about a hundred men to secure the Safe Zone while the remaining men engaged in industrial production. The women took on agricultural work. With Academician Sun establishing a rudimentary industrial system over the past four months, everything in the Safe Zone seemed to be back on track.
Wang Chao sighed inwardly; this was truly excellent.
After not seeing each other for over four months, everyone was eager to celebrate. That evening, simple meals were served at the table, but there was no shortage of wine. Glasses clinked as they toasted and drank heartily; even Little Grudge sat at the table quietly watching everyone without saying a word. In Jing City alone, tens of thousands of zombies had perished at the Safe Zone, and the remaining zombies were no longer a significant threat.
In short, things were looking exceptionally good for the Safe Zone!
