Without further ado, Shen Zhiying was right; if no medicine was found, the number of deaths in such a summer would only increase. Xiao Wei had formulated a series of external expansion policies, and Wang Chao had noticed that in this environment, a Safe Zone could not possess all its resources. For instance, Wang Chao's Safe Zone was located near a mine, so generating electricity and heating were not issues.
On the other hand, the remaining Safe Zones near the sea naturally had an abundance of salt. Establishing connections with these Safe Zones and conducting trade was currently the most pressing matter for the Safe Zone. However, this was not something that could be accomplished overnight. Previously, Xiao Wei had dispatched several squads to the east, and they had been gone for over two months without returning. Given the current state of communication and transportation, it was normal for them to take two months; one could only hope they would bring back good news.
Ready for departure, Wang Chao led three squads totaling thirty people, including one squad from Silver Squad. With such a team, they should not encounter any danger of being completely wiped out unless a giant worm appeared. Surely, fate would not be that cruel. The nearest large hospital had already been searched by the group; any farther locations would require at least a day's round trip given the current transportation conditions.
The people Wang Chao led were capable but knew nothing about medical science, so they had no choice but to bring Wu Wan'er along. Wang Chao thought to himself that he needed to find an opportunity to go to the capital and bring Yang Mengying's parents over. Both were world-class experts in medicine; if materials could be obtained, mass production would not be impossible.
What was most important in the Twenty-Second Century? Truly, it was talent!
As the gates opened, the convoy headed westward. The surrounding roads had been cleared; however, as they traveled further west, more cars congested the streets, creating a desolate scene. In this desolation, it was uncertain how many survivors were struggling to get by. Unfortunately, the current Safe Zone lacked the capacity for large-scale searches for survivors, and with communication cut off, it was unknown how many people could receive their radio signals.
Upon reaching the main road, cars completely blocked the street. Clearing this mess would take more than just a moment; everyone had no choice but to abandon their vehicles and proceed on foot. "Wan'er," Wang Chao instructed, "stay close to me. The rest of you spread out according to formation. The first squad will scout ahead; signal with fireworks if anything happens."
Everyone nodded in agreement. Having experienced that great battle and undergone Liu Jie's training, these individuals had become qualified scouts! The guard quickly dispersed while still encountering numerous zombies around them. Wang Chao glanced back at Little Grudge who remained coldly observant of their surroundings without any signs of movement.
"Fire! Move in quickly!" Wang Chao commanded.
Gunfire erupted as zombies fell one by one under their bullets. They advanced until they finally reached the vicinity of the hospital as the sun began to set. However, with power down and darkness enveloping the entire building, it appeared eerie and terrifying from outside.
"The sun is about to set," Wang Chao said. "We should wait until tomorrow to enter; this hospital is too large to search thoroughly in one go."
"Alright then; one squad will keep watch while squads two and three set up camp here. Remember not to light any fires to avoid attracting more zombies," Wang Chao instructed.
The group moved quickly and quietly like a mute team. Wang Chao stood outside the hospital looking through a window into the darkness within. He felt puzzled that such a large hospital had no zombies at all—were they all hiding on the other side? That didn't seem right; there must be something unusual about this place. With that thought in mind, Wang Chao decided he needed to investigate further.
"Wang Chao said, 'You all wait here. I'll go in first to take a look; something seems off inside.'
Wu Wan'er replied, 'Isn't it too dangerous for you to go alone? Let's go in together tomorrow instead.'
Wang Chao shook his head and said, 'I think I should check it out first. Don't worry; with my current strength, I shouldn't be in much danger. I just have a feeling that something strange is going on inside. Logically speaking, there shouldn't be a Zombie in a hospital...' Before Wang Chao could finish, he heard Little Grudge speak up beside him: 'There are indeed no Zombies in this hospital; otherwise, I would be able to sense them.'
Wang Chao glanced at Little Grudge, unsure whether her words were true or false. After all, this sister was someone who constantly wished for his demise. However, with thirty armed Guards standing watch, even if Little Grudge wanted to control a Zombie, she wouldn't have the means to do so. Wang Chao nodded to reassure everyone and then walked through the hospital's main entrance.
Little Grudge followed closely behind him, and Wang Chao remained silent.
As he stepped into the hospital, a chilling atmosphere enveloped him. No wonder hospitals had always been significant places for ghostly encounters throughout history. Taking a closer look around, Wang Chao confirmed his suspicions: the benches were upright, and there were signs of something being dragged across the floor—clearly human-made. Moreover, although bloodstains were still visible, they had faded considerably.
This indicated that the blood had been shed here a long time ago.
'Follow me!' Wang Chao instructed Little Grudge. 'Do you see those marks? Look at the stairs; there's no dust. There might be Survivors here. Let me make it clear: your target is only me and not all humans, right?'
'That's correct,' Little Grudge nodded.
'Then I'm relieved!' With that, Wang Chao stepped up the staircase. This large hospital complex was divided into three sections: the outpatient building, the Inpatient Building, and the comprehensive internal and external medicine building. The building Wang Chao entered was the outpatient one, which was not very tall compared to the other two buildings; it only had six floors. By the time he reached the fourth floor, the traces had already disappeared.
This meant that these people had only been active on the first to third floors. Turning around a corner, he found this area completely different from others—clean and tidy, clearly having been cleaned by someone. Wang Chao pointed to one of the doors along the corridor and said, 'There must be someone here; let's go check it out!' Little Grudge nodded, but just as they reached the door, Wang Chao felt something tugging at his feet.
It was a thin fishing line."
