Wang Chao glanced gratefully at Zhu Feng, who nodded slightly. During their earlier sparring match, Zhu Feng understood that Wang Chao had been considerate of his reputation. If Zhu Feng, the Vice Captain, had been easily subdued by Wang Chao in one move, it would have affected how others viewed him. It was precisely because of this consideration that Wang Chao had shown restraint, and Zhu Feng was not a rigid person; at that moment, he also returned the favor to Wang Chao.
From that moment on, Wang Chao realized that even if he could not fully win over everyone yet, he no longer needed to worry about the old members of Captain Lei not cooperating with him. The saying went, "One must see the living and the dead," and Wang Chao had done everything he could. The rest would depend on time to build rapport between him and this unit. With a hundred people in tow, they received their equipment and firearms and went to bed early, waiting for the next morning to leave the city for Ganzhou.
The night passed without incident. When the group set out, it was still dark. Naturally, they could not gather together for reconnaissance; thus, they divided into ten groups of ten people each, taking different routes to Ganzhou. The mission would last three weeks, and they were to regroup at a predetermined location. If urgent intelligence arose, a few individuals could return to the capital ahead of time.
Wang Chao's orders were conveyed down the line, and everyone acted accordingly as they departed from the Safe Zone. Just getting from there to Ganzhou would take about a week at a silver-level pace. However, these individuals were professional scouts from the Assault Team, so they should be able to shorten that time by two days. Leading nine others, Wang Chao took the main road—the easiest route to encounter enemies and gather intelligence but also the most dangerous.
After all, if Huangfu Yan's army truly intended to come, they wouldn't march on foot. By then, their personnel would be exhausted before even engaging in battle, suffering significant losses beforehand—something Huangfu Yan would not do. Based on Wang Chao's speculation, they would likely transport troops by truck close to the capital before abandoning their vehicles and proceeding on foot for a surprise attack or other means of assault.
This meant that at least the main force would use highways; however, prior to that, they would certainly send scouts to check routes or even clear them. Wang Chao wondered whether Huangfu Yan's men would consider this as well and lay ambushes along his scouting path. Caution was necessary; after all, Huangfu Yan had many capable subordinates when it came to leading troops in battle.
Days passed without sight of Huangfu's men; there were no signs of cleared paths along the way. Various vehicles remained crashed together, blocking the highway completely—so much so that even zombies found it difficult to pass through; let alone trucks. Yet Wang Chao did not dare let his guard down; according to his calculations, the likelihood of encountering Huangfu Yan's advance team was increasing.
At nightfall, they refrained from lighting fires or using military flashlights. In the pitch-black silence of the highway, any light would stand out like fireflies in darkness and attract unwanted attention. The night provided them with excellent camouflage—especially since everyone wore black tactical gear. Even from a few meters away, one could hardly see another person; only distant zombie howls and rustling sounds from nearby bushes could be heard.
Silently munching on compressed biscuits, they suddenly heard increasingly loud noises coming from the grass nearby. Such a volume could not be produced by small animals—could it be zombies? The young man beside Wang Chao, Wang Xiaochuan, reached for his flashlight to get a better look but was stopped by Wang Chao's hand pressing down on his arm. "Pass it along," Wang Chao whispered urgently. "Don't turn on your flashlight; let's assess the situation first!"
The noise grew louder but did not resemble zombie activity; at night was when zombies were most frenzied and howled like wolves. Yet there had been no zombie cries for some time now—indicating that "there must be humans on the other side; we just don't know who they are." After a brief thought, Wang Chao leaned closer to Wang Xiaochuan's ear and continued speaking softly: "Pass it along; when we..."
"Captain Wang!" Wang Xiaochuan exclaimed. "You really are something!"
Wang Chao smiled slightly as he jumped out from behind the vehicle cover and called out: "Is anyone up ahead? I’m a survivor from Anxia; I just arrived here today and haven’t heard any zombie howls. If you’re human, please respond! Don’t leave us stranded here!" His tone trembled slightly with unease as if he were genuinely afraid.
At that moment, there was a brief silence from the other side before finally speaking up, "I am also from Anxia. We are the troops sent from Ganzhou. Fellow townsman, don't be afraid; I will ensure your safety."
Anxia was not far from here, and claiming to be from Anxia would certainly not raise any suspicions. After this exchange, it became clear that the other party was a scout sent by Huangfu Yan. It was quite a coincidence; just as they were discussing the possibility of encountering someone from Ganzhou, they did. Upon hearing this, Wang Chao wasted no time and shouted, "Go!"
In an instant, all the members of the Wolf Eye unit switched on their military flashlights, directing them toward the source of the voice. The Wolf Eye flashlights had excellent light-gathering capabilities and emitted a bright beam. The Ganzhou Advance Team had long since adapted to the dark environment, but now, faced with so many beams of light, their eyes were blinded in an instant; they could see nothing.
At that moment, Wang Chao and his squad charged forward with daggers in hand. Wang Chao took the lead but did not kill anyone; instead, he knocked one person unconscious. The others received Wang Chao's orders and executed their tasks without hesitation. Before they could even react, they were all swiftly dispatched by the squad, their throats cut before they realized who had attacked them.
"Close!" Given the professionalism of the squad, Wang Chao determined that aside from the one he had knocked out, there should be no other survivors. He decisively gave the command. From the moment the flashlights were turned on until they were switched off again took no more than ten seconds. By then, eight bodies lay on the ground. Wang Chao spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear: "Follow me; we need to retreat further away. That light just now was definitely man-made."
"There is likely more than one team from Ganzhou here. Move!"
The night was pitch black, and while everyone's speed was not fast, they managed to distance themselves from their previous location and headed deeper into the area. They walked for nearly two hours before Wang Chao finally ordered everyone to stop.
Once again hiding behind the wreckage of a vehicle, Wang Chao gently pinched the acupoint of the unconscious Ganzhou soldier until he slowly regained consciousness.
