"Let's go! Up the mountain!" Wang Chao said. "It's getting dark now. Once we climb to the top, we'll have a clear view of everything happening in Ganzhou City. At that point, identifying the geographical location of the Ganzhou Safe Zone will be easy. So, we need to hurry up the mountain, and then we must find a place to hide near the Safe Zone before dawn. Time is of the essence; move faster!"
Finally, the sky seemed to be covered by a dark curtain, plunging everything into pitch blackness. The moon was faint and the stars sparse tonight, making it even darker. Standing at the peak and looking out, the entire city was shrouded in darkness. It was now completely night; it couldn't possibly be that the power hadn't been restored yet. From a distance, numerous towering buildings appeared like giant monsters lurking in the shadows.
At a glance, Wang Chao understood why Huangfu Yan was called an old fox.
"Is it possible that Ganzhou hasn't restored its power supply?" Wang Xiaochuan asked from beside him.
Wang Chao shook his head and replied, "That’s impossible. Huangfu Yan commands tens of thousands of troops. If he can't manage something as basic as this, how can he hope to seize control of the world? There's only one possibility: Huangfu Yan has determined that with his Safe Zone's strength, he won't let even one of us escape. So this is a deliberate act to conceal the location of the Safe Zone!"
"Few people can consider such details," Wang Chao sighed. "In future battles, even if we win, it will be a narrow victory!"
"What should we do then?" Wang Xiaochuan asked.
"What else can we do? We need to conduct a thorough search," Wang Chao said. "But I don't know where the other squads are right now; they’re probably nearby the Safe Zone as well. Let's go! Down the mountain!" The descent was much quicker than the ascent. Following Wang Chao, everyone kept quiet as they navigated through the iron forest, searching for clues about the Safe Zone.
"Awooo!" A series of howls echoed around them, sounding as if they were exploding right next to their ears.
"There are zombies here!" Wang Chao instinctively shouted. "Prepare for battle!" Upon hearing this, everyone took up fighting stances, but after a long while, they could only hear the distant howls of zombies without seeing any approaching them. Confusion filled their minds. Wang Chao sheathed his Panlong Blade and said, "Be careful; let's move closer and take a look!"
As he spoke, Wang Chao led everyone forward until they were about four or five meters away. Only then did they see that the howling zombies were densely packed together but completely surrounded by iron mesh, unable to escape. They could only reach out through the wire and wave their hands desperately in an attempt to grab hold of them.
Seeing this, Wang Chao was taken aback and instructed everyone, "Let's go around!"
Walking along the barbed wire fence heading west, they had been on the move for two full hours without seeing an end to it. It seemed as if the entire city of Ganzhou was encircled by this fence. No matter where they went, the sounds of zombies howling could be heard. No wonder they hadn't encountered any zombies along the way; it appeared that Huangfu Yan had sent people to cordon off the area.
Such a massive undertaking would take at least two or three years to complete. However, Huangfu Yan had only been in Ganzhou for a little over a year, which indicated that he must have dispatched people here to take action before completely severing ties with the Zhang Family. Coupled with Huangfu Yan personally leading troops to Yucheng to rescue survivors, it was clear that part of his army had already been sent to Ganzhou from that moment on.
Wang Chao suddenly recalled what Old Zhang had done. Old Zhang spent three years and considerable effort sealing off hundreds of thousands of zombies in Yanshan Valley. If Zhang Fusheng were to be defeated in the future, he would hold the capital and blow open a breach to lure out the zombies to destroy Huangfu Yan's forces. In comparison, Wang Chao felt like a transparent elementary school student; the schemes of Old Zhang and Huangfu Yan were unfathomably deep.
The purpose of the encircled zombies was likely similar. If they were defeated, all they needed to do was destroy the barbed wire and release these zombies. At that point, even if their forces were to attack the Ganzhou Safe Zone, they would first have to clear out these hundreds of thousands of zombies. And if they truly chose to eliminate the zombies, then those within the Safe Zone could simply watch from the sidelines and wait for both sides to suffer losses before intervening. This applied equally to both Ganzhou and the capital.
Wang Chao had never considered this point before. Although he was one of the top figures in this generation, he still fell far short compared to his predecessors.
"Just looking at the scale, I guess there are at least two hundred thousand zombies!" Wang Xiaochuan said as he peered through the barbed wire at the zombies inside. "I wonder how deep their foundation is; those zombies won't break free from the wire and charge out, will they?" Wang Chao shot him a glance and replied, "If Huangfu Yan could make such a mistake, he would have died decades ago."
"However," Wang Chao frowned and said, "since this place is already surrounded by barbed wire, it means we must be close to the Safe Zone. If we continue circling this fence, there must be a passageway—at least wide enough for two trucks to pass through. There should be at least two such passages. Our mission now is to find that passageway and lie in wait nearby to observe the situation!"
Continuing around the barbed wire for another hour, they noticed that ahead, the fence noticeably dipped inward—clearly indicating where a passage lay. Seeing this, Wang Xiaochuan immediately moved forward but was pulled back by Wang Chao. He said, "Don't act rashly; there are only a few passageways, and there must be someone guarding them. Listen—there's no sound around us; that means there are hidden sentries."
Perhaps soldiers from Ganzhou were hiding in nearby buildings. "From now on, we'll split into two teams," Wang Chao instructed. "Wang Xiaochuan, you lead one team and hide in that tall building over there while I take the rest around back to look for other passageways. Remember, your mission is to gather intelligence—not engage in combat here—so don't expose yourselves."
As he spoke, Wang Chao patted Wang Xiaochuan on the shoulder and added, "Especially you; curiosity killed the cat—don't be impulsive. Right now, you are your squad's Squad Leader. I'll come back here in three days. Your task is to keep an eye on who comes back during this time and who leaves—how many people go and in which direction. Understood, little Captain Wang?"
Wang Xiaochuan's face turned red as he quietly replied, "Don't worry, big Captain Wang; I guarantee I'll complete the mission! Let's head into that building!"
Wang Chao nodded and said, "Alright then, let's get moving!"
