After walking for about half an hour, another passage appeared before the five of them. Wang Chao repeated his previous strategy, instructing the four to lie low and wait for him to return in three days. The others were puzzled by Wang Chao's intentions, but they could only watch as his eyes transformed into a silver hue, and the Panlong Blade vanished from sight, leaving them in shock. Wang Chao said, "You all stay here. I'll sneak into the Safe Zone alone to take a look!"
"Huangfu Yan knows you, Captain. Isn't this too dangerous?" one of the team members remarked.
Wang Chao shook his head and replied, "I have my own methods. The more people there are, the more dangerous it becomes. The most perilous places are often the safest. It's safer for me to go alone." Hearing this, the others fell silent and concealed themselves in the night. At that moment, Wang Chao retrieved a set of ordinary clothes from his Spatial Ring, changing out of his combat gear and storing his weapons, including the Panlong Blade, back into the Spatial Ring.
Using his gene-altering abilities, he made some minor adjustments to his appearance; this was all he could manage at the moment.
Now, Wang Chao looked significantly different—more ordinary than before. Dressed in plain clothes, he blended seamlessly into a crowd; no one would notice him. However, he knew that the Ganzhou Safe Zone was likely on high alert, making it difficult to infiltrate. After a moment of contemplation, he realized that passing through the horde of zombies was actually the most straightforward and quickest route.
At least he wouldn't have to avoid patrols along the way.
With that thought in mind, Wang Chao moved away from the passage and approached a barbed wire fence. He kicked it hard and used the momentum to flip over into the enclosure. Without pausing, he sprinted forward at full speed; even the zombies on the fence had no time to react before he was already far ahead.
Wang Chao glanced around and saw that this vast area was teeming with zombies—thickly packed together. Most were clustered near the barbed wire fence; although there were plenty of zombies in between, they still allowed for some movement. Otherwise, he would have been completely blocked. It was clear that there were definitely over two hundred thousand zombies in this area.
Throughout his journey, Wang Chao dared not slow down; if surrounded by so many zombies, it would be a dire situation for him. With two Bone Knives drawn, he sliced through every zombie that blocked his path. He understood now what it meant when people said strength lies in numbers—forget about zombies; even two hundred thousand ants could devour a person alive.
At such a rapid pace, it took him over ten minutes to reach the wall of the Ganzhou Safe Zone. Here stood tall walls as well. Without slowing down, Wang Chao leaped up onto the wall. He didn’t glance sideways; although there were outposts on either side, he was dressed in black and moved swiftly and silently, allowing him to ascend without being noticed.
A few seconds later, Wang Chao found himself inside the Ganzhou Safe Zone.
However, as soon as he landed, he stumbled upon a patrol team. Caught off guard, Wang Chao felt helpless; with his Panlong Blade in hand and while they were still astonished by his sudden appearance, he swiftly struck down several heads before they could react. There was no choice—he didn’t know if another patrol team would arrive soon and had nowhere to hide these bodies.
The situation was urgent. With these thoughts in mind, Wang Chao decided not to dwell on them any longer. Originally, he could only stay in the Ganzhou Safe Zone for two days; on the third day, he would have to return and regroup with everyone. In this short span of two days, with over two hundred thousand people in the Ganzhou Safe Zone, finding Wang Chao would be like searching for a needle in a haystack. He ran deeper into the area and randomly chose a room in a tall building.
He lay down and fell asleep immediately.
Early the next morning, the sounds of commotion outside reached him. Wang Chao carefully checked himself; there were no bloodstains or anything that might raise suspicion. He stepped out of the building and casually grabbed a young man, only to discover it was Zhao Dong! What a coincidence! Zhao Dong was none other than his neighbor from the Safe Zone back in their small town!
Wang Chao remembered that over three years ago, when the Zombie crisis had just erupted, he had become separated from Yang Mengying and Yiyi while searching for them in the small town's Safe Zone. Along the way, he had encountered his college crush, Chen Feifei, and Shen Zhitao. It all felt like it had happened just yesterday. Back then, he had even offended Mayor Li's son, Li Xiuli, for Zhao Dong and his girlfriend, Li Yunqi.
When he was in Yucheng, Zhang Fusheng had rescued him and brought him back to the capital. Meanwhile, a large group of people from the small town had been led to Ganzhou by Huangfu Yan. Suddenly, Wang Chao thought of Chen Feifei; he wondered how she was doing now.
Zhao Dong turned around when someone tugged at his clothes and found a stranger staring at him blankly. It wasn't Zhao Dong's fault for not recognizing Wang Chao; after all, they hadn't seen each other in three years, and Wang Chao had changed his appearance significantly. If Zhao Dong could still recognize him now, it would mean that Wang Chao's disguise had completely failed.
Seeing Zhao Dong's puzzled expression made Wang Chao feel a surge of emotions. However, he knew that given his current identity, it was not appropriate to speak freely; otherwise, it could endanger Zhao Dong. Bringing his thoughts back to the present, he asked, "Hey brother, why is it so noisy today? What's going on?"
Zhao Dong smiled and replied, "You must be new here. Ever since the highest state of military readiness was activated, it's been this noisy every day."
Wang Chao couldn't help but chuckle inwardly; Zhao Dong was still as straightforward as ever—never suspecting others' intentions and always saying what was on his mind. He remembered when they were neighbors; even when Zhao Dong's family could barely afford to eat, they still used their last bit of rice to host him and Chen Feifei. He wondered if that trait was a virtue or a flaw.
"Yeah, I’ve been taking care of my mother until recently. She passed away a few days ago, so I wanted to come here and enlist!" Wang Chao casually provided an explanation. For anyone else, such a reason would be easily seen through as falsehood; however, upon hearing this from Wang Chao, Zhao Dong offered sincere condolences before saying, "But it's not as easy to enlist right now; the military is making big moves these days and isn't recruiting anyone!"
"What kind of big moves?" Wang Chao asked curiously.
