During this meal, Wang Chao's eyes were constantly observing the situation in the military camp, but he couldn't see much. The tall buildings surrounding the camp were all off-limits to residents, and this was already the closest he could get to the military zone. Even so, Wang Chao still couldn't discern the specific conditions inside the camp. It seemed that Huangfu Yan had taken measures to prevent any leaks of military information. This only strengthened Wang Chao's resolve to find a way into the camp.
However, Wang Chao noticed out of the corner of his eye that Li Yunqi seemed to be watching him closely, which made him feel somewhat uneasy. After finishing his meal, Zhao Dong and Li Yunqi had work to attend to, so Wang Chao decided not to disturb them. Instead, he wandered around the vicinity of the military zone, trying to find a safe route into the camp. After circling around, he discovered that the camp was surrounded by high walls with only one main gate, resembling a small Safe Zone.
Could he scale the wall again? Wang Chao observed that the defenses of this military camp were much tighter than those outside; it was truly a case of guards every few steps and sentries every five. With such density, it would be impossible for Wang Chao to replicate his previous method. Just as he was wandering outside the military zone, he suddenly stopped, as an idea struck him. He was standing right above a manhole cover.
The military camp had erected high walls between several roads and buildings, which meant there must be manholes on the streets. If he could enter through a manhole, it might allow him to infiltrate the camp from below since entering from above was not an option. Wang Chao thought that perhaps Huangfu Yan hadn’t considered this when constructing the camp. Finding a secluded spot with no one around, Wang Chao lifted the cover and jumped in.
It took him a full twenty minutes to figure out the route to the military camp. Naturally, he couldn't act during daylight hours, so he had lunch at Zhao Dong's house and continued to roam around the city until about three o'clock when he gathered some intelligence: first, Ganzhou Safe Zone was easy to defend but hard to attack; if they wanted to eliminate Huangfu Yan completely, they would need a surprise attack—having more people would be of no use. Second, security here was tight with many personnel present, making it difficult to communicate with his own people. The third point was that within a week, Huangfu Yan's army would definitely move.
From outside alone, one could hear the sounds of troop mobilization inside; all signs indicated that a major battle was imminent.
It wasn't until nightfall that Wang Chao entered the manhole again. Following his planned route, he estimated that he would emerge at what should be behind the military camp. Listening for sounds beneath the manhole cover, Wang Chao calculated that a patrol team would pass by in about five minutes. He climbed out from under the cover and scanned his surroundings; the patrol team had already passed by while another one had yet to arrive.
The area was pitch dark, and Wang Chao had no idea which building housed the Staff Office containing important secrets.
Not wanting to linger too long in one place, he moved stealthily through the darkness. The further he went inside, the more frequent and intense the patrols became; he could see at least five visible sentries and had no idea how many hidden ones there were. Looking up, he saw an office building that appeared completely dark from outside; it was unclear what conditions lay within. However, it must be significant; otherwise, why would so many guards be stationed around such a decrepit building?
But how could Wang Chao enter without wings amidst such tight security? Suddenly, he recalled what Gao Rui had mentioned before: if he could control genetic mutations, theoretically speaking, he could create wings for himself. In the darkness of night, Wang Chao attempted several times but failed each time; fortunately, he could revert back each time as well; otherwise, given his recent transformations, he'd surely be mistaken for a mutated Zombie.
But how could he gain entry? After pondering for a while without any solution, just then he heard a car approaching from afar—without headlights and moving slowly—it came right up to the outpost. It seemed like fortune favored him! The car stopped and a soldier from the Outpost stepped forward and asked, “Password!”
“Tiger,” replied the passenger.
"Let them through!" the soldier said with a salute.
The obstruction was moved aside, and the car roared back to life. The passenger turned to the person in the back and said, "I tell you, Huangfu Ling, now that you're in this Safe Zone, you're practically a person of great importance. This is all thanks to that guy—what's his name? Right, Wang Chao. If he hadn't killed Huangfu Yan's last son, we wouldn't be in this position at all!"
The person sitting in the back was none other than Huangfu Ling, the head of the Bioterrorism Security Department and Wang Chao's former superior. However, ever since Huangfu Ling abandoned the citizens and fled during the incident in Yucheng, his position had become more of a title than anything else. It was unexpected that Huangfu Ling had returned to Ganzhou with Huangfu Yan.
The driver chuckled, "Haha, Huangfu Cheng, following Brother Ling means happiness is just around the corner. The only known survivors of the Huangfu Family are us three now. Huangfu Yan is already over seventy; he won't last much longer. Right now, we each command three elite troops. Once Huangfu Yan takes the capital, we can take action!"
"Exactly! When that time comes, we can support Brother Ling as emperor, and no one will oppose it!" Huangfu Cheng added.
Huangfu Ling's expression changed suddenly as he interjected, "Huangfu Nan, Huangfu Cheng, there are ears everywhere; we shouldn't discuss such matters here. Our most important task now is to follow Huangfu Yan and capture the capital. We'll deal with future matters later! Today, Huangfu Yan summoned us to discuss military strategy late at night, which means that within three days, the main force will be on the move!"
"Do you understand?" Huangfu Ling asked.
"Understood!" both Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng replied in unison.
Despite their words, Huangfu Ling felt a surge of excitement within him. He believed he was destined to be the master of this world. From Yucheng to Wang Chao killing Huangfu Yan's last son, and now with Zhang Lao's passing—all these events were paving the way for him. His name would eventually resonate throughout China; figures like Wang Chao and Zhang Fusheng were merely stepping stones on his path to greatness!
Meanwhile, hanging beneath the car was Wang Chao, unaware of what Huangfu Ling was thinking. However, he had clearly overheard their conversation. It seemed that only three or four members of the Huangfu Family remained. Yet here they were—the legacy of a lifetime led by Huangfu Yan was being handed over to these three individuals. As an enemy, Wang Chao couldn't help but feel pity for Huangfu Yan.
But could something be done about this situation? The thought flashed through Wang Chao's mind.
At that moment, the car came to a stop.
