One night passed without incident, and everyone had a good rest.
The next morning, Wang Chao led his elite force of over a thousand people out of the Safe Zone. A thousand-strong army naturally required logistical support, but Wang Chao rejected this notion. He wanted his troops to be a rapid force, unbound by the constraints of logistics and supplies. He planned to store food in one location and have them transport it as needed.
Although Zhu Feng and the others noticed this, they said nothing upon seeing Wang Chao's demeanor. They knew that he had never held a military position before, but they also recognized that he was not an ordinary person. Such a simple matter was not something Wang Chao could overlook. The main force set out with their sights set on Wuping Mountain.
Wang Chao had known Huangfu Ling for three years. Back in the small town, Huangfu Ling was the first to recognize Wang Chao's potential and recruited him into the Bioterrorism Security Department. If one counted, Wang Chao, the Shen Sisters, Da Qiang, Xiao Wei, and others were all under Huangfu Ling's command. Wang Chao remembered how Huangfu Yan had single-handedly faced several Mourning Lions without faltering. Who would have thought that just three short years later, he and Huangfu Ling would become adversaries?
Huangfu Ling, Huangfu Nan, and Huangfu Cheng presented three choices, yet Wang Chao did not hesitate at all; he chose to head towards Wuping Mountain. Aside from Huangfu Ling being the most capable strategist among the three, it was more significant that Huangfu Ling had once been his leader. Since the zombie siege in Yucheng, Wang Chao had not seen Huangfu Ling again and had no idea what level of strength he had reached now.
The journey is not worth elaborating on; every day during meal preparation, Wang Chao instructed them to transport food from designated locations where he had hidden supplies, claiming it was already stored away. It was understandable that there were not many zombies in the vicinity; two years ago, when Huangfu Yan went to Ganzhou, he had cleared out a significant number of zombies along the way. Moreover, during the initial outbreak of zombies, both the capital and Ganzhou had begun to contain them, with about a million zombies trapped between the two locations.
However, Wang Chao knew that this could only be achieved near military districts like the capital or Ganzhou where weapons and troops were abundant. In many other parts of Huaxia, people were still suffering under dire circumstances; places like the small town or Yucheng had become ghost towns filled with zombies—Wang Chao had seen this firsthand from a helicopter.
Despite Huaxia being filled with such small towns where people died every moment due to the zombie crisis, for power's sake, the Huangfu Family and Zhang Family fought relentlessly against each other—a tragic reality. Wang Chao once expressed his hope to rise from his beginnings to surpass the Zhang Family and make the Wang family the foremost family in the world. But was this ambition noble or tragic?
The thousand-strong army rushed towards Wuping Mountain at full speed; it took them over a week to arrive. The battle at Wuping Mountain must have already begun; it was unclear who held the upper hand. That afternoon, as they finally reached near Wuping Mountain, faint gunfire could be heard from above. Wang Chao signaled Zhu Feng to scout ahead. Zhu Feng nodded and led several members of the Thunder Strike Team up the mountain.
It took an hour before Zhu Feng returned with not only members of the Thunder Strike Team but also an officer who promptly saluted upon seeing Wang Chao. Wang Chao merely nodded and asked, "What is the current situation?"
The officer wore an expression of shame before replying, "We saw your map and knew we needed to hurry to Wuping Mountain for a well-executed ambush. However, Huangfu Ling's forces set out much earlier than us. By the time we arrived here, we encountered Huangfu Ling's army on the mountain! What was supposed to be an ambush turned into a meeting engagement!"
"That happened eight days ago!" The officer continued: "At that time, we launched our attack; both sides suffered losses with many casualties! Until three days ago when Huangfu Ling feigned retreat while secretly leading our Commander into a trap—over five hundred brothers died inside, including Captain Xue!"
Wang Chao was taken aback by the news. Truly, the members of the Huangfu Family were skilled in warfare. He asked, "What is the current situation? How many brothers do we have left?"
The man replied, "We are at our wits' end. Out of the three thousand brothers who came, over a thousand have died in just a week, and about a hundred are seriously injured. The rest still have fighting spirit, but most are wounded. If you don't come, we can only hold on for another two or three days!"
"What about Huangfu Ling?" Wang Chao inquired. "What is their casualty situation?"
"They've lost about five hundred men, but the rest are mostly uninjured," the man explained. "At first, both sides were caught off guard, which led to higher casualties. Later on, the Huangfu Army suffered almost no losses. It's all our fault; if we could have stopped Captain Xue, none of this would have happened. We were too greedy and reckless..." As he spoke, tears streamed down his face, choking him up.
Wang Chao patted his shoulder and said, "This is not your fault! It seems that in a few days, Huangfu Ling will crush us with his army, following the route they had planned like a sharp sword piercing through the capital! Even knowing Huangfu Ling's movements in advance, we still couldn't defeat him. It appears that these young factions in the capital are far weaker than the Huangfu Family."
"Who is in command of this troop now?" Wang Chao asked.
The man replied, "I hold the highest rank here, but now that you have arrived, command naturally falls to you!"
Wang Chao shook his head and leaned closer to whisper something in the man's ear. The man nodded and said, "I guarantee to complete the mission!" With that, the officer dashed up the mountain. Seeing this, Wang Chao turned to the others and said, "Zhu Feng, take three hundred men and set an ambush at the Five Passes ahead. When you see the signal flare go up, open fire!"
"Understood!" Zhu Feng responded.
"Feng Wanchun! You lead three hundred men to ambush on the right side of Wuping Mountain. Wait for my command. Zhao Wenrui, you take position on the right side as well. Remember, do not act rashly until the signal flare is fired! Now move out!" Wang Chao commanded.
The remaining two hundred men were personally led by Wang Chao as they sprinted into the distance.
