Light rain began to fall from the sky, and before one knew it, autumn had arrived. "This is exactly the result I want. Who else in this world can match me in leading troops into battle?" Huangfu Ling said. "You take command and defeat these remaining bandits for me. Then we will pursue our victory all the way to the capital!"
"Understood!" the aide responded eagerly. "I'll go right away!"
At that moment.
Wang Chao raised his hand to check his watch and said, "Everyone get ready! It's just getting light out now; after a night of fierce fighting, this is when people are most fatigued. I suspect Huangfu Ling's attack is about to come! Are the signal flares ready? You insisted on coming along instead of resting in the capital; how are your injuries?" Wang Chao's guess was indeed correct; at that moment, the Huangfu Family had launched their final assault led by Huangfu Ling's trusted aide. They charged up from another side of Wuping Mountain. Due to Director Di's mistakes, the Imperial Army had suffered significant losses and could hardly find time to rest. Even today, they remained exhausted and dizzy; without needing an enemy attack, they could collapse at any moment.
"Brothers, we can't hold on any longer, let's run!" The one who spoke was the highest-ranking officer in the Imperial Army, the same person who had briefed Wang Chao about the situation last night. From time to time, someone fell by the roadside. Wang Xiaochuan could hardly contain his frustration and whispered to Wang Chao, "Aren't we going to act? They're about to pass us!"
Wang Chao shook his head and replied, "Not yet; the best part is still to come. To avoid getting caught in a tough battle ourselves, our best move is to take out Huangfu Ling's command center directly! Don't worry; if my guess is correct, Huangfu Ling is already on his way down the mountain. Soon we will see them. Everyone must remain calm; if we're discovered now, all our efforts will be in vain!"
"Especially you, Wang Xiaochuan!" Wang Chao said sternly but quietly. "Do you understand?"
"I understand!"
An hour later, just as Wang Chao had predicted, the Huangfu Army marched down the mountain in neat formation. Wang Chao patted Wang Xiaochuan on the shoulder and said, "When I fire the first shot, you launch the signal flare!"
Wang Xiaochuan nodded.
However, as the tail end of the main force approached, Wang Chao still showed no intention of firing. The others grew anxious; sweat dripped from Wang Xiaochuan's forehead as he wondered how Wang Chao could remain so patient. Finally, when the tail end of the main force came into view, Wang Chao fired a historic shot!
Immediately after, a signal flare shot into the air with yellow smoke trailing behind it. At that moment, gunfire erupted like a shattered silver bottle spilling water; cavalry charged forth with swords drawn. Feng Wanchun and Zhao Wenrui, lying in ambush at the foot of the mountain, rushed out at once. The Huangfu Army fell into chaos as they were struck by a sudden illusion that enemies surrounded them from all sides.
Wang Chao patted Wang Xiaochuan's shoulder again and said, "I'll leave this to you. They won't even have time to react. Remember: if you can avoid killing them, do so. I have something else to take care of!" At that moment, caught up in fierce combat, Wang Xiaochuan heard Wang Chao's words and nodded without further thought.
The situation here was basically under control. Wang Chao hurried to the location where Zhu Feng had been, and upon arrival, he found that a fierce battle was already underway. The sudden ambush had caught the Huangfu Army off guard. Wang Chao located Zhu Feng, who had not yet joined the fight, and asked, "Have you taken care of the matters I entrusted to you?"
