After bidding farewell to Zhu Feng, Wang Chao rushed down a pre-arranged path. The main reason Wang Chao had set up Zhu Feng to ambush here was that by the time they arrived, the Huangfu Army's chances had already collapsed. Wang Chao had intentionally let Huangfu Ling escape because he wanted to confront him personally. After all, the relationship between Wang Chao and Huangfu Ling was quite complicated; Huangfu Ling was both Wang Chao's superior and his friend.
However, from the moment Huangfu Ling abandoned the crowd to flee alone, he was no longer seen as a friend or leader in Wang Chao's eyes. Yet, if one were to say that Huangfu Ling was wrong for doing so, Wang Chao found himself at a loss for words. He was merely a selfish person trying to survive.
"Damn it!" At this moment, Huangfu Ling was far from his previous calm demeanor; he appeared anxious and furious. He cursed, "Where did those people come from? Didn't we investigate everything beforehand? How could so many suddenly appear? I see at least a thousand of them! Are our scouts completely useless? Not a single one spotted a thousand men?"
"Those over a thousand people arrived at the earliest last night. We didn't scout when we were supposed to launch the full assault last night, who knew..." said a soldier beside Huangfu Ling.
"Retreat!" Huangfu Ling commanded. "I never expected to be cornered here. As long as there's still life left, there’s no need to worry about firewood. The humiliation you've left me with, I will definitely reclaim!"
"Is that so?" A voice interrupted. "Do you really think you can escape?" The speaker was none other than Wang Chao, who had hurriedly caught up. Looking around, Wang Chao noticed that only four personal guards remained by Huangfu Ling's side. Upon seeing Wang Chao, Huangfu Ling stopped running and turned his head slightly in thought before saying, "This is a path you deliberately left open."
"Exactly!" Wang Chao nodded.
Huangfu Ling seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and then said, "In that case, if you let me go today, when I become the rightful ruler of the world in the future, wealth and glory will be yours for the taking! For now, I shall take my leave."
"Why do you think I would let you go?" Wang Chao replied expressionlessly.
Upon hearing Wang Chao's words, Huangfu Ling's expression changed dramatically as he darkly stated, "It was I who selected you for the Bioterrorism Security Department. Without me, how would you have met anyone from the Seven Great Families? If you hadn't met Shen Zhitao or Zhang Fusheng, how could you have survived until now? Not to mention that you offended Mayor Li; if it weren't for me, you'd have been executed back then!"
After listening to these words, Wang Chao merely smiled disdainfully and said, "My life has never been given by anyone! Do you really think I'm foolish enough not to realize you're the one pulling the strings behind the scenes? You simply don't want to be labeled as a despicable villain. Coming here alone is already showing you some respect, but your respect is worth very little; today is your day of reckoning."
Huangfu Ling burst into laughter and replied, "Back then, I should have just killed you on the spot!"
"Unfortunately, you didn't!" Wang Chao shrugged.
"I could have killed you back then, and I can still kill you now! I shouldn't have let you live for three more years!" After saying this, Huangfu Ling charged forward. He was only at the lower level of Platinum, while Wang Chao had already reached the Platinum Tier. However, since Wang Chao left the capital two years ago, they hadn't seen each other, so Huangfu Ling was unaware of Wang Chao's true strength.
Huangfu Ling rushed in like an arrow released from a bow, but Wang Chao did not dodge at all. With a cold laugh, Huangfu Ling threw a punch, yet Wang Chao merely stepped back slightly and reached out with his right hand to grab Huangfu Ling's fist. The punch that Huangfu Ling had launched with momentum was effortlessly caught by Wang Chao.
"Your strength is definitely above Platinum Level!" Huangfu Ling exclaimed in shock.
Before his words could settle, Wang Chao kicked out directly at Huangfu Ling's knee. There was a sickening crack as one of Huangfu Ling's knees shattered under the force. He collapsed to the ground, and seeing this, Wang Chao delivered another kick that crushed Huangfu Ling's other knee as well. At this point, Wang Chao finally released his grip, and Huangfu Ling knelt before him.
Huangfu Ling's legs were completely ruined, with bone fragments protruding from the flesh, creating a gruesome sight. Wang Chao shook his head; after all, Huangfu Ling had once been his superior and had treated the Shen Sisters well. Wang Chao did not wish to take his life but only crippled him so that he could no longer oppose the capital or Zhang Fusheng.
"I can kill you, but I won't!" Wang Chao turned his back to Huangfu Ling and said, "Aren't you going to help him up?"
The four guards finally realized they couldn't intervene in a battle at the Platinum Level. They hurriedly helped Huangfu Ling up and turned to leave. But just then, as he was being assisted, Huangfu Ling suddenly unleashed all his remaining strength and lunged at Wang Chao. Feeling the rush of wind behind him, Wang Chao instantly understood what was happening.
In that split second of turning around, his shield materialized just in time. Huangfu Ling's punch struck the shield with tremendous force, sending Wang Chao flying backward. Simultaneously, Wang Chao thrust his Panlong Blade forward, piercing through Huangfu Ling's chest. As he retreated, he found himself propelled back ten meters.
Once stabilized, Wang Chao approached again and pulled out the Panlong Blade still embedded in Huangfu Ling's chest. "Why go to such lengths?" he asked.
At that moment, Huangfu Ling was not yet dead; he struggled to speak but coughed up blood instead. "I... cough cough... I'm Huangfu Ling. If I become disabled... it would be better to die... I know you did this to leave me with a complete corpse. Thank you... there's something I need you to tell Shen..."
At this point, Huangfu Ling closed his eyes and breathed his last.
Wang Chao sighed. The reason he had stabbed instead of delivering a direct blow to Huangfu Ling's head was indeed to leave him with a complete corpse. However, Huangfu Ling's words remained unspoken, and with that thrust, Wang Chao pierced his heart. It was evident that Huangfu Ling had been holding on just to say so much.
What exactly did Huangfu Ling want to tell him—was it meant for Shen Zhiying or Shen Zhitao? And what was it that Huangfu Ling wanted to convey to her? These questions would forever remain unanswered, lost to the gentle autumn breeze.
"Give him a proper burial," Wang Chao said before turning to leave.
