Thinking of this, Wang Chao felt a chill run down his spine. If Huangfu Yan would sacrifice his own family members, Wang Chao would absolutely believe it. Huangfu Yan had always been someone who would stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Among the three groups, Huangfu Ling led four thousand troops, while Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng each commanded three thousand. Huangfu Yan surely knew the nature of both Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng.
Perhaps the only one he could trust was Huangfu Ling!
The others were merely cannon fodder! No wonder they had been unable to locate Huangfu Yan's forces; it was likely that his troops were mixed in with those of Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng. On the surface, it appeared that Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng were leading, but secretly, Huangfu Yan's army was nearby. This way, even if someone discovered this troop, they would only think it belonged to Huangfu Nan or Huangfu Cheng!
This explained why the numerous scouts sent from the capital had never spotted Huangfu Yan's forces!
Wang Chao recalled the marching routes on that map. Excluding the route taken by Huangfu Ling, the paths of Huangfu Nan and Huangfu Cheng seemed to be heading straight for the Safe Zone. However, with Zhang Fusheng stationed there, what actions would Huangfu Yan take? If he were in Huangfu Yan's position, how could he breach the towering concrete walls of the capital? Surely, attempting to break through solely with manpower would result in countless casualties.
"Brother Wang, where are we headed now?" Wang Xiaochuan asked beside him.
"Um." Wang Chao sighed. All of this was just speculation on his part. To confirm it, he needed to check the third location. If Huangfu Cheng could defeat the Imperial Army, then his assumptions would undoubtedly be correct! Only someone like Huangfu Yan could use thousands of lives to deceive the Imperial Army.
Wang Chao couldn't afford to hesitate any longer. He initially thought about leaving a hundred men to escort these people back to the capital but suddenly realized that Huangfu Yan might already be near the capital. Going back now would be tantamount to sending them to their deaths. Moreover, considering Mao Li's group, they might very well encounter Huangfu Yan's army on their way back. With this in mind, Wang Chao quickly turned to Wang Xiaochuan and said, "Wang Xiaochuan, I have an important mission for you!"
"Don't worry, Captain! I will complete whatever mission you assign me!" Wang Xiaochuan replied.
Wang Chao nodded and said, "Immediately find Mao Li and his team. Move as fast as you can; we must not let them return to the capital. Once you locate them, head back to Wuping Mountain for garrison! You must do this as quickly as possible. Do you understand?"
"Understood!" After saluting, Wang Xiaochuan dashed out without delay.
"Feng Wanchun, take a hundred soldiers and escort these people to Wuping Mountain. The supplies we seized from Mao Li are enough for you all to last a few weeks. If anything happens, send someone to find me! Do you understand?" Wang Chao instructed Feng Wanchun.
Feng Wanchun nodded and replied, "I guarantee the mission will be completed!"
Wang Chao continued, "That's best. If I'm not mistaken, Huangfu Yan has likely arrived near the capital without anyone noticing! Damn that old fox! The rest of you, follow me to the third location near the Plateau. We need to move quickly!" The group acknowledged their orders. For the past few weeks, Wang Chao's army had hardly rested.
They slept only four hours a day, spending the rest of their time eating or on the move. Remarkably, they reached the third Plateau in just one week, a journey that would typically take two weeks. Upon arrival, they began searching the area and discovered it was littered with corpses. In comparison, the bodies of the Imperial Army made up a significant portion of the dead. Seeing this, Wang Chao let out a heavy sigh; he knew his suspicions were correct.
"Look for any survivors nearby," Wang Chao instructed his men.
After several hours of searching, they finally found a few survivors hidden in a building. However, there were only these few left, and the scene was far more tragic than at the second location. Upon seeing Wang Chao, tears streamed down their faces as he hurriedly asked, "What happened here?"
The survivor appeared shaken. Wang Chao pressed further, "What exactly happened? Are there any other survivors?"
"We don't know," the survivor stammered, trembling slightly. Wang Chao was taken aback; what kind of ordeal could have left him in such a state? The Imperial Army couldn't possibly be this frightened. The survivor continued, "When we first arrived here, we found no enemies nearby and decided to set up an ambush overnight. But who would have thought that something monstrous seemed to come out at night!"
"Monstrous?" Wang Chao asked.
"Yes!" the survivor confirmed. "It was indeed a monster. Before we could properly hide ourselves, we heard screams echoing throughout the night. We were inside a building and couldn't see anything in the darkness, but those screams lasted all night long. By morning, we saw that three thousand people—yes, three thousand—had all turned into corpses!"
"That must be a monster; how else could three thousand people be killed in one night?" he added.
Wang Chao listened intently and then returned to examine the various bodies beneath the building. Most of them had died from a single blow, but their deaths varied greatly: some had their throats slit, others had gaping wounds in their abdomens, and some bore no visible marks at all. As he looked at more and more corpses, Wang Chao began to piece together what had killed these people.
Elite Eighteen had seen Nine People fall at the hands of Wang Chao, but there were still Nine People left.
Although there were many corpses here, the methods used were limited to just a few dozen, indicating that these individuals had been killed by a handful of people. The only ones capable of such a feat were the nine elite members of Huangfu Yan. According to Wang Chao's deductions, at least two among the Nine People had reached Platinum Level, and perhaps even one who had been in the room at the time, someone who could overpower even Wang Chao himself!
With the skills of those few individuals, killing over three thousand people in the dead of night was entirely feasible. This suggested that the third location, Plateau, was indeed where Huangfu Yan had personally led his team. This meant that Huangfu Yan was now close to the imperial capital. What should he do? What could he do? Anxiety gripped Wang Chao as he realized how easily a simple scheme had allowed Huangfu Yan's forces to approach the capital undetected.
If he had known about Huangfu Yan's movements in advance, how could Zhang Fusheng, leading his army, have allowed Huangfu Yan to reach the vicinity of the capital with so few casualties?
Suddenly, it seemed that Wang Chao remembered something important. He turned to Zhu Feng and said, "The matter I mentioned to you a long time ago—let's start working on it now. Bring along those people from Wuping! Do you remember that name? He can help you!"
"Understood!" replied Zhu Feng.
"Then I'll head to the capital first!" Wang Chao said hurriedly.
