Watching the people disembarking from the plane, Wang Chao couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement. He had known these individuals for over three years, and during that time, they had faced life and death together, creating a shelter for many in this apocalyptic world. From being chased as a rookie to now becoming the highest commander of three large Safe Zones, Wang Chao's growth had been witnessed by all.
Yang Mengying leaped into Wang Chao's arms, and he spun her around several times, eliciting cheers from everyone present. They soon made their way to the study on the second floor, which had once belonged to Elder Zhang but was now Wang Chao's office. Despite the change in ownership, it remained a symbol of power where every significant military and political decision was made.
Before long, they realized that Zhang Fusheng was missing.
With no other choice, Wang Chao recounted the events that had transpired in the capital, detailing the war between Ganzhou and the capital. After hearing his account, everyone fell silent, their faces darkened with contemplation and sorrow. Tang Feng and Da Qiang had never seen Zhang Fusheng, leaving them feeling somewhat awkward. Meanwhile, others were either too close to Zhang Fusheng to distance themselves or simply unaware of his true nature.
"He was such a kind person. In the twenty years I've known him, I've never seen him use his status or power to bully anyone," Wu Wan'er said, her voice trembling. As someone who had spent the longest time with Zhang Fusheng, she found it hardest to accept his transformation into a figure of evil. She choked up and could say no more. Wang Chao understood that although Wu Wan'er regretted her engagement to Zhang Fusheng, she still harbored feelings for him.
Even Wang Chao struggled to believe such an outcome; how could someone like him be seen as a demon?
"He should have been the guardian of this capital!" Wang Chao said sadly. "He has silently protected this city for twenty years. From the moment he was born here, he became its protector. If anyone else held such a position, who knows what heinous acts they might commit..."
In fact, every night during these days, Wang Chao would recall what Zhang Fusheng had said. He often wondered if he hadn't pressured Zhang Fusheng or accused Jian Xiaoqing of being a spy, perhaps Jian Xiaoqing wouldn't have died and Zhang Fusheng wouldn't have turned out this way. Was it better to gain love at the cost of losing strength or to become an unparalleled monster?
Wang Chao couldn't make sense of it and didn't want to dwell on it any longer.
"But Zhang Fusheng will always be my brother!" Wang Chao said, unable to hold back his tears.
Yet Zhang Fusheng remained missing. Life had to go on; despite his guilt, Wang Chao couldn't let it consume him. If Zhang Fusheng was gone, then he would have to become the second Zhang Fusheng—the greatest good person in the world. After exchanging pleasantries, over thirty thousand troops in the military district assembled, all dressed uniformly and ready for deployment.
As the highest commander of the three Safe Zones, Wang Chao appointed new positions for his subordinate officers, including the Shen Sisters and Big Strong Tang Feng. Zhu Feng was appointed as the captain of the Thunder Strike Team while Wang Xiaochuan became its vice captain but remained close by—essentially serving as Wang Chao's personal guard.
After arranging the appointments for the officers, Wang Chao proceeded to assign the leaders of each Safe Zone. Tang Feng, being from the northwest, was assigned to oversee everything in the Ganzhou Safe Zone, with Shi Huacheng assisting him. The capital was entrusted to Shen Zhiying and Wu Wan'er, both natives of the capital, while the remaining personnel returned to the Jing City Safe Zone.
"Although we are separated now, as long as we can establish a high-speed route between the two places, it will only take two or three days for back and forth travel!" Wang Chao comforted everyone. Considering the distances between Jing City and the capital, as well as Ganzhou and the capital, they were not very far apart; thus, the capital naturally became a connecting point for both sides. After staying in the capital for about a week, the large troop set off simultaneously.
The road-clearing army and scouts had already departed a week earlier. Wang Chao led his Thunder Strike Team of a hundred men on their journey from the capital towards Jing City Safe Zone. Tang Feng had also set off with the road-clearing army a week prior, assisted by Shi Huacheng, an old subordinate of Huangfu Yan. They should not encounter any significant obstacles in Ganzhou.
As they traveled back, the weather grew colder, making road-clearing work challenging. The route was congested with vehicles since the capital had always been China's political, cultural, and economic center. Wang Chao's convoy moved at a pace comparable to walking; it took them over a week just to leave the capital. Fortunately, as they gradually distanced themselves, there were fewer vehicles on the road.
Wang Chao thought to himself that it was indeed impressive how different things were in the capital. Although his small town was only half a day's journey away from it, he couldn't help but wonder why there was such a stark contrast. However, after leaving his small town, Wang Chao had never returned home again. It wasn't that he didn't want to visit; rather, the Nuclear Power Plant there had exploded, and he estimated that his hometown had become a Ghost City.
Even though he had already undergone mutation, who knew what would happen if he were exposed to Nuclear Radiation again? Although three years had passed and the radiation had diminished significantly, Wang Chao still dared not recklessly enter that area. During previous searches, he had designated his small town and its surrounding areas as restricted zones, prohibiting anyone from entering.
After a hurried journey, they finally arrived at Yucheng and decided to camp there for the night. Most of Yucheng's residents had either gone to the capital or Ganzhou. Following the great battle in Yucheng where millions of Zombies perished in this city, it had turned into a ghost town. At nightfall, it appeared eerily desolate.
"This Yucheng is really creepy," Wang Chao remarked as he felt Yang Mengying grip his hand tightly.
Shen Zhitao glanced at Wang Chao and said, "Isn't this all thanks to your transformation? You single-handedly wiped out all the Zombies here along with most of the humans. If it weren't for Zhang Fusheng, you would have perished here three years ago."
"Is it my fault then?" Wang Chao replied helplessly.
