The inn they had just found collapsed unexpectedly, something no one could have predicted. However, Wang Chao and his companions were not extravagant people; they could sleep in a presidential suite or lie down in a dormitory. After spending a night in a tent, Wang Chao woke up early the next morning. By the time he got up, the army had already begun clearing the highway. It wasn't until the sun was high in the sky that Wang Chao finally got out of bed. After a simple breakfast, he set off with the security team.
Yucheng could only be considered a second-tier city. Compared to the capital, there were far fewer cars on the road, making it easier to clear the way. Wang Chao wondered when he would be able to board a plane again. He remembered that the only time he had flown was with his Orphanage Director, who had told young Wang Chao that when he opened the window of the plane and spat, it rained when it hit the ground.
At that time, young Wang Chao didn't understand anything and felt both nauseous and envious. He thought that rain fell from the sky because people on planes spat it out. It wasn't until many years later that he realized that planes couldn't actually open their windows; it turned out that it was also the director's first flight! As Wang Chao lost himself in thought during the journey, he recalled many amusing childhood memories.
He shared these stories with Yang Mengying and Shen Zhitao, who were sitting beside him, causing them to giggle uncontrollably. As they talked and walked, it was nearly noon when an urgent scout rushed back and stopped in front of Wang Chao's vehicle. "Captain! Captain! We found a strange creature blocking the highway ahead."
"Another monster?" Wang Chao asked. "Is it something like a zombie?"
The soldier shook his head. "No, if it were just zombies, our advance team could handle them. But this creature is something else entirely; it doesn't fear bullets, and we didn't dare approach it. It's round and bouncy like a large rubber ball, covered in legs. I can't even describe it! You should go take a look yourself."
Wang Chao nodded and got out of the car, with Shen Zhitao following him. Knowing her personality, he didn't stop her but instructed Zhu Feng to continue leading the main force to clear the way while he took his hundred-man security team toward where the scout had reported seeing the creature. After running for over an hour, Wang Chao finally spotted several creatures in the distance.
These monsters looked bizarre; they were about one meter in diameter and covered in legs, resembling cartoonish piglets but with an abundance of limbs.
"Let's shoot at it!" Wang Chao said to Wang Xiaochuan.
Wang Xiaochuan was unsure what kind of monster this was; it looked both cute and terrifying. Following Wang Chao's orders, he fired a shot at it. The bullet hit the creature as if striking rubber, bouncing off harmlessly. The creature tilted to one side but quickly righted itself using its many legs, flipping back over.
"Damn it! If I accept this setting, this monster actually looks quite adorable," Wang Chao remarked. "It doesn't seem harmful at all!" As he spoke, he approached the creature. When it saw him coming, it neither lunged to bite nor ran away; instead, it continued to hop around nearby. Wang Chao kicked at it lightly, causing it to topple over again but quickly regain its balance on its other legs.
Seeing this, Wang Chao reached out to touch it. The creature seemed to enjoy it, making squeaking sounds of delight. Then he noticed another similar creature grazing by the side of the highway. His hands trembled at this revelation: this meant there were herbivorous creatures even in such chaotic times. This indicated that these monsters had not been infected by the Zombie Virus; but if they weren't caused by the Zombie Virus, how did they come to look like this?
As Wang Chao pondered, Wang Xiaochuan was already playing with the creature, kicking it around in a round and amusing manner. It was only then that everyone noticed that despite its strange appearance, the creature was quite docile.
"Captain, I can even tell their genders! If it weren't for all these legs, they really wouldn't be much different from pigs. But this thing is so round!" Wang Xiaochuan kicked the creature away, and it scampered back eagerly. Seeing this, Wang Chao suddenly had an idea. He chuckled to himself; bringing this creature back to Gao Rui would make for a great gift.
Gao Rui was a biologist who loved animals, especially those with unusual appearances.
"You can tell their genders already?" Wang Chao said with a grin as he put his arm around Wang Xiaochuan's shoulder.
Wang Xiaochuan replied, somewhat confused, "Yeah, I'll kick another one for you to see later."
Wang Chao shook his head and said to Wang Xiaochuan, "I won't watch anymore. But since you're so skilled, I have a task for you: catch one male and one female to bring back!"
As he spoke, Wang Chao had already picked up one of the creatures and started walking back. He thought that bringing back three should suffice—he could dissect one while letting Gao Rui study the genetics of the other male and female. It wasn't that Wang Chao was particularly kind to Gao Rui; it was just that Gao Rui always looked at him with a unique gaze. Those who understood knew it was because Wang Chao was the first human subject of Gao Rui's genetic modifications. Those who didn't might think Gao Rui had a crush on him.
Watching Wang Chao's retreating figure, Wang Xiaochuan looked at the creatures scurrying around and felt a sense of despair...
"Why are you standing so far away?" Since seeing the creature, Shen Zhitao had kept her distance, looking more terrified than when encountering mutated zombies. As Wang Chao approached her while holding one of the creature's legs, she waved her hands frantically and exclaimed, "Stay away from me! I’m really scared of things with so many legs!"
"I never expected you, the mighty Shen Zhitao, would be afraid of such harmless creatures!" With that, Wang Chao pretended to throw the creature near Shen Zhitao, causing her to scream in fright. This was the first time Wang Chao realized what scared Shen Zhitao.
"Captain!" Turning around, he saw Wang Xiaochuan approaching with a creature in each hand. "I caught one male and one female! Sister Shen, look!"
Seeing that Shen Zhitao was also present, Wang Xiaochuan made a show of wanting her to take a look: "I picked the two biggest ones!"
"Get lost!" Shen Zhitao shouted.
