A bitter almond taste spread from Wang Chao's mouth, making him feel as if he were a mute person eating bitter herbs, unable to express his discomfort. He wondered whether this substance was poisonous. Wang Chao spat a few times, but the substance had already turned to liquid and flowed directly down his throat, rendering his efforts futile. Yang Mengying and Shen Zhitao noticed something had fallen into Wang Chao's mouth and approached him with concern.
Fortunately, Wang Chao did not feel any discomfort in his body, so it seemed that the substance posed no real danger. Seeing that it was just a false alarm, everyone began to pull the giant python's corpse aside. After a full hour of effort, they finally managed to move the creature out of the way. Once this task was completed, the convoy continued on its journey. Ahead, the highway began to diverge from the small town, and there were very few vehicles on the road; they encountered no more strange monsters.
However, there were plenty of zombies along the way. The soldiers stood on the trucks, firing their weapons without getting off, as if they were playing a shooting game at an amusement park. The convoy picked up speed and returned to Jing City by the afternoon. As they entered Jing City, Wang Chao couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia; this place was practically his second hometown.
The sights, the people, and the atmosphere all gave Wang Chao a feeling of familiarity and warmth. The people responded to him in kind; everyone either saluted him or greeted him as if he were one of their own. After arranging for the military to be stationed, the remaining troops had other missions: to establish connections between various small Safe Zones. Eventually, with Jing City, Ganzhou, and the capital as central points, the entire central region of Huaxia could be connected—except for the eastern and northeastern parts.
Thinking about this filled Wang Chao with immense excitement; it was an excitement that came from being human. There were still many large cities that had yet to be contacted. The eastern region had already established trade with Coastal areas; what about the northeast? However, there weren't many people there, and there weren't many large Safe Zones either. It would be better to solidify connections in the central region before considering moving north or south. With these thoughts in mind, Wang Chao headed towards Gao Rui's laboratory with Wang Xiaochuan.
Gao Rui's laboratory was located far away from the residential area of the Safe Zone. This was partly because Gao Rui's experiments were too extreme and terrifying; anyone who saw them would undoubtedly think he was some kind of twisted professor. Additionally, Gao Rui needed a large space for his work. Fortunately, there was plenty of room in Jing City's Safe Zone; even tens of thousands more people could be accommodated comfortably.
"What is this place?" Wang Xiaochuan asked as he looked at the vast area surrounded by barbed wire and heavily guarded. "Is this a prison?"
Wang Chao shook his head and replied, "This place is even scarier than a prison!" As they spoke, they entered the facility. Wang Xiaochuan was still holding onto three small creatures when he saw Wang Chao; the soldiers saluted and opened the door without saying anything further. They walked down a long corridor until they reached the last room.
As soon as they entered, Wang Xiaochuan saw enormous surveillance screens displaying various monsters that looked bizarre and strange. He was astonished; it turned out that this expansive area was Gao Rui's monster research facility. Looking at Gao Rui again, he noticed that he was still wearing tattered clothes and appeared unkempt and dirty.
Although Gao Rui heard someone enter, he didn't turn around but simply asked, "What brings you here?"
"Hey, still so absorbed in your work!" Wang Chao said.
Upon hearing that it was Wang Chao who had returned, Gao Rui quickly turned around and said, "Oh, you're back! By the way, how have you been lately? Any genetic mutations? Have you been able to use those abilities? I think you could grow a pair of wings, just like an angel's. Scientifically speaking, that's definitely plausible!"
Gao Rui turned back and began to chatter away with Wang Chao, leaving him feeling somewhat speechless. It was at this moment that Gao Rui noticed the strange creature that Wang Xiaochuan was holding. He slapped his thigh and exclaimed, "What the hell is this thing? It doesn't bite? It's not carnivorous? Wow, it looks so cute! This is truly a miracle from above!"
As he spoke, he snatched the three creatures from Wang Xiaochuan without a second thought and ignored the two of them as he locked them in a cage, fiddling with them excitedly. Wang Xiaochuan stood there dumbfounded and quietly said to Wang Chao, "Captain, is this guy a madman or a scientist? The more I look at him, the more I feel like..."
Wang Xiaochuan couldn't even find the right words to describe Gao Rui.
Wang Chao patted Wang Xiaochuan on the shoulder and said, "Scientists are all a bit crazy; you'll get used to it!"
After leaving Gao Rui, the next person Wang Chao sought out was Xiao Wei. Since Wang Chao had left, Xiao Wei had been fully responsible for the operations in the Safe Zone. Now, Xiao Wei had grown from a child into a teenager of about fourteen or fifteen. When he saw Wang Chao, he greeted him and said, "Brother Wang, you don't need to ask; there's only one thing that feels off."
Hearing Xiao Wei's words, Wang Chao furrowed his brow. He hadn't expected to hear such news upon his return. He asked, "What's going on? What happened?"
Xiao Wei replied, "The convoy heading to Coastal Trade Salt hasn't returned yet. While it's not unusual for them to encounter unexpected zombies along the way and be delayed for three to five days, it's been a week now since they left. This situation is concerning; something must have happened on the road."
Wang Chao pondered Xiao Wei's words for a moment.
Xiao Wei continued, "So here's the thing: when you all left before, there wasn't anyone here who could go check on things. Now that you're back, I think it would be best if you led a team to investigate. Your strength is high enough that even if you encounter something tricky, you won't be completely helpless."
Wang Chao nodded in agreement; Xiao Wei was right. He turned to Wang Xiaochuan and said, "Wang Xiaochuan, tell the guard team to assemble and get the convoy from Liu Jie. We’ll meet at the gate in an hour and set off immediately!"
"Understood!" Wang Xiaochuan nodded and turned to carry out the task.
