The water in the pond was churning violently, resembling boiling hot water as it rolled up and down, splashing everywhere and making a crackling sound. At that moment, Wang Chao could clearly hear Zhu Feng's shouts, which seemed to stem from a fear of some monster lurking nearby, causing everyone to hide in the skyscraper, too scared to make a sound. What kind of monster could frighten these people so much?
And what about Lin Chuan? Lin Chuan commanded an army of at least ten thousand troops. Although their firearms and ammunition were limited, how could such a large force be unable to deal with a few monsters? As Wang Chao pondered this, he suddenly saw shadows shooting out of the water with a whoosh, moving at incredible speed, like crossbow bolts fired from the depths. Their speed was comparable to the arrows shot by Zhuang Peng!
Wang Chao raised his Panlong Blade to block them. He heard a series of thuds as the projectiles struck his blade, but they quickly ricocheted off in different directions. Even with Wang Chao's diamond-level skills, he couldn't discern what kind of monsters these were! At that moment, he finally understood why Coastal's ten thousand troops were unable to handle these creatures.
These things were just too fast!
As the saying goes, "In martial arts, nothing is unbreakable; speed is invincible."
If you couldn't even see what these monsters looked like, how could you hope to defeat them? Wang Chao realized that aside from Shen Zhitao, Little Grudge, Zhu Feng, and himself, there was no one else at the Golden Upper level present; regardless of their numbers, they would not stand a chance against these monsters. With this thought in mind, Wang Chao shouted, "Quickly retreat into that building! Zhu Feng, Taozi, Zhuang Peng, Little Grudge—stay with me to deal with the monsters!"
Military orders are absolute. Upon receiving Wang Chao's command, the guards showed no hesitation and ran straight toward the hundred-story building. However, at that moment, it seemed that all the monsters in the pond had already launched themselves out. No one knew how many there were; all they saw were shadows flashing before their eyes. The speed of these creatures was astonishing. A group of seven or eight people in the distance didn't have time to retreat and were quickly surrounded by the swarm of shadows.
They didn't even have time to scream or draw their daggers; as soon as the shadows passed by, those who had been standing there suddenly vanished without a trace, as if they had never existed at all. Witnessing this scene left Wang Chao utterly shocked. But it was only then that his eyes began to adjust to the speed of these monsters.
He focused his gaze and realized that these creatures were actually fish about the size of an adult's hand. Their tails were large, allowing them to achieve such incredible speed by propelling themselves off the ground and soaring through the air. Whenever they encountered an object mid-air, they would use their tails to bounce off again.
If they came across their prey while airborne, these fish would thrash their tails while opening their mouths wide to bite. Their mouths were filled with razor-sharp teeth—though not long, they were numerous and densely packed. The sheer number of these fish resembled a locust swarm descending upon crops during a plague; once they passed over farmland, everything would be devoured.
In mere moments of launching themselves through the air, countless fish could completely consume a living person down to the last bone fragment. It was no wonder that when they entered the Safe Zone earlier, there wasn't even a single corpse on the ground. It seemed that during the tsunami, these fish had been churned up from the deep sea and had begun feasting on those within the Safe Zone.
After the tsunami passed, these fish gathered in this large pond, waiting for more prey to arrive. The footsteps of those earlier had startled them; what Wang Chao saw as ripples in the water was merely a sign that the fish were preparing to launch themselves again. This meant that even the slightest movement could provoke an attack from these creatures; it was precisely this reason that made the residents of Coastal hiding in the skyscraper too afraid to come out.
Wang Chao couldn't help but wonder how long these people had been holed up in this building without food or drink.
Though the description was lengthy, it was merely a fleeting thought in Wang Chao's mind. At that moment, the guards had retreated entirely into the building. Wang Chao stood near the pond, where the Flying Fish were most abundant. With a swift motion, he wielded his Panlong Blade, creating a flurry of blade strikes. Although the fish moved with incredible speed, they were no match for the hard edge of the Panlong Blade.
The earlier sounds of splashing were from the Flying Fish biting against the blade, their bodies as soft as any ordinary fish. Despite their speed, Wang Chao was not slow either; within just a few minutes, a small hill of fish corpses had piled up around him. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed that countless fish corpses surrounded the others as well.
Yet even so, there were still countless Flying Fish in sight. It was hard to tell just how many of these creatures inhabited the vast pond.
After half an hour of intense combat, everyone's stamina began to wane, while the Flying Fish showed no signs of diminishing. Wang Chao noticed that Shen Zhitao's dagger had already dulled, and her movements were noticeably slower. At that moment, a dozen Flying Fish swooped in from behind her. Although she sensed the danger approaching from behind, she was unable to react in time.
With gritted teeth, Shen Zhitao prepared to endure the bites of the dozen Flying Fish. Just then, a hand grabbed her arm and pulled her back. She turned to see Wang Chao pulling her into his embrace as the Flying Fish sank their teeth into him instead. Even with his genetically enhanced body modified by Gao Rui, Wang Chao could not withstand the sharp fangs of the Flying Fish.
In that instant, Wang Chao raised his left arm to shield Shen Zhitao and most of his own body while continuing to swing his Panlong Blade with his right hand to fend off the Flying Fish. He glanced over at Zhu Feng Manor's Peng, who was also struggling; aside from Little Grudge transforming into a shadow with little effect, her attacks were far too weak. Though she wielded a dagger, her efficiency was lacking.
If they continued fighting like this, everyone would be drained of energy by these Flying Fish and eventually become their prey, leaving nothing behind but scraps. Realizing this, Wang Chao quickly shouted, "Fall back into the building! We need to regroup!"
Wang Xiaochuan and the others waited at the front door of the building. Seeing everyone retreating while standing their ground, they prepared to open the door for them. A glance exchanged among them conveyed mutual understanding; then they all abandoned their attacks and rushed through the door, keeping the Flying Fish at bay outside.
