Fortunately, although those fish were incredibly fast and had sharp steel teeth, the Flying Fish did not eat glass. So even though the glass was shattering with a loud crash, it effectively blocked the attacks from the Flying Fish. Realizing they could not hunt again, the fish rolled and bounced back into the large pond, disappearing in the blink of an eye. Looking down, the pile of Flying Fish corpses that had formed a small hill was completely gone.
It wasn't that these Flying Fish had come back to life; rather, their bodies had been entirely devoured by the living Flying Fish. No wonder there were no corpses on the road except for some sand, stones, and broken wood. It wasn't that the tsunami's power was too weak; it was just that these Flying Fish consumed their food at an astonishing speed, like someone who hadn't eaten for days sweeping away everything in their path.
Looking at the others, Zhu Feng and Zhuang Peng had numerous wounds on their bodies, each marked by small holes where the Flying Fish had bitten through their clothes and flesh. Blood stained their skin, making it painful to look at. Yet these men did not frown or utter a sound; they bandaged themselves up quietly, truly embodying what it meant to be tough men. In contrast, Wang Chao appeared to be the most severely injured among them.
Given Wang Chao's strength, enduring for over an hour shouldn't have been a problem. However, seeing that everyone else was showing signs of fatigue—especially Shen Zhitao, who had nearly been torn apart by a Flying Fish—Wang Chao had no choice but to retreat to the building for temporary shelter. When everyone looked at him, they saw his back was a bloody mess; it was unclear how many bites he had sustained in that moment. Shen Zhitao, usually independent and fearless, had tears welling up in her eyes. She knew that if it weren't for Wang Chao protecting her, he wouldn't have ended up in such a state.
"Wang Chao, take off your shirt; I'll treat your wounds," Shen Zhitao said to him.
Wang Chao looked at Shen Zhitao's self-reproachful expression and quietly removed his shirt while softly saying to her, "I'm fine; it's just a minor injury. I've had wounds far worse than this before." Shen Zhitao understood that Wang Chao was trying to comfort her, but what he said wasn't entirely wrong. The injuries Wang Chao had sustained over the years were indeed increasingly severe, with several close calls with death.
As they spoke, the lobby on the first floor was already crowded with people. In addition to the hundred members of the security team, there were also onlookers gathered around. Even upstairs, people occasionally peeked down to see what was happening. At that moment, someone shouted for Commander Wang. Wang Chao turned to see it was soldiers from Jing City Safe Zone responsible for transporting coal and salt—about a hundred of them.
No wonder these soldiers hadn't returned for three or five days; they had been trapped in this building along with those from Coastal Safety Zone due to the Flying Fish.
"What exactly is going on?" Wang Chao asked as he sat on a raised platform on the first floor while Shen Zhitao bandaged him.
The Convoy Captain stepped forward and said to Wang Chao, "Commander Wang, five days ago we were scheduled to transport coal to Coastal Safety Zone and bring back salt. However, when we arrived here, we found that it seemed to have been hit by a tsunami; everywhere there were signs of destruction caused by the waves. Seeing this situation, I immediately ordered our trucks to be parked behind a nearby building and then came here on foot to conduct rescue operations."
Wang Chao nodded; no wonder he had seen some cars pushed away by the waves upon arrival but hadn't spotted any destroyed trucks. He gestured for the captain to continue.
The captain nodded and continued speaking: "When we arrived here, the tsunami had just receded. There were ruins everywhere—collapsed buildings and scattered corpses—and many injured people needing help. Just as we were about to start our rescue efforts, however, those strange creatures surged out of the large pond again—dark masses everywhere—we couldn't even tell what they were."
As the captain spoke, a look of lingering fear crossed his face. "These monsters are truly terrifying. Those who get entangled with them vanish in an instant, and even the corpses on the ground have been devoured by these creatures. Even though we all have guns, we are no match for them. We can't see anything to shoot at! First, we're afraid of hitting each other, and second, we can't aim properly!"
Wang Chao nodded.
"We had no choice but to retreat into this building along with the military and civilians from the Safe Zone," the captain continued. "During this time, we cautiously tried to venture out, but any little noise would alarm the monsters in the pond. We simply couldn't get out. It's been three days now. That's the situation."
"Mm." Wang Chao waved his hand and said, "Alright, you can go now. I'll think of a way."
Having heard this, Wang Chao finally understood the ins and outs of the situation. It seemed he could handle these Flying Fish, but their speed was overwhelming; he couldn't defeat them all by himself. While he was deep in thought, he saw Zhao Qin and Lin Chuan coming down from upstairs. It turned out that they had already seen Wang Chao and his group through the window while he was dealing with the monsters.
Once they saw that Wang Chao and the others had retreated inside, they stepped out from among the residents.
Zhao Qin smiled brightly upon seeing Wang Chao, while Lin Chuan wore his usual sour expression. His face darkened even more when he noticed Shen Zhitao tending to Wang Chao's wounds. Wang Chao had heard that Lin Chuan seemed to look down on anyone outside of the Seven Great Families, especially disapproving of their women dating outsiders. Moreover, having been defeated by Wang Chao with a single punch before, Lin Chuan naturally harbored no goodwill towards him. However, Wang Chao didn't mind and asked, "Zhao Ge, what's the situation at the Coastal Safety Zone?"
At this question, Zhao Qin's smile instantly vanished as he spoke with concern. "The Coastal Safety Zone has over two hundred thousand people. When the tsunami hit, everyone was caught off guard; several thousand died in the disaster, and many more are still missing—likely with little hope left. Right now, about one hundred thousand people are crammed into this building. If this continues, they'll all perish here!"
Wang Chao sighed; Zhao Qin was right—there was a severe shortage of water and food.
"Have you tried escaping through the back?" Wang Chao asked.
"We've tried that method too," Zhao Qin replied grimly. "But unfortunately, there's a small river behind this building that connects to the pond underground. So those monsters have also flooded into that river."
"So we're surrounded by a bunch of fish?" Wang Chao said with a wry smile.
"Fish?" Zhao Qin asked in confusion.
Wang Chao then remembered that these people couldn't even see what the Flying Fish looked like, and he couldn't help but fall into deep thought.
