Returning to Jing City, Wang Chao first arrived at Gao Rui's place. The continuous appearance of monsters near the small town made Wang Chao feel that something was amiss. These creatures were bizarre beyond his expectations, defying biological norms. After all, Wang Chao had never seen any animal with so many legs (insects excluded), but he could assert that those monsters were definitely not insects.
With his doubts, he entered Gao Rui's laboratory. Pushing the door open, he saw a disemboweled monster on a metal stand—it was the multi-legged creature that Wang Chao had brought back to Gao Rui earlier. The various internal organs were laid bare before him, and Wang Chao felt like he was about to vomit; it was simply too disgusting.
A living creature had been dissected like this!
Hearing Wang Chao's movements, Gao Rui turned around and said, "By the way, I studied the monster you gave me and discovered something incredible!" As he spoke, Gao Rui picked up a document from the table and handed it to Wang Chao. Confused, Wang Chao took the document and stared at it for a long time without understanding anything; it was filled with numerical elements and similar data. The only chemistry knowledge he remembered from high school was a mishap that led to an explosion, and he couldn't recall anything else.
"I can't make sense of this either!" Wang Chao said helplessly.
Gao Rui exclaimed, "Seriously? You can't even read this? Did you even go to college?" Wang Chao felt helpless; after all, he had studied finance and didn't understand these biological and chemical concepts. Gao Rui continued, "To put it simply, these creatures have undergone mutations—changes that should take millions of years have happened in just a few years. From my observations, it's due to two reasons: one is the Zombie Virus, and the other is that this monster has been subjected to extreme Nuclear Radiation. Logically speaking, such internal structures are extremely unstable and would easily perish."
Knowing that Wang Chao lacked knowledge in this area, Gao Rui explained in simpler terms.
Gao Rui went on, "I don't know how the Zombie Virus outbreak occurred; I've never seen such structures or compositions before. Could they be naturally occurring? But that's impossible! Were they artificially created? If so, the person who developed this would have chemical and biological knowledge far ahead of this world by centuries. It's strange—truly strange—but..."
As Gao Rui spoke, he fell into deep thought. Hearing this, Wang Chao also pondered deeply. He wasn't thinking about biochemical issues; instead, he considered that the many monsters he had encountered might have been animals infected by the Zombie Virus and subjected to Nuclear Radiation. The small town may be small, but it had two zoos. If those animals mutated and escaped from there, everything would make sense.
Just like the Python he encountered earlier—there were no suitable habitats for Pythons in China. If a Python appeared in China, it must have been imported from abroad, and naturally, the place of import would be a zoo. It seemed that the small town was a dangerous place. Noticing that Gao Rui had fallen into his own thoughts again, Wang Chao decided not to disturb him and walked out.
As he reached the door, he saw Shen Zhitao approaching him. She said to Wang Chao, "Just received news from the capital—they found some relics left by Zhang Lao. They can't locate Zhang Fusheng; those items are just sitting there. My sister and Wu Wan'er want you to decide what to do about it." Wang Chao nodded and replied, "Looks like I've become quite busy too; I didn't expect that just a few days away from Jing City would lead to more urgent matters."
Shen Zhitao remarked, "Well, that's what happens when you're an officer."
This matter was not urgent; he could head out early the next morning. For that night, Wang Chao intended to enjoy himself in Jing City. As the saying goes, a moment of spring night is worth a thousand gold. The dark night, with a hazy moon, brought a sense of calm to everything. However, that night in Wang Chao's room was anything but peaceful, as he and Yang Mengying were engaged in activities not meant for outsiders.
The next morning, Wang Chao woke up early. Yang Mengying was still asleep, exhausted from the previous night, so he decided not to disturb her. He got up and prepared to head to the capital. As he stepped outside, he saw Shen Zhitao's car waiting for him. Standing beside the car was Wang Xiaochuan, who asked Wang Chao, "Captain, are you sure you don't need us to accompany you?"
Wang Chao shook his head and replied, "No need. The highway between the capital and Jing City has been opened. Shen Zhitao and I will take turns driving; it should be quick. With my skills, I shouldn't encounter much danger. Besides, I have a more important task for you." With that, Wang Chao pulled out a map from his pocket and handed it to Wang Xiaochuan.
"Here’s the route I've marked for you. Follow this path to search; it's time to check on the south." Wang Chao continued, "The north will eventually be reclaimed by humanity, but we haven't received any news from the south. It's time to make contact there. This search will last two weeks; after that, report back to me with any findings. Be careful on the road."
"Rest assured, Captain!" Wang Xiaochuan saluted and then left.
Wang Chao nodded and opened the passenger door, taking his seat. He turned to Shen Zhitao and said, "Driver! Let's go!" Shen Zhitao rolled his eyes at Wang Chao but said nothing more as he drove off. To lighten the mood during the journey, Wang Chao shared all his amusing anecdotes about home, which made the atmosphere much more relaxed.
There’s no need to dwell on the journey; although they encountered numerous zombies along the way, Wang Chao dealt with them all without incident and finally arrived safely in the capital.
Upon reaching the military district, soldiers saluted as soon as they recognized Wang Chao. When they arrived at the second floor of Small Building, they noticed Wu Wan'er coming around from behind the building. Upon seeing Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao, she exchanged pleasantries with them before Wang Chao asked, "I heard you found Elder Zhang's belongings?"
Wu Wan'er nodded and replied, "After Elder Zhang passed away, my grandfather disappeared without a trace. While I was cleaning out his room, I found a letter addressed to Zhang Fusheng. However, Zhang Fusheng is nowhere to be found. When I opened it, I saw that it contained some items Elder Zhang had left for him. Since I couldn't find Zhang Fusheng, I thought it best to come find you first."
Wang Chao nodded in understanding. In fact, on the day Elder Zhang passed away, he had told Zhang Fusheng that once he defeated Huangfu Yan in battle, he would give him three items. Presumably, those were what the letter referred to.
