For an entire week, Wang Chao had done little else but distribute manuals in various Safe Zones. He placed several copies in each zone, believing that those around him should have the opportunity to practice at any time. For the people in the Safe Zones, it meant that those who contributed could engage in training.
This approach not only instilled a sense of competition among the inhabitants of the Safe Zones but also fostered a sense of belonging. Moreover, it was beneficial for scouting talent; if he could find someone like Professor Sun or Gao Rui, Wang Chao would be delighted. The remaining days passed leisurely for Wang Chao, who wandered around Jing City Safe Zone with Yang Mengying, enjoying their time together.
After two carefree days, the guard team returned.
Zhu Feng immediately sought out Wang Chao. Noticing Zhu Feng's grim expression, Wang Chao sensed something was amiss; it seemed he had encountered trouble during his reconnaissance in the south. Given Zhu Feng's typically stoic demeanor, it was clear that whatever had happened was significant.
Wang Chao hurriedly asked, "What happened? Did something go wrong with the guard team?"
The only thing that could make Zhu Feng this anxious was likely related to the guard team. As expected, Zhu Feng nodded and said, "Yes, the guard team consists of one hundred members divided into ten squads of ten each. They spread out according to your map and ventured deeper into the south—some crossed mountains while others crossed rivers..."
Wang Chao nodded; this was indeed the route he had set. It significantly increased their chances of encountering Survivors. Such reconnaissance was not suited for large numbers; it would hinder mobility and complicate decision-making in emergencies when they needed to choose between attacking or retreating.
Zhu Feng continued, "The operation was scheduled for two weeks, but during this time we haven't found any Survivors. Perhaps due to time constraints, we couldn't delve deeper. About two or three days later, we were supposed to regroup at a designated location when suddenly a woman appeared and abducted Wang Xiaochuan!"
Wang Chao found himself momentarily bewildered by Zhu Feng's words; it felt as if someone had told him they twisted their ankle and thus couldn't play chess with him—it just seemed so out of place. Suppressing a somewhat schadenfreude thought, Wang Chao asked, "Who is that woman? Why did she abduct Wang Xiaochuan?"
Zhu Feng shook his head and replied, "I don't know who she is, but strangely enough, it seems she knew Wang Xiaochuan. He hardly resisted and even said something to her."
Hearing Zhu Feng's explanation left Wang Chao even more confused. What did this all mean? Was Wang Xiaochuan taken without resistance because he had fallen for this woman? Had he been so captivated by her beauty that he neglected his duties with the guard team? Or was there something more sinister at play—perhaps she had him under some kind of control?
"What did he say?" Wang Chao asked urgently.
Zhu Feng stared at Wang Chao and said seriously, "Wang Xiaochuan said that only you, the captain, can save him. He also mentioned that having more people wouldn't help; only you can rescue him!"
"What is all this about?" Wang Chao frowned and replied. "Do the people who kidnapped Wang Xiaochuan have a grudge against me? As far as I know, those who have a grudge against me are either dead or have resolved their issues, and it even involves the south. I don't know anyone down there."
Zhu Feng remarked, "What's strange is that I see no signs of trouble with Wang Xiaochuan. Otherwise, with his abilities, if he could just hold on, we have so many people here that we wouldn't be afraid of her harming him. After all, she is only at the Platinum Level. So I suspect this woman has some kind of mutated skill that we don't know about..."
Wang Chao sighed and said, "Regardless of the situation, this woman is coming after me. I must go south to rescue Wang Xiaochuan. Now, please give me a rough idea of the direction she went in and mark it on the map. I'll try to catch up to her."
"But I don't know if I'll be able to catch up to her this time. The security team is stationed at Jing City Safe Zone for now; if anything happens, wait for my return," Wang Chao added.
"Captain, are you saying you won't take us from the security team with you?" Zhu Feng asked.
Wang Chao nodded and replied, "First, Wang Xiaochuan said that having more people wouldn't help; only I can save him. Second, bringing the security team would make our target too big and slow us down."
Zhu Feng nodded in agreement. Although everyone in the security team was at the Golden Level, the person who kidnapped Wang Xiaochuan was at the Platinum Level. It wouldn't be easy for them to catch up to her, and indeed, their presence would make them an obvious target.
Wang Chao said, "Alright, I'll go prepare."
"This is how it is," Wang Chao told everyone. "I need to head south for a while. The duration is uncertain; after all, Wang Xiaochuan is as important to me as you all are to me. However, it shouldn't take too long. On one hand, I'm going to find Wang Xiaochuan; on the other hand, I'll also check on the situation in the south."
"So I'll leave the matters of the Safe Zone in your hands," Wang Chao instructed.
Xiao Wei helplessly replied, "You make it sound like you've managed the Safe Zone before. Don't worry; during your absence, we'll take good care of the Safe Zone."
"I'll go with you," Shen Zhitao said.
Wang Chao had initially planned to go alone for this mission, but seeing the spark in Shen Zhitao's eyes and hearing the determination in her voice, he sighed and replied, "Alright, let's set off!"
The two of them carried nothing with them because Shen Zhitao was aware of Wang Chao's secret regarding the Spatial Ring, a secret even Yang Mengying did not know. The Spatial Ring contained food, water, cigarettes and alcohol, gold, salt, energy crystals, firearms, and ammunition—essentially everything one could need. These items were among the most valuable in a post-apocalyptic world. After bidding farewell to everyone, they chose not to drive due to the impassable roads. Wang Chao concealed his true strength as a Golden Intermediate, while Shen Zhitao wore black contact lenses, appearing at first glance like an ordinary person who had not undergone any mutations or upgrades.
This was also to avoid drawing too much attention; otherwise, with Wang Chao's diamond-level abilities and Shen Zhitao's Platinum Level status, they would certainly attract unwanted complications. As the saying goes, wealth should not be flaunted; being low-key is the way to go.
After a week of traveling, the two finally arrived at the place where Wang Xiaochuan had been abducted.
