As they spoke, a few of them walked southward. Before long, they arrived at the Zhonghu Safety Zone. Wang Chao looked around and noticed that the underground of this Safe Zone was empty; the entire Safe Zone was actually built in the air. Due to the dense high-rise buildings nearby, the Zhonghu Safety Zone had connected these buildings with iron plates, supported by solid concrete pillars below.
It was as if the first floor had been hollowed out, leaving only the supporting walls, creating a breathtaking and masterful sight. Wang Chao couldn't help but exclaim, "This Safe Zone is truly ingenious!"
Iron Joy nodded in agreement and said, "That's right. It was initially designed to prevent zombies from breaking into the Safe Zone, allowing them to walk directly beneath it. Now that the zombies here have mostly been wiped out, let's not waste time; we should head up!" Wang Chao nodded, watching as Iron Joy approached a building. The entrance was not a glass door but an iron mesh gate.
Iron Joy reached in and unlocked it from the inside, and everyone filed in. He locked the door again and led Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao up the stairs until they reached the upper level of the Safe Zone. Wang Chao thought to himself that this design was brilliant; no matter what, zombies could never reach this place. Once inside the Safe Zone, Iron Joy first took Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao to the residential area.
Iron Joy guided them to register their names at the household registration office in the Zhonghu Safety Zone before leading them to a residential building. As they entered, they found a woman sitting at the entrance. Upon seeing Wang Chao and Shen Zhitao, she said, "You two must be new here. Room 402 on the fourth floor is vacant; you can stay there for now. Later, when you come down, Captain Iron Joy will take you to see what jobs are available."
The two nodded and accepted the key she handed them before heading upstairs. Wang Chao remarked, "Do you think this counts as cohabitation?" Shen Zhitao shot him a glare and replied, "Cohabitation? You wish! You'll be sleeping on the couch from now on. By the way, are we really going to live in this Safe Zone?"
Wang Chao nodded and said, "Yes. Since we just arrived in the south and know nothing about it yet, let's observe the situation here first. Besides, we need to find out who captured Wang Xiaochuan and where he escaped to; that's not something we can figure out quickly. For now, let's just stay here." Shen Zhitao nodded; it seemed they had no choice but to do so.
After quickly tidying up their things, they didn't want to keep Iron Joy waiting downstairs. The two hurried down to meet him, and Iron Joy continued to lead them toward the work department. Along the way, he explained that this department was responsible for assigning jobs to residents of the Zhonghu Safety Zone since it did not support idleness.
Men were generally assigned physical labor tasks such as manufacturing firearms or maintaining the Safe Zone itself. Those with higher abilities could be selected as members of the Royal Guard. The Zhonghu Safety Zone did not have a formal military; anyone with strength could form a team. However, their leader had to be recognized by the chief; if they strayed from his control, they would be eliminated.
Iron Joy was part of one such team and was among the strongest ones. There were about ten teams like this one, varying in quality. Their main tasks included searching for survivors and eliminating zombies while primarily guarding against Anfei Safe Zone. It seemed there was a longstanding feud between their chief and that of Anfei; both sides frequently clashed over resources.
However, according to Iron Joy, there appeared to be a secret squad around their chief—about ten women—all possessing abilities above Golden Upper rank, with one or two even at Platinum level. This squad was known for its mystery; Iron Joy had only seen them once and suspected they executed secret missions for their chief. In listening closely, Wang Chao realized that Iron Joy was inviting him to join his squad.
As for women in the Safe Zone, they typically engaged in light industrial work such as making clothes or cooking; some even assembled weapons like their male counterparts.
Iron Joy quietly informed Wang Chao that between the Zhonghu Safety Zone and the Anfei Safe Zone, a small Safe Zone had been established. The leader there was even more mysterious, and no one knew who it was. All that was known was that it was a large black market where anything could be bought as long as there were goods like food, cigarettes, alcohol, or gold—drugs, women, you name it.
Wang Chao was aware that similar situations existed in the north. In the Safe Zone under his jurisdiction, such activities were also present. A single cigarette could be worth a tael of gold. However, as long as there were no robberies, rapes, or drug dealings occurring, Wang Chao turned a blind eye to these underground transactions. After all, he had studied finance and understood the underlying principles.
However, from what Iron Joy described, this black market seemed to be a place where anything could be bought or sold without hesitation. Given that it was such a place, the leader and their subordinates must possess considerable power. But now was not the time to dwell on such matters; they arrived at the operations department where the staff saw Shen Zhitao's skills and mistakenly thought she was just an ordinary person who couldn't be promoted. They assigned her to work making clothes.
As for Wang Chao, the staff clearly recognized that he had been secured by someone.
Iron Joy cheerfully approached and discreetly handed three cigarettes to the staff member before saying, "Just keep her in my team."
The male staff member smiled and replied, "Since you want her so much, fine. I'll assign her to you."
As Wang Chao signed on the document, he couldn't help but think how ridiculous it was that he was only worth three cigarettes. What he didn't realize was that each strong team member added an extra layer of protection and survival chances outside; three cigarettes could already buy a beautiful girl for a week in the black market.
But what Iron Joy didn't know was that Wang Chao's value far exceeded those three cigarettes.
After everything was arranged, Iron Joy introduced the team members just like Wang Chao had done. The captain was naturally Iron Joy himself, while the vice captain was a young man named Li Kai who possessed strength at the Golden Upper level. He appeared somewhat dull and seemed not very talkative. This team was indeed strong; after all, Wang Chao's guard unit consisted of a hundred men who were only at the Golden Level.
"There are no missions today. Tomorrow we will head to a nearby city to search for food and gasoline!" Iron Joy announced.
Wang Chao nodded in agreement.
