A week later, Wang Chao returned to Jing City with a large troop. Along the way, he hardly encountered any Zombies. Especially on this major highway, both sides were now fenced with barbed wire. It seemed that during the month Wang Chao was away, the military strategies he had devised after unifying the North had taken effect, one of which was to clear the roads, thereby strengthening the connections between various Safe Zones. 0

Moreover, along the route, Wang Chao noticed that most of the Safe Zones had been equipped with power poles and electricity. As previously mentioned, aside from the small towns affected by radiation, numerous smaller Safe Zones surrounding the four major Safe Zones had been established. Those willing to relocate had moved into the larger Safe Zones. As for those who refused to leave, in Safe Zones with populations exceeding ten thousand, soldiers were dispatched to train the men there and set up electrical wiring. However, for those with fewer than ten thousand inhabitants, there simply wasn't enough energy to manage them; most of these people lived in villages. 0

Throughout the journey, Wang Chao listened to his Vice Captain Zhu Feng recount the tremendous changes that had occurred over the past month. It felt as if he were hearing tales from another world. It seemed that it wouldn't be long before this chaos would subside. But what path lay ahead for him? Wang Chao couldn't imagine; he only knew that it would take several years before reaching that point. 0

It was already mid-winter, yet it hadn't snowed in the North—later than in previous years. At this moment, Wang Chao turned to Shen Zhitao beside him and said, "It seems like New Year is just two months away!" Sitting in the car and watching the barbed wire and the scenery behind it recede—either dilapidated skyscrapers or fields overgrown with weeds, or railways bursting through their tracks—he reflected on how four years ago, when the Zombie crisis erupted, it was also winter. Now, it had been a full four years since then. 0

During these four years, countless survivors struggled to live on, fighting for power and battling for their own desires. They hadn't celebrated any holidays in all that time. 0

Wang Chao recalled how he spent New Year’s alone in a rented room watching the Spring Festival Gala, cursing while eating dishes prepared by Yang Mengying and Liu Xiaoxiao from the day before. It struck him that everyone had gone four years without television, computers, or internet access. He had never imagined a day when humanity would be without internet. 0

Yet now, they had all grown accustomed to it—even without electricity! 0

Upon returning to Jing City, everyone was overjoyed to see Wang Chao back, especially Yang Mengying, who held his hand tightly as if reluctant to let go. To his surprise, he noticed Yiyi holding Xiao Wei's hand; they seemed to be in a budding romance. Wang Chao realized they were no longer just kids but teenagers around fifteen or sixteen years old. 0

Xiao Wei looked at Wang Chao and magically pulled something out from behind him—it was a smartphone! Wang Chao took it in his hands; after four years without using one, he felt like a primitive man—extremely unaccustomed and struggling to operate it. He exclaimed, "Can we communicate now?" 0

Xiao Wei nodded and replied, "Although the infrastructure isn't fully developed yet and there aren't many signal towers, we can only use it within the four major Safe Zones for now. However, there are plenty of landlines; basically, every Safe Zone has at least one landline installed so we can be notified immediately about any issues!" 0

"Modernization and industrialization are rising again!" Xiao Wei exclaimed. "Before this, our lives felt like those before the Industrial Revolution. But now we've taken our first steps; humanity will eventually eradicate every Zombie left in this world and any monsters that threaten us. By then, we won't need barbed wire anymore." 0

That evening, they established contact via telephone with people from the other three major Safe Zones and learned that conditions there were quite good. The construction of these Safe Zones was thriving as well. Aside from some Zombies between villages that hadn't been cleared yet, almost all Zombies outside these major Safe Zones had been eliminated. Wang Chao promised to visit them soon. 0

In short, the North was now a scene of prosperity, and everyone knew that behind it all was a young man named Wang Chao. Without him, it would have taken many more years to reach this point. Over the past week, Wang Chao had been living comfortably, free from concerns about conspiracies or the chaos caused by Zombies. 0

When he had nothing to do, he would go out with Yang Mengying and Shen Zhitao to bask in the sun and gaze at the stars. When he had more time, he would visit various Safe Zones to drink with Tang Fengzhuang Peng and the others. The highways were well repaired, making travel convenient; even the farthest trips only took half a day. Compared to the South, it was much quicker. However, Wang Chao could also deduce that after Aivina unified the South, there would surely be a massive construction of infrastructure. 0

Shaking his head, he decided that since he had lost this round, there was no need to dwell on Southern affairs—that was Aivina's responsibility, not his to meddle in. 0

One day a few weeks later, Wang Chao was in the capital when he suddenly received a call from his security team member Zhu Feng. The team was responsible for transporting food to a small Safe Zone but discovered that the road passing through a small town had been unexpectedly cut off. It seemed to have been forcibly destroyed by something or someone. 0

Upon hearing about the small town, Wang Chao's heart sank. He knew what had happened there; just after the war with the Huangfu Family ended, countless monsters had surged forth from that area when Jing City passed through the back roads of the small town. These creatures were bizarre and unlike any species that had ever existed in this world. 0

Gao Rui had once said that it was likely a combination of the Zombie Virus and Nuclear Radiation that caused these monsters to undergo strange mutations. Now, with this road being severed, could it be the work of those very monsters? 0

On the phone, Wang Chao said, "You all wait by the road; I will head over immediately!" 0
