Zhu Feng, upon hearing the news, led ten members of the guard team towards the imperial capital, while the rest stayed behind to handle subsequent tasks. These included calming the villagers' emotions, locating the bodies of the fallen guards, burying the villagers who had died, and moving the body of the Elephant to check for any injured individuals beneath it. This series of tasks was not something that could be completed quickly.
Wang Chao was directing the guard members in these follow-up activities. Behind him, several guards were reassuring the surviving villagers. Out of over two thousand households, only a little more than a thousand remained. The Elephants had arrived in this small village late last night, their massive forms creating a rumbling sound that echoed through the quiet night.
The villagers initially thought there had been an earthquake and rushed out of their homes wrapped in blankets. However, as they emerged into the moonlight, they realized it was not an earthquake but rather a terrifying sight—dozens of these monstrous Elephants. The shock left them frozen in place, forgetting to flee until the Elephants began attacking. Only then did they react, scattering in panic.
But these ordinary villagers stood no chance against the Elephants. Within moments, about a hundred people had been devoured by these beasts. The rest either fled towards the mountains outside the village or hurriedly hid back inside their homes. A few Elephants chased after those who were running away, while the others remained behind, trying to lure humans out from their houses.
When Wang Chao and his team arrived at the village, they witnessed the destruction wrought by the Elephants. Fortunately, they had arrived in time; their swift response had prevented further disaster. As Wang Chao coordinated efforts among his team, he listened to the villagers' frantic voices behind him, sensing that there might still be some danger.
Wang Chao shook his head; it seemed that these people were just traumatized by their encounter with the Elephants and would recover soon. However, not long after, a soldier ran up to Wang Chao and saluted him before saying, "Captain, a villager just told me that there is still one Elephant that hasn't been dealt with!"
"What do you mean? Do they really know how many Elephants there were?" Wang Chao asked. "Tell them not to worry. Even if there's still one Elephant left, once we encounter it, it will meet its end. But since the villagers are already evacuating, whether that Elephant is alive or dead is no longer important! Calm them down and assure them that nothing else will happen!"
While they were speaking, an older man—around fifty years old—approached them. He appeared quite spirited despite the chaos caused by the Elephants and showed no signs of fear; instead, he seemed filled with righteous indignation. The Old Man called out from a distance, "Officer! Officer! This place is dangerous!"
Wang Chao furrowed his brow; this elder seemed different from the other villagers. He hurried over to him. The Old Man stood firm before Wang Chao and said urgently, "I am the village chief! Officer! This place is dangerous! You don't understand—there's still one Elephant here!"
Seeing Wang Chao's skeptical expression, he continued passionately, "You don't know! This Elephant is different from all the others; it's the leader of those ten or so Elephants! It measures over ten meters long and stands seven or eight meters tall! Moreover, it can walk on two legs and has spikes on its back—it looks less like an Elephant and more like a dinosaur!"
The Old Man pounded his chest anxiously and said breathlessly to Wang Chao, "Officer! That dinosaur-like Elephant chased other villagers up into the mountains! It could return at any moment! If we don't leave here quickly, we will be in grave danger when it comes back!"
Wang Chao understood from the Old Man's words just how serious this situation was. The main concern was the gathering of villagers; if it were just him and his guard team present, even if that Elephant was formidable, they could likely handle it. But with so many villagers crowded together now, Wang Chao wasn't confident he could eliminate that Elephant King without harming anyone.
"Alright," he said decisively. "You take your squad and protect the villagers as they leave. We'll handle everything else ourselves and bring our fallen brothers with us." He pointed to three bodies covered with white cloth on the ground. The soldier nodded as several men lifted the bodies while others stood by to protect the villagers during their evacuation. Just then, everyone heard a roar from the West Village Entrance—the unmistakable sound of an approaching Elephant.
Suddenly, the ground trembled, and the small stones on the dirt road began to bounce. The Elephant had arrived!
"Quick, get the villagers to safety!" Wang Chao shouted as he drew his Panlong Blade from the Spatial Ring once more. "The rest of you, come with me to intercept this Elephant!" With that, Wang Chao was the first to charge forward. Behind him, aside from the squad leading the villagers eastward, everyone else followed Wang Chao, heading straight for the West Village Entrance where the sound was coming from.
After just a few steps, they spotted a massive creature rounding the corner, approaching from a distance. Wang Chao looked on in awe; this Elephant was truly extraordinary. No, it could no longer be called an Elephant—it should be referred to as a "dinosaur"! This Elephant no longer walked on its front legs but instead advanced on two powerful hind legs. Its front limbs had transformed into enormous claws that seemed capable of tearing a person apart with a mere swipe.
Its long trunk swung wildly, occasionally demolishing houses on either side. From its head to its tail, it was covered in large triangular spikes that looked incredibly sharp. At the end of its tail was a massive mace-like appendage resembling a Meteor Hammer, fierce and menacing. It often opened its mouth, revealing sharp teeth capable of shredding a person to pieces.
Standing tall, it reached an astonishing height of seven or eight meters.
"Take cover in the houses on either side!" Wang Chao shouted. "Be ready to suppress it with firepower at all times and stay safe! This Elephant is much stronger than the previous one!"
