The mountain was devoid of corpses and traces, leaving the two to search nearby. At that moment, members of the Black Clothes Society and the guards arrived. According to their reports, there were no signs of any living beings in the houses or on the roads. Wang Chao sighed; it seemed that this monster harbored a deep hatred for humanity, sparing no one in its path. The thought sent chills creeping up from his heels to the back of his neck.
Wang Chao gritted his teeth and said, "In that case, we must find out where this monster is immediately. Otherwise, more humans will die. Squad Leader, take your squad and spread out to search. Let's regroup here in an hour. Remember, that monster is extremely powerful; if you encounter it, run if you can. Leave it to Aivina and me to handle!"
With Wang Chao's command, everyone split into several squads, scattering in different directions to track down the monster. Wang Chao teamed up with Aivina to form a special operations squad and headed in one direction. However, after an hour, they still had no leads. When everyone regrouped, a squad leader approached Wang Chao and whispered, "Captain, our squad discovered a large cave nearby. It's very dark inside, so we didn't dare to go in recklessly. We don't know if the monster is inside."
Wang Chao pondered for a moment before addressing everyone. "Regardless, this cave is worth investigating. If there are any survivors, they might be hiding inside. We must check it out. However, it's pitch black inside, and even if it's a large cave, it won't accommodate all of us at once. If there is a monster inside, we won't have room to maneuver."
"Therefore, Aivina and I will enter the cave first," Wang Chao continued. "You all wait outside and be ready to provide covering fire!"
Following the squad leader's instructions, they arrived at the cave entrance. Looking inside revealed nothing but darkness; visibility extended only about ten meters before it became impossible to see further. After reminding the team to stay vigilant at the entrance, Wang Chao and Aivina stepped into the cave.
In the darkness, Wang Chao discreetly retrieved two Golden Crystals from his Spatial Ring. These crystals were no longer useful for enhancing their strength but could serve as light sources. The yellow glow illuminated their surroundings; although not far-reaching, it allowed them to see clearly within a ten-meter radius as they ventured deeper.
"Look here!" Aivina whispered to Wang Chao. Following her gaze, he spotted a patch of blood on the ground that hadn't been present earlier on their path. Wang Chao rubbed his chin thoughtfully and said, "It seems someone was injured before but wrapped it with bandages or something similar. By the time they reached here, blood had already seeped through. If that's the case, the monster is likely inside!"
Aivina nodded in agreement as they both tightened their grips on their weapons.
They proceeded further into the cave; indeed, the bloodstains increased along their path. Suddenly, from around a bend ahead came a sound resembling stones dropping. Wang Chao and Aivina exchanged glances, understanding each other's thoughts—there was something in this cave; whether it was a monster or a survivor remained uncertain. They dared not act rashly and continued forward cautiously.
Wang Chao whispered, "Be careful; we don't know how this monster senses humans. It lacks facial features and might rely on some unknown sense like many zombies do. In this dark environment, we are at a significant disadvantage against such creatures; if it truly is one of those monsters, we should try to lure it out!"
Aivina nodded as they held onto their crystals and moved closer to the bend ahead. As they approached it, something suddenly burst forth from the darkness with incredible speed, startling both Wang Chao and Aivina. The crystal was instinctively crushed in his grip as Aivina's dagger and Wang Chao's Panlong Blade struck out in response.
The Crystal shattered, plunging the area into a brief darkness. Moments later, a yellow light enveloped the two figures, illuminating the cave once more. It was then that they realized the one who had suddenly charged at them was not a monster, but a living person—a woman with bandages wrapped around her arm, blood seeping through.
She had short hair that made her appear more masculine, with a determined expression as she glared at Wang Chao. One of her hands reached out, gripping a short knife that was longer than an ordinary dagger but much shorter than a typical sword. The blade was only a few centimeters away from Wang Chao's neck, yet it could not descend any further because Wang Chao's left hand had firmly grasped her wrist, rendering her unable to attack.
Looking to the side, Aivina's dagger was also just inches from the woman's throat, but it too could not advance. Wang Chao's blade was blocking Aivina's dagger while its back pressed against the woman's neck. This moment highlighted that although Wang Chao and Aivina possessed equal strength, his reflexes and cognitive abilities were significantly superior.
Had it not been for Wang Chao's quick reaction, not only would he have faced death, but the woman would have met the same fate.
As darkness enveloped them again, Wang Chao retrieved another Crystal from his Spatial Ring—a Silver Crystal—its faint glow illuminating the surroundings. The group had lowered their weapons when Wang Chao asked, "Were you chased here by that monster?" The woman sheathed her knife and glanced at Aivina and Wang Chao before nodding. "That's right. I brought hundreds of people here to escape. The monster didn't follow us initially, but I heard something behind us and sent the others ahead while I hid here. I never expected it would be you!"
Wang Chao nodded in response, about to speak when a familiar voice suddenly echoed through the cave. To his surprise, it was Wang Xiaochuan!
