Wang Chao's peripheral vision caught sight of Da Qiang lying on the ground, seemingly unconscious. He wondered if the monster's Bone Knife had pierced some vital part of Da Qiang's body. Just as Wang Chao was about to approach him, Zhang Fusheng spoke up, "He doesn't have any fatal injuries; he's just fainted. He could wake up at any moment. There are some things that I hope only you and I know. I don't want anyone else to find out."
The coldness in Zhang Fusheng's words made Wang Chao uncomfortable. Although Zhang Fusheng had spoken stiffly before, there had been a hint of arrogance and a touch of shy restraint. Now, however, Wang Chao felt nothing but an overwhelming chill from his words. Sighing inwardly, Wang Chao realized that Zhang Fusheng still hadn't recovered from Jian Xiaoqing's incident. But then he thought, was he still the same person he was four years ago? Probably not.
The old Wang Chao had been selfish and arrogant, willing to sacrifice others without a second thought for his own survival. However, over the past four years, he had witnessed the harsh realities of life and death, seen the fickleness of human nature, and finally understood that some things were more important than life itself. He had found his own beliefs during this time, which included the pure-hearted and kind Zhang Fusheng.
What Wang Chao feared most was that he wanted to become like Zhang Fusheng, yet Zhang Fusheng had transformed into someone he no longer recognized. The sorrow in this realization was something Wang Chao could hardly express to anyone else. After a long silence, he finally spoke up, "Where have you been all this time? I've sent people looking for you for a long time..."
Zhang Fusheng sighed as well and replied, "Where I went isn't important. I know you've been searching for me. In fact, I've returned to the human world before, but I couldn't bear it. Every time I saw those happy people in the Safe Zones, those loving couples, I felt a force urging me to kill them all!"
Zhang Fusheng had always been a devoted person; Wang Chao knew this well. He understood that someone like him would find it hard to move on after being hurt. Tentatively, Wang Chao asked, "You still can't forget about Jian Xiaoqing? After all this time, don't you understand? The responsibility for that incident doesn't lie with you. If I hadn't forced you to make a choice, perhaps that tragedy wouldn't have happened!"
This incident had always been a knot in Wang Chao's heart. Whenever he found himself idle, he would ponder what he would have done if he were in that situation. If Shen Zhitao or Yang Mengying became his enemies, would he really be able to take action against them? Probably not. Thus, Wang Chao couldn't blame Zhang Fusheng for his actions; but who was truly at fault?
In the struggle for dominance among the greatest families in the world and for future control over Huaxia, many fought fiercely against each other. In the end, Huangfu Yan lost his life while Zhang Fusheng lost the woman he loved most. So what had Wang Chao gained or lost in all this? These thoughts swirled chaotically in his mind like a tangled mess with no way to unravel.
"You are my best brother; she is my beloved woman. Why must you be adversaries?" Zhang Fusheng seemed lost in memories of that snowy day over a year ago—a day he could never forget.
"Come back with me!" Wang Chao said as he looked at Zhang Fusheng standing across from him.
But Zhang Fusheng burst into laughter, tears mingling with his smile. By the end of it all, Wang Chao couldn't tell whether Zhang Fusheng was crying or laughing anymore. He only heard Zhang Fusheng say, "I can't go back; I don't want to go back. I have my own things to do. The reason I'm here today isn't to reminisce with you; otherwise, I would have come much earlier. I'm here because there's something in your possession that perhaps you should return to me."
Upon hearing this, Wang Chao felt utterly disheartened. He could clearly remember when Zhang Yunhao handed him the notebook containing the secret techniques of the Zhang Family: "Wang Chao, I'm giving you something!" The tone was so casual as if what he was handing over wasn't the highest secret of the Zhang Family—the Breathing Technique—but rather just a magazine one might find on any street corner.
Wang Chao nodded. He actually knew what this was. He raised his hand and took off the ancient, silver-white ring. Not long ago, he had fought fiercely with Aivina over this ring, and now its owner had returned—Zhang Fusheng was back. Without any hesitation, Wang Chao threw the ancient ring to Zhang Fusheng.
Zhang Fusheng nodded and put the Zhang Family ring back on his finger. He looked it over carefully before saying to Wang Chao, "Although this ring originally belongs to the Zhang Family, I still want to thank you for keeping it safe and returning it to me so readily. Thank you very much. To show my gratitude, I've already taken care of that monster that was going to harm you!"
As he spoke, Zhang Fusheng's gaze swept over the ground where the Worm had been reduced to powder.
Hearing this, a surge of anger rose from the depths of Wang Chao's heart. He was genuinely furious. Wang Chao truly considered Zhang Fusheng a brother, but he never expected Zhang Fusheng would say such things in front of him. Although Wang Chao's hands were already incapacitated, he charged at Zhang Fusheng, slamming his body against him.
This scene was so reminiscent of what had happened more than a year ago when Wang Chao's shoulder had been crippled by the Dragon, rendering him unable to lift his arms. Back then, he had pressed his head against Zhang Fusheng's body because Zhang Fusheng was willing to give up all his power for the one he loved, and Wang Chao had desperately tried to stop him. But this time, the situation was entirely different.
Wang Chao was "attacking" Zhang Fusheng. Indeed, he shouted, "Zhang Fusheng, damn you! Do you think I refused to hand over this ring to anyone because of what? Do you think I established so many Safe Zones and protected so many civilians for no reason? Do you think I wanted to unify Huaxia for nothing?"
"That’s because these were your wishes before!" As he spoke, tears streamed down Wang Chao's face. "That’s because I thought you were dead and wanted to carry on with your part! But now you tell me you don’t care about any of this anymore!"
Zhang Fusheng showed no change in expression; he simply watched Wang Chao as if he were performing a monologue. Then he said, "These are no longer my wishes. I have my own matters to attend to now!" With that, Zhang Fusheng turned his back on Wang Chao and disappeared into the mountains. Wang Chao's teeth trembled as he suddenly recalled what Old Master Zhang had repeatedly told him.
"Even if you can't be brothers with Zhang Fusheng, make sure not to stand against him!"
