"Understood!" Wang Chao said. "Let's find these Mind Controllers one by one!" At that moment, he had already rushed close to the Zombies, but just then, Little Grudge could no longer sense the location of the Mind Controllers. This meant that the four Mind Controllers had completely withdrawn their Mental Power control.
Unlike the powerful Mind Controller they had previously encountered, these four seemed to be at a disadvantage now. Only Little Grudge's solitary Mental Power remained near the capital, which was quite strange. They could have chosen to deal with Little Grudge as before, and it was very likely that Little Grudge could be controlled if not careful. Wang Chao and Little Grudge were essentially gambling, but their opponents did not respond.
"I can't sense any Mental Power at all!" Little Grudge turned around and said. "It seems that someone directly controlled these Zombies, but they are too far away, not in the capital at all; it seems to be in another province. It should be those who united before... The rest of the Mental Powers have completely disappeared; it looks like they are retreating."
Little Wolf stood still, watching as the Zombie Tide slowly retreated. It appeared they were genuinely pulling back. The black monsters, massive Zombies, those spewing Mucus, Tentacle Monsters, and countless ordinary Zombies were all withdrawing. However, the soldiers on the high walls showed no signs of relaxation; they continued to fire their weapons, killing the Zombies that lagged behind.
Wang Chao jumped down from Little Wolf. Since the Zombies were retreating, he did not pursue them. There were simply too many Zombies; even if Wang Chao could kill thousands or tens of thousands of them, he could not handle millions. It felt like a small boat in a vast ocean—now that the tide was receding, all the Zombies were pulling back at once, leaving Wang Chao puzzled.
"I wonder if the one controlling these Zombies is Zhang Fusheng," Wang Chao shook his head and said. "Let's go back and rest; we haven't had a break for two days now. We need to see what the one controlling these Zombies plans to do."
"The Zombies are retreating! The Zombies are retreating!" The soldiers on the high wall shouted. They had been holding their ground for at least a week, and this group of soldiers hadn't had a proper rest for two days and nights. Seeing the retreat of the Zombies brought them joy. Shen Zhiying said, "The Fifth Legion can all pull back to rest; let the First Legion take over guard duty on the walls and prepare for a second wave of Zombie attacks. Open the small gate and let Captain Wang in."
At this moment, however, Wang Chao did not enter the Safe Zone first; instead, he let Little Wolf take Little Grudge inside first. Wang Chao then drew his Panlong Blade from behind and walked over to the giant Lizard nearby. The Lizard, with one leg broken, was still trying to stand up but couldn't manage it due to its massive size and weight.
When Wang Chao approached it, he noticed that this Komodo Dragon was not very aggressive. Its large nostrils flared in front of him as it breathed heavily, emitting a foul odor like a wind tunnel. Its enormous eyes were fixed on Wang Chao, blinking repeatedly while revealing sharp teeth.
Wang Chao slowly placed his hand on its face. The Komodo Dragon showed no intention of attacking him; perhaps it didn't eat anything or simply saw Wang Chao as insignificant like an ant—there was no need to attack him. However, such a massive creature posed a significant danger here. Wang Chao shook his head and plunged his Panlong Blade into the Komodo Dragon's eye like a silver needle. He stabbed it hundreds of times before it finally died—a brutal act necessary to prevent it from standing up again and potentially charging into the Safe Zone.
After finishing this task, Wang Chao entered the Safe Zone where Shen Zhiying was already waiting for him. He sheathed his Panlong Blade and asked, "How's the situation inside the Safe Zone?"
Shen Zhiying rubbed her temples; dark circles had formed around her eyes from lack of sleep. "The situation in the Safe Zone is still okay," she replied. "A week ago when numerous Zombies surged from all directions, we had already set up an ambush outside the Safe Zone, but it wasn't very effective. We gradually retreated back inside."
"In the past few days, dozens of soldiers have sacrificed their lives, and over a hundred have been injured. Fortunately, the injuries are mostly minor. The reserves in the capital are sufficient to support a million people for a year, thanks to the construction efforts over the past few years. However, what worries me is that we don't know how many Zombies there are. Today was just the first wave of retreat; if we end up surrounded for a month like this..."
Wang Chao understood Shen Zhiying's concerns. After all, Zombies didn't need to eat or sleep. Now, there were only two options left. One was to find Zhang Fusheng. Since Zhang Fusheng had a way to control the Zombies, he could redirect them elsewhere or even dispose of them in the sea. However, Wang Chao wasn't confident he could achieve that.
Wang Chao had known for a long time that what Zhang Fusheng needed to do was something that had to be accomplished.
The other option was to wait for Gao Rui to develop such technology. Right now, that was all Wang Chao could rely on. With the notes left behind by Xiaocao regarding Zombie research, Wang Chao believed that day would come soon. After all, creating an entirely new organism from scratch was difficult, but destroying one was much simpler. As long as they could endure these days, victory would surely belong to humanity.
Wang Chao was convinced of this.
"Well, you haven't rested in a few days either. Take today to rest properly; I'll keep watch outside!" Wang Chao said to Shen Zhiying.
Shen Zhiying nodded without saying anything and headed straight into the military camp.
