Night fell quickly, but thankfully it was spring. Unlike the last defense of Jing City, which had taken place in winter, when the number of people who died from the zombie siege was only around ten thousand. Most of those who escaped did so due to the harsh conditions; the cold had caused nearly half of Jing City's population to perish. By the time Wang Chao returned to the Safe Zone, it was in a state of utter devastation.
Reflecting on that time, Wang Chao felt that the current situation could not possibly be worse than before. At least now humanity had fully adapted to the environment. The giant searchlights illuminated the Safe Zone as brightly as day; not even a mosquito could pass by without being clearly visible.
He wondered where the zombies had retreated to—behind those unseen skyscrapers or into the overgrown weeds that were taller than a person. However, these thoughts were no longer Wang Chao's concern. At this moment, he was focused on how to find Zhang Fusheng and stop him. Many soldiers around him were continuously transporting bullets and shells while clearing away the spent casings that had accumulated on top of the high walls.
Wang Chao leaned against the wall and picked up a sniper rifle bullet. It was large, and he recognized it as belonging to a specific type of sniper rifle. Bored, he examined the bullet when suddenly he felt something pass by behind him. It was just a feeling, though. He placed the bullet in his chest pocket and turned around to see if anything was out there.
But there was nothing. The light from the searchlights was very clear, and the other soldiers had not noticed anything unusual; it seemed he was just being paranoid. Just then, however, Wang Chao sensed that a sniper rifle from hundreds of meters away was aiming at him, and then it vanished in an instant. Could it be Zhang Fusheng's people? This thought flashed through Wang Chao's mind.
"Stay alert at your posts! Don't let your guard down!" Wang Chao commanded. "I'm going out for a bit!" He said this without waking Little Wolf, who had come rushing in and hadn’t rested for days. Soon there would be more fierce battles ahead, and he would need Little Wolf's support. The person he was after wasn't far from the Safe Zone; unless Zhang Fusheng came personally, Wang Chao was confident he could catch up with him.
Meanwhile, on top of that building, a figure stood next to a sniper rifle-wielding person. This figure was none other than someone who had been beside Zhang Fusheng earlier. In just half a day’s time, he had already reached near the capital city. The sniper stood up and patted him on the shoulder before saying, "He will arrive soon. My time is limited; you must understand your mission. May the Zhang Family bless you!"
"To serve Young Master is my honor!" replied the sniper. "Vice Captain, I wish you success!"
The Vice Captain merely nodded without saying much more and leaped off the building just like Wang Chao did earlier. From a distance, Wang Chao could only feel that prophetic sensation when a sniper rifle aimed at him but remained unaware that another person stood beside it—Wang Chao did not sense his presence.
At this moment, Wang Chao was running at full speed; he covered several hundred meters in just a few seconds. As he approached his destination, thousands of zombies suddenly surged around him. It seemed these zombies had been waiting here all along; this appeared to be a trap set specifically for Wang Chao. However, what puzzled him was how these few hundred or thousand zombies could possibly deal with him. If that were true, then the one using the sniper rifle must be controlling them!
Realizing this, Wang Chao drew his Panlong Blade and broke through the encirclement of zombies, charging toward the rooftop. But when he pushed open the door to the skyscraper, he found it packed with zombies blocking his way completely—the stairs were filled with them as well. If he wanted to get up there, it would take an enormous amount of time; clearly, this person had been well-prepared.
The densely packed zombies crowded on the stairs saw Wang Chao approaching but did not rush at him; their mission seemed solely to block his ascent and prevent him from reaching higher ground.
Thinking of this, Wang Chao smirked and stepped outside. He looked up at the towering building and charged straight at it. With one foot planted against the wall, a segment of Bone Knife materialized from his ankle and pierced into the surface. Just like that, Wang Chao began to run up the high wall, moving at incredible speed!
The person atop the high-rise had never anticipated that Wang Chao could scale the wall in such a manner. It was easy to go down, but climbing up was as difficult as reaching the heavens. Yet, Wang Chao had done it. The numerous Zombies he controlled were rendered useless, unable to stop Wang Chao for even a minute. Realizing this, the sniper aimed his gun downward and fired.
This individual was also an expert marksman, capable of targeting the rapidly moving Wang Chao in such a short time. However, Wang Chao's strength surpassed his own. Before the bullets could reach him, Wang Chao's hand knife appeared, slicing into the adjacent wall as if he were a spider adept at climbing. In a series of agile movements, he dodged countless incoming bullets.
After about four or five seconds, Wang Chao reached the edge of the high wall. He flipped over onto the rooftop and swung his Bone Knife outward, slicing the sniper's rifle in half. In one swift motion, he lunged forward and grabbed the man by his collar, quickly demanding, "Who are you? Are you one of Zhang Fusheng's people?"
The sniper found himself lifted off the ground by Wang Chao's single hand and replied, "I have no name."
"Your number," Wang Chao pressed on.
"I don't have a number either," the man continued.
Wang Chao positioned his Bone Knife against the man's throat and warned, "You'd better not beat around the bush with me; otherwise—"
"Don't kill me! I'm telling the truth! I have no name, no number; I'm like a nonexistent person!" he exclaimed.
"Alright then, are you working for Zhang Fusheng?" Wang Chao asked.
"That's correct!" the man answered.
