"Ah, how heartwarming!" In the midst of this joyful atmosphere, a jarring voice suddenly broke through. Everyone turned to see five delinquents, all in their twenties. They were blocking the entrance of the orphanage, and the leader was a scruffy-looking man with long yellow hair, chewing on a piece of grass.
At that moment, a bolder boy shouted at the five of them, "Hey, who are you?"
"We?" The leader glanced over the people in the orphanage before fixing his gaze on Annie. "Well, we're here for her."
Almost everyone turned to look at Annie, except for Augus, who seemed to be deep in thought. Annie pointed to herself in confusion and asked, "Me? Do we know each other?"
"Hahaha." The leader laughed before his expression hardened. "You'll get to know us soon enough. We are the Five Tigers around here, you know?"
"What?" The children knew that the Five Tigers were the most dangerous group in this slum. They were not just delinquents; they were outright thugs with a reputation for being ruthless. The Five Tigers were self-proclaimed leaders under Arnold's command. During these chaotic times, their actions went largely unchecked, and they only grew bolder.
Auntie frowned and pushed through the circle of children to face the Five Tigers. Just as she was about to speak, Arnold ignored everyone else and stepped up to Annie. He smirked and asked, "You have something we want. If you hand it over, we won't let you or anyone else here get hurt. Understand?"
Annie nodded nervously and asked, "What do you want?"
"Gold." Arnold spat out the word. Hearing this, Augus thought to himself: Just as I suspected.
"What?" Annie's eyes widened in shock as she looked at Arnold.
"Gold! Are you deaf?" Arnold sneered.
"I don't have any," Annie said, shaking her head in fear.
"I want gold! Give it to me now!" Arnold impatiently shoved Annie. Augus quickly caught her before she could fall and asked with concern, "Are you okay? Did you get hurt?"
"No," Annie shook her head slightly.
"That's good." Augus nodded and helped Annie to the side before turning angrily to Arnold and shouting, "Hey! How can you treat her like this? She said she doesn't have any gold! What more do you want?"
"What more..." Before Arnold could finish his sentence, one of the children suddenly shouted, "He's bullying Sister Annie! He's a bad guy! We need to protect Sister Annie!"
"Protect Sister Annie!" the other children echoed. Some girls began to cry out loud: "Waaah... Bad guy, don't bully Sister Annie!"
"Hey, what are you all trying to do?" Arnold shouted as he saw a group of kids rushing in, some boys and some girls.
"Beat the bad guys, protect Sister Annie! Beat the bad guys, protect Sister Annie!" The children's voices grew louder and more determined.
Arnold felt a bit flustered and quickly called out to the others, "Hey, what are you standing there for? Watching a show? Come help me out! Ah!" Arnold cried out in pain as a girl bit his thigh. He grabbed the child by the shoulders and threw her away with force.
"Ah." Annie rushed over to where the girl had landed, helping her up and checking her over with concern. "Are you okay? Anna, are you hurt?"
"I'm fine, just feeling a bit sore on my back," Anna said with a smile, shaking her head. "Sister, how about you? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, really. I'm doing great," Annie replied with a smile. She then turned to look at the children, who were still charging forward without hesitation. Annie also noticed Oniwife and Augus were tangled up with a few troublemakers. Her eyes began to well up with tears as she shouted to the kids, "Everyone, please stop! I'm okay, really!" With that, she burst into tears.
"Stop!" At that moment, Annie heard a voice she recognized well. Everyone froze at the sound of those two words and turned towards the entrance. A young man in his twenties stood at the door of the orphanage.
Annie looked at him and thought: Isn't he supposed to be recovering from his injuries? How did he end up here?
Arnold was the first to react. He pushed aside Augus and a few kids and walked straight toward the man at the door. The other troublemakers also caught on and gradually surrounded him. Seeing Sima Chuan surrounded by them made Annie anxious, and she felt guilty inside.
Arnold confronted Sima Chuan, saying, "So you want to meddle in our business?"
"No," Sima Chuan replied expressionlessly, then pointed at Annie. "The gold bars she has are from me; you can ask me for them."
"Is that true? If you're lying, you'll find out what happens," Arnold threatened as he turned to Annie.
"He..." Annie hesitated but felt reassured when she saw Sima Chuan nodding. For some reason, just seeing him made her feel that nothing dangerous would happen. So she blurted out, "The gold bars are from him." After saying that, her expression changed and she quickly covered her mouth.
Arnold ignored Annie and faced Sima Chuan again, threatening him, "Since you have gold bars, hand them over quickly; we need to go eat. If you don't give them to me, you'll see what happens."
"I do have gold bars," Sima Chuan paused for a moment, looking at Arnold with a hint of amusement in his eyes. "But I'm just not planning to give them to you."
Arnold was so angry he nearly jumped up. He shouted, "You little brat, you're messing with me!"
Sima Chuan scoffed and said, "Of course I'm messing with you."
"What are you?" Arnold's eyes turned red with anger as he swung his fist directly at Sima Chuan. Annie and some of the other children couldn't bear to watch and closed their eyes.
Just as Arnold's fist was about to hit Sima Chuan, Sima Chuan suddenly reached out and grabbed Arnold's fist. With a gentle flick, he sent Arnold flying back several dozen meters, leaving him motionless. Then, Sima Chuan lightly kicked, sending the thug next to him crashing into a wall a few meters away. With just a simple move, Sima Chuan took down the remaining thugs.
"Wow..." Some boys clapped after witnessing Sima Chuan's performance.
"What happened?" Annie gradually opened her eyes, looking curiously at the children. She then shifted her gaze to the entrance and saw Sima Chuan standing there alone, while the five so-called Five Tigers had disappeared.
"Sister, that big brother is amazing! He scared those bad guys away in an instant," Anna said with a grin, hugging Annie's leg.
"Huh? You mean he single-handedly drove those bad guys away?" Annie looked at Anna in confusion and then glanced at Sima Chuan.
"Yes! He's really impressive," Anna said happily, spinning around Annie.
Sima Chuan smiled as he approached Annie and asked, "Boss, aren't you in charge of this area? Didn't you say no one would dare to mess with me?"
"Um, well, I just thought I'd give you a chance to show off since I saw you come. I'm very satisfied with your performance; from now on, you'll be my official little brother," Annie quickly changed the subject, feeling a bit guilty. "By the way, how come you're out and about with such serious injuries?"
Sima Chuan only wanted to tease Annie. Seeing her change the topic, he decided not to press further. He felt quite touched by her concern and replied, "Thanks for your concern, Boss. I'm fine now; I just felt a bit bored staying indoors, so I came out for a stroll."
