“Cough, cough... The update is so quick.” Augus coughed lightly to remind Annie. She turned to him with a puzzled look, and Augus gave her another knowing glance. At that moment, Annie recalled what Augus had said to her earlier, and she hurriedly turned to Sima Chuan, forcing an awkward smile as she asked, “Sima Chuan, could you share your situation with us? For example, how did you get injured?”
Annie's demeanor was quite unnatural, but Sima Chuan paid no mind to it. He had already prepared a response for her question. His expression shifted dramatically, displaying a mix of sorrow and anger. “I used to live in a wealthy family. Just last night, a group of Militants suddenly stormed into my home. Without saying a word, they killed and injured my family members and looted everything of value. My parents initially tried to resist, but those who fought back were killed; blood was everywhere. I can never forget that scene. My father feared for my safety, so he handed me several gold bars at the first opportunity and urged me to escape. At first, I refused, but my parents insisted that they would come for me once it was safe. I couldn’t go against their wishes and had no choice but to flee alone.
“This morning, when I returned, my house was engulfed in flames. I knew something had happened to my parents. I saw the last of the Militants and recklessly killed him. However, I didn’t realize that he was the brother of their leader. They quickly discovered me and chased after me relentlessly. I ran for my life but ended up getting injured. Eventually, with help from others, I escaped from my town and kept moving until I collapsed from exhaustion in that place.”
“Ah.” Augus sighed; there was nothing else he could do but sigh since such events were not uncommon.
“Sima Chuan, um...” Annie spoke hesitantly.
“What is it?” Sima Chuan asked in a subdued tone.
“About that gold bar—was it your father’s last gift to you?”
“Yes,” Sima Chuan sighed again.
“Then... I...” Annie began but was interrupted by Sima Chuan.
“It’s fine; that was my contribution fee,” he said.
“I’m really sorry, Sima Chuan. I didn’t expect something like this would happen to you,” Annie said, lowering her head in remorse.
“It’s okay,” Sima Chuan waved his hand dismissively. “It’s all in the past now.”
At that moment, Auntie approached and patted Sima Chuan on the shoulder with sincerity in her eyes. “Sima Chuan, can I just call you Chuan? Is that alright?” After he nodded, Auntie continued, “I can see you’re a strong kid. You’ve probably started to forget those past events by now. Although we may not be as wealthy as your family was, you can still feel love and friendship here. If you don’t mind, why not stay here? Consider this your second home.”
“Big Brother, please agree!”
“Yes, Big Brother! You should stay!”
“Big Brother…”
Just as Sima Chuan was about to agree, a group of children rushed over, all wanting him to stay.
Looking at the crowd of kids, Sima Chuan felt an overwhelming sense of joy. He nodded heavily and said, "Alright, I'll stay and treat this place as my second home."
"Yay! That's great!" Some of the children jumped up in excitement upon hearing Sima Chuan's agreement. They surrounded him, chattering away.
"Big Brother, what were those moves you used to defeat the bad guy earlier?"
"Big Brother, are you really that amazing?" asked a girl.
"Can you teach us a few moves, Big Brother?"
"Yeah, Big Brother! If we learn them, we won't need you to fight the bad guys anymore."
"It would be awesome if I could defeat the bad guys too."
"Big Brother, let me tell you a secret—some girls were looking at you with stars in their eyes just now," whispered a chubby boy with a somewhat awkward appearance beside Sima Chuan.
"Big Brother..."
Annie couldn't stand it any longer. She pushed through the crowd of kids and shouted at them, "Hey! What are you doing? This is my brother! If you want him to do something, you need my permission first!"
The group of kids immediately quieted down upon hearing Annie's voice, especially the boys who idolized Sima Chuan; in their eyes, Annie was quite fierce.
"Um," Sima Chuan added, "I'm Annie's older brother. If you want me to do something, you'll have to go through her first. But there are some things we can work on together, like teaching you some cool moves when I have time."
At first, the children felt disappointed by Sima Chuan's words, but they quickly became excited when they heard what came next.
Watching the excitement of the group of boys, Annie could only shake her head and sigh.
"By the way, Sima Chuan, where are you going to stay now?" Auntie asked, stroking his beard.
At Auntie's question, Sima Chuan instinctively glanced in Annie's direction. Noticing Sima Chuan's gaze, Annie's face flushed, and she shouted at him, "What are you looking at? I'm asking you!"
Seeing their interaction, Augus teased, "Looks like Sima Chuan has already been tamed by Annie so quickly." Oniwife chuckled from the side.
Annie shot Augus a glare and said, "Uncle Augus, do you believe that by dinner time tonight, your meal might have some issues?"
Upon hearing Annie's words, Augus broke into a cold sweat and waved his hands repeatedly. "No, I can't take it anymore!"
"That's for the best," Annie said fiercely before turning to Sima Chuan. "Sima Chuan, just choose where you want to stay; don't listen to their nonsense."
Just as Sima Chuan was about to speak, Augus quickly chimed in loudly, "Let's let the kids decide where Sima Chuan will live." He then turned to the children and asked, "Kids, where do you want your big brother Sima Chuan to stay? Think carefully now." Augus finished with a playful smile, showing no sense of maturity as an uncle.
"I want Big Brother to stay here with us," one boy said.
"Yeah, stay here," another boy agreed. Just as he finished speaking, another boy next to him knocked on his head and asked with an expression of exasperation, "Are you stupid?"
"What’s wrong?" the boy asked in confusion.
"Think about it! If Big Brother stays with Sister Annie, we won't have to see Sister Annie's fierce face anymore. Plus, Big Brother will have time to teach us some awesome moves," the other boy explained.
"That does make sense," the first boy said with a dazed expression.
"Of course it does!" The other boy shouted loudly after finishing his explanation: "Big Brother should live with Sister Annie!"
"Big Brother and Sister Annie live together," the boy shouted again, still a bit confused.
Soon, the voices of "Big Brother and Sister Annie live together" grew louder.
Augus seemed pleased with this outcome and gave Annie a sly smile. "What do you think, Annie? Let's go along with what the kids decided."
"Hmph." Annie huffed, though she was secretly a bit happy. Still, she put on an angry face and approached the children. "Aren't you the ones who wanted Sima Chuan and me to live together? If that's the case, I won't let him teach you those amazing techniques anymore."
Upon hearing this, the children panicked. "Sister Annie, please don't! We know we were wrong."
Most of the kids were just trying to joke around with Annie. However, she continued to feign anger and shouted at them, "Too late!" Then she grabbed Sima Chuan and headed outside.
Once they saw Annie and Sima Chuan walking away, the boys looked dejected. Lady Oni couldn't bear to see them like this, so she said to the children, "Don't worry, your Sister Annie is just joking with you. She's out shopping with Big Brother now, and they'll be back for dinner tonight."
"Really? Yay!" the boys asked eagerly.
"Of course it's true! Would I lie to you?" Mrs. Oni said with a loving smile.
"Yay! That's great!" The orphanage was once again filled with joyful laughter.
