"Are you hurt?" Luo Guohui emerged, carrying a silver metal cylinder that was half his height. Upon seeing the wound on Yang Xiaoyou's arm, inflicted by Hank's thrown dagger, his expression grew serious.
"I'm just hungry. I hadn't eaten anything, and being alone made it worse. When I went to find something to eat, someone bumped into me and ended up stabbing me," Yang Xiaoyou rolled his eyes and replied weakly. Whether the other person believed him or not was irrelevant; Luo Guohui had already completed his mission, and anything else was beyond his concern. As long as he didn't have to hold onto anything, he figured he could just turn a blind eye.
Luo Guohui gave him a long look but didn't press further. He pulled out two compressed biscuits from his pocket and tossed them over. "Eat if you're hungry."
Grabbing a cup that once belonged to a Corpse from the table, Yang Xiaoyou swallowed the biscuits and licked his lips before extending his hand toward Luo Guohui again. "Is there more?"
Watching the Hungry Ghost reincarnated as a Foodie, Luo Guohui's lips twitched slightly as he pulled out three more biscuits. "Finish these quickly. We need to keep quiet on the way. No matter what, you've helped me a lot this time, and I'll ensure you get out of the city safely."
"How do we get out?" Ignoring the creature in his pocket that was eagerly watching the biscuits, Yang Xiaoyou stuffed the last piece in and asked vaguely.
"By helicopter. Let's go." Despite carrying the heavy-looking silver cylinder, Luo Guohui showed no signs of strain.
"A helicopter? So there are other people involved? Can you guarantee they won't make things difficult for me like you did?" Yang Xiaoyou followed behind Luo Guohui, continuing to question him.
In response to this, Luo Guohui remained silent.
"That means no, right?" Yang Xiaoyou's expression turned pale as the effects of the Antibody continued to take hold within him.
Then Yang Xiaoyou continued, "Given that the Chinese Exclusion Act hasn't been repealed yet, even your own status might be problematic. It won't be easy to protect me."
"Humanity cannot remain stagnant forever; the last Racial Exclusion Act in the United States must be abolished!" A glimmer of determination flashed in Luo Guohui's eyes as he tightened his grip on the silver cylinder.
Seeing his expression, Yang Xiaoyou felt a sense of admiration rising within him. This admiration was unrelated to their positions; Luo Guohui dedicated his life to improving the status of Chinese Americans and devoted everything to his ideals.
The last Racial Exclusion Act in America was ultimately abolished by the soon-to-be First Black President.
At the same time, he had a complicated expression as he spoke to Yang Xiaoyou, "It seems you never considered using me to leave, did you?"
"No, I did think about it, but I gave up before coming here. Not only because I was worried about being silenced by your 'companions,' but also because I wasn't confident about some other fellows in the city," Yang Xiaoyou said with a smile, pressing on his helmet.
Hearing Yang Xiaoyou's words, Luo Guohui nodded. He had a good impression of this somewhat inexperienced youth, who was a few years younger than himself. It wasn't just because the other had helped him complete his mission; it was also that at such a time, he still considered his companions, which resonated well with him.
As for what the other had concealed from him, it didn't matter much. At most, he had discovered something unusual about the laboratory and might have taken some data. That was irrelevant to him; it could be seen as a form of compensation for Yang Xiaoyou. The secrecy of his operation and the coincidences that occurred along the way made it impossible for anyone to have specifically plotted against him.
"Some materials are quite sensitive. I hope you won't sell them casually; if they fall into the hands of terrorist forces, it could lead to considerable trouble. This trouble wouldn't just be directed at the outside world; obtaining more information could also pose significant risks for you personally. The best handling party would be the national government." After glancing at Yang Xiaoyou, Luo Guohui seemed to be talking to himself.
Even if Luo Guohui had a rich imagination, he would never have thought that this youth, whom he believed had enough understanding of action, could obtain genuine source viruses and antibodies in this unfamiliar laboratory. To him, collecting even a bit of surrounding residual data would have been impressive.
With Luo Guohui's monstrous presence leading the way, their journey out of Overcast Laboratory was relatively smooth.
The other factions present in the laboratory helped clean up many corpses. Aside from the one encounter Yang Xiaoyou faced himself, they successfully avoided others while acting together with Luo Guohui.
Moreover, Yang Xiaoyou understood that although the mainframe was partially shut down and the cold storage had ceased operations, those within were still in a thawing state. At least for now, they posed no threat. As for the naturally generated threats from virus infections outside, they required a much longer time cycle than corpses.
For now, what worried the entire city most were those corpses that moved like locusts but followed certain patterns of avoidance.
Stepping out of Umbrella Building and raising his hand to shield himself from the glaring sunlight that pierced through his umbrella, Yang Xiaoyou squinted his eyes. This operation had gone relatively smoothly under Luo Guohui's escort. However, it was now time for them to part ways. Although the road ahead would be arduous, he knew he had to change that trajectory.
"Trust me, your talent is destined to shine on the battlefield, to radiate your own brilliance. The army is your ultimate home; do not waste this gift." Stepping out of the Umbrella Building and gazing at the corpses nearby that seemed to have been cleaned up once again, Luo Guohui turned to look seriously into Yang Xiaoyou's eyes.
"Maybe, but I just hope I don't end up facing someone like you, ha ha," Yang Xiaoyou replied in a half-joking tone.
"I hope so too. In fact, I wish you could stay; the Chinese Exclusion Act must be repealed!" Luo Guohui extended his hand to Yang Xiaoyou, his expression quite sincere.
"Sorry, I don't have such lofty ideals and I don't want to bear that kind of pressure. I don't want to die unrecognized or misunderstood, nor do I want to be cursed by those I helped after my death," Yang Xiaoyou said, his expression slightly complex, reflecting what he foresaw for Luo Guohui's future.
"For the sake of one's ideals, one always has to give up something. I probably won't need these anymore; take them. It's impossible to pass through Century Bridge out of the city. To prevent the spread of the virus, the stationed military has the authority to open fire.
If we disregard helicopters, your only option for leaving with your companions is by sea. Just make sure not to get intercepted along the way. If you can successfully reach Honolulu and create some noise to draw attention to yourselves, then under public pressure and that from the Chinese Government, safety shouldn't be too much of a concern." After handing over his remaining two pistol magazines to Yang Xiaoyou, Luo Guohui offered a few more words of advice before turning away without looking back.
Watching that familiar yet strange figure fade into the distance, Yang Xiaoyou sighed lightly and resolutely headed in the opposite direction; he knew that his path was his own choice.
"I'm so hungry; am I really just a foodie?" Listening to his stomach protest while hiding behind an SUV that had crashed onto the sidewalk, Yang Xiaoyou's eyes lit up at the sight of a trendy supermarket ahead.
Ordinary people could get by with two or three compressed biscuits for a meal, but after taking five from Luo Guohui, he still felt a gnawing hunger that made his stomach cramp—a real headache for him.
After receiving the antibody injection, although he didn't experience the sudden hunger pangs associated with a viral infection, his body continued to heat up and tremble involuntarily. The consumption was significant and also more prolonged and stable. Along the way, Yang Xiaoyou had used Cognitive Acceleration several times.
Since the antibody injection, he had noticed that he could now actively control Cognitive Acceleration at one times speed. As for physical strength limitations, if he pushed himself now, he could probably reach about 40%, and it was still steadily improving.
The subsequent rate of improvement had slowed down considerably; however, it was estimated that once his body's transformation was complete, it could reach 60% to 70%. The rest would depend on training.
At present, even if it’s just 40%, if I were to push myself, I would likely end up with muscle strains or cramps. After all, my body is still not trained enough.
I remember being able to consistently use 50% of my strength without straining my body. When I went all out, I could surpass my physical limits and reach 10%. However, back then, every step came with a risk of injury; once I activated that power, fractures were a real possibility, and the strain on my internal organs was the most critical issue.
The effects were quite evident. Once strength and speed reached their limits, every additional 10% represented a qualitative leap. It wasn’t as simple as just adding one plus one. A sprinter who could run 100 meters in ten seconds was an absolute champion, while someone who took eleven seconds was merely an average athlete—the difference was staggering.
“Ah, don’t aim too high. What I have now is already quite good; progress takes time,” Yang Xiaoyou reflected. But just thinking about food made his mouth water, leaving him feeling somewhat helpless.
In his memories, he recalled that to meet his enormous daily energy consumption, his appetite was quite terrifying. Coupled with the drastic changes in his body, his digestive capacity was extraordinarily high.
One ability that came with such an appetite was his body’s terrifying energy storage capability. Although he appeared somewhat frail on the surface, as long as he maintained a normal diet, he could endure special circumstances by tightening his pores and regulating his body temperature. He could go a month without water and still unleash peak combat power several times.
Unfortunately, he hadn’t stored enough energy yet.
“Ah! I can’t take it anymore! The corpses won’t stop me!” He had initially planned to observe the situation inside the supermarket. After all, this place was different from the gun shop; there wasn’t much outside to attract the corpses, making it far more likely for them to appear inside.
However, due to the cramping in his stomach, Yang Xiaoyou had no choice but to set off early; otherwise, he might faint from hunger on the roadside.
