“Arms business, huh? I never thought I could become a businessman too.” Carrying Elder, Noah took a moment to digest the decision made by his companion.
For Mercenaries, some enjoy this life of blood and fire, while others are driven by necessity, or perhaps a combination of both. After experiencing a near-death situation where only two members remained from his original Mercenary team, even the thick-skinned Noah felt a faint weariness towards his former life.
Aside from fighting, Noah didn’t understand what else he was capable of. Now that his companion had decided to temporarily follow someone named ‘Yi’ into the world of Arms, a flicker of freshness appeared in Noah’s heart.
He had great faith in his companion’s judgment; usually, it was him who made the decisions. Aside from the unexpected start of this operation, they had rarely made mistakes. Since his companion chose to follow this mysterious fellow, he would go along with it.
After all, their lives had been saved by each other, and even in the worst-case scenario, they would just return their lives to one another. Living one more day was a gain.
“What’s our next move, Aser?” Nobunaga Hideyoshi adjusted his military crossbow, his cool demeanor making it hard to see him as just another man.
“Oh, do you have any suggestions?” Stepping out of the apartment and looking at the bloody chaos on the street, Yang Xiaoyou asked with interest.
Due to his limited interactions and understanding of the two, he initially thought they were just impulsive brutes. However, after spending time with them, he realized that Nobunaga Hideyoshi performed quite well in other aspects; his abilities were well-rounded.
Moreover, this rational fellow had sought revenge after learning about Luo Guohui’s murder, which spoke volumes about his character. Initially, Yang Xiaoyou believed their success was merely due to luck, but now it seemed that their plans were also significantly influenced by this fellow’s strategies.
Given this, it was essential to fully utilize the other’s talents; at the very least, he shouldn’t regress into merely an obedient machine.
“From what we’ve observed, the city’s sewage system is highly secure. Even if we occasionally encounter a Zombie, we can shoot without much concern. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the routes, we’ll need to obtain a layout of the sewage system from the water authority first,” Nobunaga Hideyoshi stated without hesitation.
Although he had only agreed to ‘give it a try,’ he had completely immersed himself in his role and spoke as if he were one of the subordinates.
“Indeed, my original plan was to use the city’s sewer system to escape. However, given how complex the entire sewer environment is, even if we get the structural map from the water authority, it will take considerable time.
That said, I know there’s an area in Kapa City where the sewer is completely **ed out. From there, we should be able to reach the estuary directly, avoiding the hassle of navigating underground and reducing the risk of getting lost,” Yang Xiaoyou nodded in agreement.
“Where?” Noah couldn’t help but interject.
“**The prison.” The answer came from Elder Josen, who was slung over Noah’s shoulder. His indifferent tone made it seem somewhat cheeky.
“It really is a shame that he died here.” After glancing at that zombie-like fellow, Yang Xiaoyou couldn’t help but think.
Besides being one of the most convenient exits from the city, another important reason for choosing **the prison was that survivors from both Yuying Middle School and Royal Academy of Basic Studies had used this route to escape. Not only was safety ensured, but he could also keep an eye on Qi Menglu that Girl nearby.
After all, when subtle changes began occurring in their trajectory, even though she managed to leave safely in his memories, Yang Xiaoyou still felt uneasy. By following her closely, he could at least ensure that if she were ever scratched by a Corpse, he could provide an extra layer of insurance with an Antibody.
As for the others, it was none of his concern. For safety's sake, this identity could not be exposed to them. In the future, he could always find some excuse about being rescued by someone else.
There were not many people in this world who truly cared about his life or death.
A man suddenly yanked open the car door, ready to scream for help. Just as he opened his mouth, a muffled sound echoed, and a bullet pierced through his head, splattering red and white everywhere.
A team of seven figures clad in white Protective Suits swiftly crossed the street littered with Corpses.
The Corpses, drawn by the initial sound, completely ignored the seven rapidly moving figures, as if they were their own kind, merely turning to move toward the fresh body.
"The Eleventh Squad has gone silent. The main brain's pursuit mission has failed. Captain, what should we do next?" Among the swiftly moving Seven Shadows, the last figure used an internal communication device in his helmet to inquire of the captain in the middle.
"I have received instructions. The main brain is a compromised asset. Our current target is to retrieve the Virus Sample." A man in a Protective Suit in the center pulled out a liquid crystal screen and looked at the display before issuing orders. He then turned and moved toward a marked point on the screen.
"Doctor, what's that red light flashing at your waist?" Noah, who was carrying Elder behind him, tilted his head to look at the flickering light on Elder's waist and curiously asked.
"Oh, this? It's just a Signal detection device. It's normal for it to flicker abnormally under such high-intensity electronic interference. Wait, who among you is carrying a high-intensity Signal locator?" Elder began to pull out a strange orb casually but soon seemed to notice something was off with the flickering pattern and asked curiously.
Hearing Elder's words, Yang Xiaoyou's expression changed instantly. He quickly took out two sets of viruses and Antibodies from his waist bag. Looking at the red light flashing on Elder's accessory, his heart sank.
In the end, he still lacked the vigilance from his previous life. After gaining such an advantage, he had let greed cloud his judgment. He never expected that even amidst citywide communication interference, such a powerful locating Signal could still be triggered.
Yang Xiaoyou also hadn't anticipated that they would pursue the source of the virus. After all, they should have already taken samples of each virus out of the city. Now it seemed that if there wasn't an internal issue within their company, these viruses were likely intended for the U.S. government as a compromise and were deliberately left behind. The tracking was only initiated after they were taken away by 'unrelated parties' and pursued by Janitor.
"Hehe, looks like we're in trouble. There wasn't any locating Signal at first; this should be an overpowered state of a Signal locating system. Although its duration will be greatly shortened, it can still function in this interference environment." Elder Josen said nonchalantly. When it came to electronic information aspects, he was undoubtedly a top authority and immediately recognized the problem.
"Is there no way to resolve it?" Yang Xiaoyou asked in a low voice.
"Why resolve it? These instinct-driven fellows can't possibly utilize this thing; it's humans who are tracking you. Whoever can rescue me is all the same in my eyes unless you threaten me." Elder replied calmly, seemingly retaliating against Yang Xiaoyou's earlier suggestion that he might abandon him when necessary; however, his last statement sounded rather spineless.
"Heh, why would I threaten you? But I need to tell you that what I have here is precisely the source of the virus causing our current situation. The one tracking us is likely responsible for this city's viral outbreak." After weighing his options in his mind in a flash, Yang Xiaoyou did not hide his thoughts anymore. Ultimately, he intended to sell both the virus and Antibodies; to him, there was no difference between selling them to the U.S. government or the Chinese government.
He recalled that after the outbreak of the virus and under global pressure, America had shared part of its research on H Virus and Vaccine results.
Now letting Elder Josen know was undoubtedly a way to take action; Lockheed Martin was closely linked with the U.S. government and had significant financial resources. Whether they purchased through intermediaries or wanted to keep some for themselves was not an issue.
As for whether they would play dirty and label him as a Terrorist to seize control of the virus source—Yang Xiaoyou didn't care much about that either. His asking price wouldn't be too exorbitant; given that he had no solid backing, he couldn't demand too high regardless of whom he sold it to. They had no reason to do anything that would upset Elder over such trivial benefits.
Taking a step back, even if the other party truly wanted to play tricks in secret, Yang Xiaoyou had ways to make them drink a bitter cup. At worst, she could simply crush the virus and give them a taste of it. The h-Eight virus that had erupted in the city was highly contagious; otherwise, it wouldn't have caused such a commotion. Moreover, after the transaction was completed, she could promise to send them some related virus data. The years spent in the laboratory as a white mouse were not wasted.
"Hand it over." Upon hearing the type of solution Yang Xiaoyou was producing from the test tube, even the carefree Elder couldn't hide his shock, his face contorting into an expression of constipation as he reached out his hand.
"Well, this positioning chip has greatly exceeded its limits. Originally, it might have been challenging without the necessary equipment, but now with this last straw, it should be no problem." He took the test tubes one by one, putting on a monocle to observe for a while before speaking calmly. He then pulled out a toolkit.
At that moment, he seemed to transform completely.
"The place where the signal disappeared is right here. I didn't expect it to last for such a short time." Seven Shadows, resembling a white ghost, swiftly darted into a restaurant. The figure that seemed to be the leader looked at the tightly closed kitchen door in front of him and made a gesture.
However, at the instant they broke down the door, an electric spark mechanism triggered by the door panel caused the entire gas-filled kitchen to explode. The last scene in the eyes of those seven was that blinding tongue of flame.
The powerful fire and shockwave shattered the restaurant's glass and blasted outward, sending several wandering corpses outside flying from the impact.
Hearing the massive noise coming from behind them, Noah whistled and said, "Cool! That should help us attract a lot of zombies' attention. We might need to thank them."
"Target: Prison. Let's move." After dealing with their pursuers behind them, Yang Xiaoyou adjusted her helmet.
