The hot and humid air carried a thick stench of blood and decay, and even the sea breeze could not disperse this nauseating odor.
Standing on the inner side of a streetlight's advertisement board, with one hand resting against the pole to block most of the view from the street, Yang Xiaoyou quietly scanned the distribution of Corpses around.
Ahead, the prison's structure was already visible, but the dense gathering of Corpses surrounding it made it impossible to approach. It seemed as if they understood that there was something delicious inside the prison.
In front of the metal gate, the Corpses continued to scratch and bang against it, producing a piercing sound.
This commotion had even caused the few Corpses wandering nearby to dwindle down to just a couple of cats.
"Boss, what should we do now? Even an armored vehicle might get overturned. How did so many Zombies end up here?" Noah asked Yang Xiaoyou above, his nerves tingling from the low growls that echoed in the distance due to their overwhelming numbers.
"What kind of fools treated this place as a stronghold for defensive operations?" Yang Xiaoyou stepped forward lightly and jumped down from the advertisement board, sounding somewhat irritated.
As for who those fools were, he had a good idea: either the police from Kapa City or the Hawaiian U.S. Military Garrison that had entered the city for rescue operations.
In such a densely populated city, clearing out Corpses would only lead to more appearing; it was inevitable. If it weren't for the sturdy walls and secure gates of the prison, they might have already been overwhelmed by the Horde pressing forward without fear.
Yang Xiaoyou had already seen many Corpses in the front row crushed into meat paste by their companions pushing from behind.
"If we're willing to take some risks, there might still be a way," he said, looking at an advertisement building about a street's width away from the prison. He glanced at Nobunaga Hideyoshi's military crossbow and pondered for a moment.
By visual estimation, the advertisement building was about thirty meters away from the main structure of the prison and stood over ten meters taller. Using special arrows with hooks at their ends from the military crossbow, it wouldn't be difficult to shoot over a bundle of Climbing Rope he had found.
However,
Half an hour later, after cleaning up a few stray Corpses, they reached the rooftop of that advertisement building. Seeing that Nobunaga Hideyoshi had skillfully set up the Climbing Rope, Yang Xiaoyou felt a bit frustrated.
At this point, Nobunaga Hideyoshi had successfully brought over a bag and was checking for safety on that rooftop while Noah tied an old wire around Elder and was in the process of sliding over.
Watching Noah effortlessly grab a piece of rag to use as gloves while sliding over with someone else made Yang Xiaoyou swallow hard.
In his memory, he had experienced similar situations countless times, but this was truly his first. The deafening roar of the Corpse below and the swaying ropes, affected by the sea breeze, added to the pressure he felt.
Glancing at the dense mass of Corpses below and then at Noah, who had already arrived at the station, Yang Xiaoyou gritted his teeth and picked up a damp rag to wrap around his hand, preventing burns from friction. With a determined push, he slid down.
In terms of pure physical attributes, excluding Cognitive Acceleration and Limit Release, Yang Xiaoyou was just slightly above the average adult level. While Limit Release could indeed enhance his physical capabilities for a short time, his endurance aspects were quite poor; he could manage sudden explosive attacks but was not suited for prolonged hanging.
Moreover, he couldn't afford to appear too clumsy in front of Noah and the others.
Just as Yang Xiaoyou prayed not to embarrass himself and lose the little credibility he had just built up, an overwhelming sense of panic suddenly surged in his heart, as if something terrible was about to happen.
Instinctively pushing his body to its current limits, he pulled hard with both hands and swung his legs forward to quickly latch onto the Climbing Rope, sticking himself to it.
Just as he managed to suppress the muscle spasms and executed this extreme maneuver, a sharp gunshot rang out. The bullet whizzed past Yang Xiaoyou, and the flash from the gun revealed the position of the shooter—a window in the Prison Building.
By the time Yang Xiaoyou pinpointed the shooter's location, the pale-faced man had already fired a second shot. Fortunately, due to the recoil from the first shot, his aim was significantly off again, missing Yang Xiaoyou once more.
"Looking for death!" Yang Xiaoyou's heart ignited with a surge of anger at being shot at for no reason. Suppressing the soreness and spasms in his muscles, he pushed with his legs, released his grip on the rope, and swung backward. With another forceful motion from his waist, he arched his head back while drawing his handgun from his waist.
As he grasped the gun, everything around him seemed to slow down again; every detail became strikingly clear. He raised his hand just as the shooter prepared to fire a third shot and pulled his own trigger.
"Thud."
"Clang."
Two sounds echoed; blood erupted from the ambusher's head as he fell. In a cruel twist of fate, however, the last bullet he fired struck the Climbing Rope behind Yang Xiaoyou.
The resilient rope did not snap immediately, but it was fraying dangerously thin and seemed unlikely to hold much longer. At that moment, Yang Xiaoyou was still at least ten meters away from the opposite side.
Using Cognitive Acceleration to quickly assess his options, he realized that no matter what method he employed now, reaching the rooftop directly was impossible. However, there was one silver lining: about ten meters down from the rooftop of the building ahead was a window.
If he could use the momentum from swinging past to crash through that window, at least he wouldn’t fall into the Horde below.
"Two meters ten centimeters to eleven meters, eighty centimeters high, fifty centimeters wide, and I need to move forward one body length." In this life-or-death moment, Yang Xiaoyou was like a precision calculator, quickly assessing all the parameters of the surrounding environment.
The window wasn't very large, but he managed to squeeze his body through.
Just as he finished calculating, his legs, pushed to their limits, propelled him backward. He reached out and grabbed the rope ahead of him. When he released his legs, the force from his lower body became the final blow that snapped the rope.
With a loud 'crack', Yang Xiaoyou held onto the broken rope and was flung toward the wall of the building.
"Now!" As soon as the moment arrived, Yang Xiaoyou released his grip, tucked his knees in to protect his abdomen, crossed his arms in front of his head for protection, and launched himself like a precisely guided missile into the window ahead.
Peering down from the eaves, Noah and Nobunaga Hideyoshi saw that Yang Xiaoyou had successfully entered the building instead of falling. They both breathed a sigh of relief.
"The Boss's Reaction ability is indeed top-notch. In this situation, I wouldn't have done any better," Noah marveled. The entire process unfolded in an instant; from the first shot fired to Yang Xiaoyou swinging past took only a few seconds.
"If it were you, you would have fallen straight down. Your size wouldn't fit through that window. However, Aser seems to have some hidden injuries; there were unnatural twists in some of his movements. That's probably why he didn't take many shots along the way," Nobunaga Hideyoshi said after relaxing a bit, a thoughtful expression crossing his handsome face that could make women envious.
No matter how hard they thought about it, they would never understand that aside from memories, their rather cheap employer had only just officially engaged in 'combat' today; before this, he had merely been an ordinary student with a slight reclusive tendency.
Once they confirmed that Yang Xiaoyou was temporarily safe, they turned to find the staircase and prepared to head down. The gunfire from earlier clearly indicated that the people inside did not seem very friendly.
With a loud bang, Yang Xiaoyou crashed through the narrow window and fell heavily to the ground, rolling a short distance. The shattered glass shards left many small cuts on his arms and thighs through his Cloak and combat suit.
His head was protected by a sturdy helmet and suffered no damage; however, due to the violent impact, the helmet was flung off and landed on the ground in front of him. The hamster he had picked up also flew out and lay dazed on the floor.
"Cough cough, damn it! Who did I provoke? Tsk, it's no wonder it's a prison window—it's so high up! What a hassle," Yang Xiaoyou grumbled as he reached for the helmet ahead of him.
However,
Just as Yang Xiaoyou raised his hand to pick up the helmet, he noticed a hint of a fiery red skirt peeking out behind it and feet clad in white socks. He froze completely.
Struggling to lift his head, he saw a girl standing before him in a Miko Outfit. She looked exquisite like a porcelain doll, seemingly stepped out of a painting, her cold eyes fixed intently on him.
At that moment, passing through the partitions and the sinks, Yang Xiaoyou finally understood what kind of place this was. The feeling of entering a women's restroom for the first time in his life was anything but pleasant.
"Hey, what a coincidence," he said, forcing a smile that looked worse than crying, his face turning green.
At that moment, he would have preferred to see a corpse standing in front of him rather than this girl. The only consolation was that based on his memory, this girl's personality should prevent her from—
However, before he could finish that thought, Feng Lin ignored him completely and stepped right over him as if he didn't exist at all. Her eyes were devoid of any emotion, as if she were indifferent to everything around her.
As her wooden clogs stomped down on his palm, Yang Xiaoyou felt as if his bones were about to break.
"Wooden clogs, huh, sister?" Yang Xiaoyou thought with a twinge of pain.
Calmly leaping over him, Feng Lin approached a stall and opened the door to enter. Just before she stepped inside, the doll-like girl paused for a moment, glanced down at Yang Xiaoyou, and emotionlessly uttered two crisp words.
"Pervert."
With that, she walked in and let the door close automatically behind her.
