“B441, respond if you hear me! B441, respond! Ascend to a higher altitude! B441!” A middle-aged man in a uniform, with a grim expression, grabbed the microphone from the contact staff and shouted.
Ten minutes ago, the passenger plane flying from San Francisco suddenly lost contact with the ground, which was quite unusual. As Shanghai was one of the most internationalized cities in the Chinese Empire, the authorities had been particularly vigilant about such incidents since the 9/11 attacks.
The sudden loss of contact with a passenger plane was a serious issue. Not only had they lost communication, but monitoring systems also indicated that the aircraft's altitude was decreasing, which was highly abnormal.
Now that the plane had reached urban airspace, there were no other options available except to try and contact the personnel above.
“Have we calculated its trajectory?” The Airport Manager shouted with a fierce look on his face.
“It’s still on its scheduled flight path; it seems there’s been an incident in the cockpit,” replied a young man who was rapidly typing on his keyboard, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
It appeared that communication with the cockpit had suddenly been severed. The plane continued along its planned route, but without manual control during descent, it would be impossible to land safely. The decreasing altitude made this clear.
“Damn it! Clear a spot on the designated runway; all flights must be halted! Is firefighting prepared?” The manager slammed his fist against the control panel and issued commands in quick succession.
Evacuating crowds at an international airport was no easy task; it would be difficult to accomplish in a short time and could easily lead to chaos. There was no way to complete this before the plane made an emergency landing. Fortunately, advanced autopilot technology meant that while it couldn’t land safely without manual assistance, the location for an emergency landing wouldn’t change significantly.
One small consolation was that the aircraft's fuel supply was running low, alleviating concerns about an explosion.
“I hate flight delays. Kevin, I remember your son is in Shanghai; aren’t you going to see him?” A somewhat handsome White man with dark brown hair and a bright smile said to an Asian man beside him.
“It’s Z, not SH. He’s old enough; he won’t starve. A sheltered eaglet will never learn to fly,” corrected the Asian man regarding his employer's misunderstanding.
A Beautiful Young Woman nearby nodded in agreement as she organized her backpack.
“Ah, I heard he’s a Survivor from Kapa City. I really wanted to ask him some questions; it’s such a pity I missed out,” said the man, his eyes sparkling with intrigue.
“Uh, what are you looking at? Heh heh, this is just a perfectly normal game for all ages,” Yang Xiaoyou said as she finally escaped from a group of enthusiastic fans and noticed Feng Lin staring at her game packaging.
"All ages." It seemed that Feng Lin did not quite understand Yang Xiaoyou's words. She tilted her head and tapped her chin, pondering for a moment before asking again, "Sister complex?"
"Pfft." Yang Xiaoyou almost choked, unable to handle her rapid change of topic. Suddenly, a rather ominous feeling surged within her.
"Uh, Lin, where did you hear that term?" Yang Xiaoyou asked, feeling a bit exasperated.
"Menglu," Feng Lin replied, seemingly unable to hide her ignorance.
Upon hearing this, Yang Xiaoyou couldn't help but rub her forehead. That bastard Qi Menglu, had she really exposed all of Yang Xiaoyou's secrets?
After Qi Menglu discovered Yang Xiaoyou's treasured collection, she had gained access to a wealth of secrets unknown to the Outsiders. Due to her admiration for soft girls, many of Yang Xiaoyou's treasures leaned towards that theme. She never expected Qi Menglu would spill this to Feng Lin.
Was she trying to create a bad impression? As memories of her interactions with Feng Lin resurfaced, Yang Xiaoyou began to realize something. Tentatively, she asked Feng Lin, "Uh, has she told you anything about me?"
Feng Lin seemed to think for a moment before replying flatly, "When you were three years old..."
"Stop, stop, stop! H-hey, that fellow!" The more it sounded off, the more alarmed Yang Xiaoyou became. She quickly interrupted Feng Lin. Standing in front of Feng Lin felt like being completely exposed, as if even the fact that she wet the bed was known. It truly felt like hitting a wall.
If Qi Menglu were in front of her right now, she would definitely give her a good smack on the backside. No wonder the Feng Lin in her memories seemed to know everything about her. At first, she had only been slightly puzzled by it since she hadn’t focused on this aspect; now the truth was laid bare.
"Uh, I have indeed experienced quite a bit with that girl Qi Menglu." Previously taken for granted, hearing Feng Lin say it like this suddenly made Yang Xiaoyou feel a bit strange.
Shaking her head to dispel those odd thoughts and calling Huang Wei and the others to check on their progress in line, Yang Xiaoyou then took hold of Feng Lin's hand and led her to a nearby clothing store.
It was merely an instinctive action at first, but once Yang Xiaoyou felt the softness of Feng Lin's hand, her heart fluttered. The delicate sensation revealed no hint of destructive power.
Soon after, she began to feel a bit nervous; this was likely the first time in reality that they had interacted like this. She hoped it wouldn’t leave any bad impressions.
As for letting go midway? Well, that would probably be more off-putting than releasing her hand after reaching their destination.
Feng Lin’s outfit was incredibly eye-catching at the venue. Yang Xiaoyou couldn’t help but wonder what strange things Qi Menglu had taught her when they were together.
A group of tourists attending the International Anime Expo saw Yang Xiaoyou holding Feng Lin's hand, all wearing expressions that suggested they wanted to 'chop off' her hand.
"Pick out a set you like; consider it a gift from me. Uh, just don't choose anything too expensive," Yang Xiaoyou said, the first part sounding generous while the latter part clearly revealed his financial constraints.
When Feng Lin was teaching herself how to cultivate her energy, she held nothing back. Giving her some everyday clothes was hardly a big deal in comparison.
"I'll handle it," Yang Xiaoyou said, looking at Feng Lin dressed in a ridiculous Bear Costume. He felt completely defeated by her. Perhaps she had never chosen normal clothes for herself before; after wandering around the store, she emerged wearing a plush Bear Costume, complete with a hat adorned with two fluffy bear ears. The hat was so oversized that it nearly obscured her eyes, making her look incredibly cute.
However, as adorable as she was, this outfit was far more bizarre than her original Miko Outfit.
Just as Yang Xiaoyou was about to use his often-criticized aesthetic sense to help her pick something out, the sound of passing police cars outside caught his attention.
"Woo!" Before the police cars had fully passed, an air raid siren blared throughout the city.
This sudden change caused some commotion among the nearby people.
"This one will do," Feng Lin stubbornly insisted, surprisingly rejecting Yang Xiaoyou's suggestion.
With the unexpected turn of events, Yang Xiaoyou found himself at a loss for how to persuade her; perhaps due to Feng Lin's personality, he couldn't find an entry point for convincing her.
At that moment, Yang Xiaoyou's phone rang with its distinctive tone again. "Where are you? There's been a Major Incident!!" Huang Wei's voice sounded anxious and tense, even carrying a hint of tears, which filled Yang Xiaoyou with an ominous premonition.
Under these circumstances, helping Feng Lin choose clothes had to be put on hold. This was the International Anime Expo; going out like this wouldn’t seem too strange. Moreover, since her appearance was somewhat obscured by the costume, it would likely reduce any chaos compared to her Miko Outfit.
Grabbing Feng Lin's hand clad in fluffy gloves, Yang Xiaoyou calmly asked as they headed outside, "What exactly happened?"
"The entire Pudong District has been quarantined! We're in the second Quarantine Zone! There’s been a Class A Infectious Disease Incident near Pudong Airport! It’s very likely the same virus that appeared in Kapa City! I’m getting static here; hurry over!" Huang Wei's voice suddenly became distorted as if interrupted by some overwhelming interference before the call cut off completely.
Seeing the empty phone screen, Yang Xiaoyou realized that things were serious.
"How is this possible? It can't be! SH has absolutely never been attacked by the H Virus; it has never happened!" Yang Xiaoyou supported her forehead with one hand, desperately searching her memory for any fragments of information. Indeed, there was nothing regarding an infection in Shanghai.
Although she had been treated as a White Mouse for several years, she would certainly have known if a biochemical incident had occurred near her hometown. The Chinese Empire had cities that experienced viral outbreaks, but SH City had definitely not been one of them!
This was a new incident caused by the Butterfly Effect. Yang Xiaoyou never expected that some of her unintentional actions would lead to such significant changes in the world.
Undoubtedly, after such a major event in SH, many historical trajectories would likely shift to some extent.
"A second-level Quarantine Zone? Safety concerns shouldn't be too worrisome," Yang Xiaoyou thought as her heart raced.
Due to the tragedy in Kapa City, although governments around the world focused on calming the public, various contingency plans were put on the agenda. The swift reaction from SH to establish multiple Quarantine Zones was indeed remarkably prompt.
Looking up at several military helicopters flying overhead with loud rotor sounds, Yang Xiaoyou's mind flashed back to the image of a passenger plane that had flown by.
In previous H Virus incidents, there had been several cases where passenger planes crashed, and it was very likely that this time was no different. The Pudong International Airport, now designated as a Quarantine Zone, had probably already become a breeding ground for the virus.
