"Security officer, she really was feeling a bit feverish when she arrived. I am one of the Survivors from the 617 incident. There is a clear difference between her appearance and that of someone who has been Infected. I wouldn't joke about my life," Yang Xiaoyou said to the security officer who was preparing to take Ke away.
"That's right! He was part of our Yuying Middle School Field Trip Group. It was reported on TV multiple times during that period," chimed in a chubby boy following Huang Wei. He was also a student from Yuying Middle School and had joined a strange club called the FFF Group, earning him the nickname "Fatty."
Upon hearing that Yang Xiaoyou was a Survivor of the 617 incident, the security officer's expression changed, revealing a hint of joy. Although there were frequent broadcasts about the H Virus on television, no one had ever seen it firsthand; the only outbreak occurred in Kapa City.
Having a Survivor present eased his mind significantly. Regardless of anything else, at least this person had experience in such matters.
"Since that's the case, let's leave it at that for now. I need to consult with the manager. I hope you aren't just trying to protect your friend out of goodwill," the security officer nodded and left the room.
He still remembered the sick guest; despite everything, she hadn't shown any signs of deterioration after all this time. With the confirmation from this Survivor, there shouldn't be much of an issue.
However, he still chose to consult with the manager.
"Mind your own business! What do you know about being saved by others? Acting like you're an expert," Chen Kai muttered, feeling somewhat drained from being targeted by everyone. After a cold snort, he grumbled a couple more words but didn't persist further.
Now that he thought about it, he suddenly realized that even another boy in their group, who had previously been friendly with him, now looked at him with unfamiliar eyes.
"Don't be ungrateful! I'm taking on this villain role for your sake! You believe an Outsider just because they say two words? I'm done talking to you all. If you want them to stay, let them stay in your room! I'm leaving!" After saying this, he walked out of the room looking somewhat disheveled but shot Yang Xiaoyou a fierce glare as he passed by, his face filled with resentment.
It seemed he attributed all his feelings of exclusion to Yang Xiaoyou. For someone who never looked for faults within himself, Yang Xiaoyou had no sympathy for him.
"Um, everyone, I'll go check on him. He probably knows he's wrong but is too proud to admit it," another boy named Xu stood up awkwardly as the atmosphere grew tense.
Initially, he fully supported Ke getting vaccinated but later felt Chen Kai had gone too far and spoke up more than necessary. Now staying here felt quite uncomfortable.
After this fellow left, a girl with freckles on her face but exuding liveliness tossed her pillow aside disdainfully and said, "Hmph! It's ridiculous how Chen Kai used to fawn over Ke. Thankfully Ke didn't agree to him; it's appalling that he would kick someone when they're down in such a critical moment."
Among the five girls in the Cat Star Team, while not all were stunning beauties, they were certainly competent enough for their roles. Now that they were slightly more familiar with each other, Huang Wei and his friends found themselves nodding along to their conversation much more confidently than they had on the train.
"Alright, everyone take a break. This night is the hardest to endure. If we get through it, the troop movements should be nearly complete, and the security of the city will be assured. But if we don't make it and a large-scale riot breaks out, then we could face serious problems. Lock your doors; no matter what happens outside, try not to open them." Yang Xiaoyou didn't think much about the hatred directed at that kind of character. After glancing at the crowd below from the window, she fell into contemplation.
After a while, the order on the streets had clearly deteriorated further. A jewelry store beside them had already been smashed, and even with police firing warning shots, they couldn't stop the crowd from rushing in to loot.
It seemed that due to the police firing their weapons, someone in the crowd shouted something in response, resulting in a nearby group of people overpowering a police officer on the ground. It appeared that even his gun had been taken away, and the fallen officer was left unaware of his fate.
"How could this happen?" Someone beside her looked out the window and turned pale at the sight below.
"There are too few police officers. Most of those involved probably don't even realize what they're doing. In times like this, it's all too easy to blindly follow others' actions. When they see others looting, they join in; when they see others attacking police officers, they do the same.
Morality and order are determined by the consciousness of the group. Once most people here believe that looting and destruction are right, then they become right; they become moral." Seeing that order had completely spiraled out of control and was collapsing on a large scale, Yang Xiaoyou's expression darkened.
Why had Kapa City nearly fallen entirely? This was closely related to the earlier collapse of order; humanity's self-inflicted damage was greater than that caused by the Corpse itself.
In such circumstances, it was hard to blame those blindly following the crowd too much. Fear had stripped them of their basic judgment, leading them to follow blindly. The true instigators were those who incited chaos; many were definitely driven by their own agendas.
In fact, maintaining a calm mind in this situation made one’s position more dangerous, just like that police officer.
Glancing at her left arm and lightly clenching her fist, Yang Xiaoyou sighed. For now, she could only hope that their hotel wouldn't attract too much attention and could withstand some of the impact. She could only pretend that everything was fine on the surface; her actual combat capability was likely less than thirty percent. Continuing to exert herself would only worsen her injuries.
If she were to unleash the negative effects brought on by her personality assimilation due to killing, it would truly be disastrous.
However, under these circumstances, even if someone charged into the hotel and broke into room after room, it was unlikely they would cause much chaos here. The chances of being shot were low; after all, the truly chaotic areas remained on the streets and in some lavishly decorated shops nearby.
"Find something to block the door. We have enough people here; as long as we stick together, we shouldn't face too many problems. But ladies, it's best to keep quiet." After noticing that someone downstairs had already broken through security defenses, Yang Xiaoyou pulled down the curtains and turned away.
Now it seemed that most of the Corpse had been contained within the airport Quarantine Zone. Due to the Vaccine, there should be very few airborne transmitters; any occasional appearances would likely be quickly suppressed. Yet now it was uninfected crowds causing a massive impact here.
It couldn't be anything but ironic.
"Bang! Bang!"
"Open the door!"
"Please make some space for us to rest."
"Hurry up and open the door! Why do you get to occupy such a comfortable resting place while we are out here on edge?"
"What’s with all the chatter at a time like this? We need to share the space; there’s clearly room for more people in here."
As some hurried footsteps approached, various noises began to echo from outside.
Hearing the chaotic sounds outside, Yang Xiaoyou regretted throwing away her gun after leaving their previous location. Although Feng Lin's combat prowess surpassed that of a firearm, her intimidating presence was hardly effective. In this environment, even picking up a handgun would have been useful.
Meanwhile, Huang Wei and the others had dragged a bed to the door, bracing it against the tightly locked entrance. Just moments after securing it, they heard loud banging on the door.
