"Don't panic, we'll go together and let them know there are plenty of us inside. Ladies, just try to stay quiet," Yang Xiaoyou said as she followed Huang Wei and the others to the door, moving along the bed that was blocking it.
Then, the chubby guy shouted, "We already have enough people here, please look for someone else."
The others chimed in, agreeing with him. It was clearly irrational to argue about whose room this was at a time like this. With so many men inside, they should be able to handle the trouble outside. Meanwhile, Yang Xiaoyou's friends were armed with makeshift weapons like a lamp, a telephone, and a toilet brush.
It was a rather sad sight; their combat effectiveness was questionable at best.
Upon hearing five or six young male voices from inside, the people outside fell silent and seemed to move on to other rooms.
Seeing this, the few people in the room visibly relaxed. If things could remain stable until dawn, once the quarantine zone had its security forces established, there would be no problem.
The H Virus could only survive for four hours under direct sunlight. This meant that as long as all the corpses in Pudong Airport were cleaned up and burned within that time frame, theoretically, there would be no H Virus left in the air. After that, a twelve-hour quarantine could confirm that no one had fallen ill before lifting the quarantine zone.
After a whole night’s work, it was estimated that they would have finished cleaning up the corpses at the regular airport by then. If sunrise was around six-thirty, they could likely release the lockdown by around one in the early morning.
Of course, this depended on not having too many cases of airborne infection during that time.
"Lin, let me hold onto the weapon," Yang Xiaoyou said as she shook her normal right hand and turned to Feng Lin.
After all, she was a girl. While her combat skills were high, her intimidation factor was rather lacking. It was better for her to hold onto the weapon just in case.
"Hey, hey! You can't be serious! You think you can handle it better than me? The chubby guy and Fool can do it," Huang Wei complained.
Before he could finish his sentence, Yang Xiaoyou had already taken the blade-shaped longsword from him. She gripped the hilt below the guard and flicked her thumb against it before releasing the guard to grasp the hilt firmly. She then made a few casual swipes in the air.
Her movements were natural and practiced, causing Huang Wei—who had been about to speak—to close his mouth obediently. He suddenly remembered that although Yang Xiaoyou seemed unremarkable, her parents were from special forces; perhaps she had trained a bit at home.
While her practical combat ability might not be impressive, her showmanship seemed quite good. Thinking this way made Huang Wei feel somewhat regretful; maybe he should hit the gym himself—after all, it might come in handy to show off a little in times like these.
In his mind, Yang Xiaoyou recalled some explanations about swordsmanship from Feng Lin. Unconsciously, he mimicked a few moves. Although he wasn't skilled with traditional weapons, striking a pose was no problem for him. Moreover, his own style had begun to diverge from the memory of his past self.
Moving in this direction seemed promising; at least wielding such a thing would be seen more as a display of skill rather than a means to kill. His original identity could also be maintained while demonstrating some techniques.
"Don't look at me like that; the hidden threat is that girl. Don't let her appearance fool you; if something goes wrong, we’ll have to rely on her. I'm just trying to intimidate," Yang Xiaoyou said jokingly, trying to ease the tension among his surprised companions.
However, at that moment, the group that should have gone to other rooms returned, banging on the door loudly.
"Open up! We heard someone inside has a fever! We need to check this out! Do you want to endanger everyone else?" The initially rough voice shouted again.
It seemed that he felt justified in his actions, as he shouted loudly enough to attract the attention of others nearby.
Hearing the commotion in the corridor and whispers among the crowd, the expressions of those present turned grim.
"That bastard Chen Kai! It must be him!" the leader of the girls, a freckled girl, exclaimed angrily, though there was an undertone of fear in her voice.
The people present were not fools; they knew that even if everything was fine, problems could easily arise in such situations. Moreover, it was clear that Chen Kai had not truly recovered from his fever. Expecting those outside to behave like the security guards earlier was unrealistic.
It was likely that they understood there shouldn’t be any major issues on their side but wanted to use this as an excuse to make things difficult for them due to personal motives.
With several youthful and attractive girls in such a place and their opponents having found a suitable excuse, no one could guarantee what would happen next.
Even if the surveillance footage in the hotel corridor could be preserved, they could easily shift blame onto those investigating the infected individuals. After all, they were in a quarantine zone where controlling the spread of infection took precedence over everything else.
"You should explain this," said Fool, the largest among Yang Xiaoyou's group.
"There's no way to explain this right now. Their goal isn't really concern for Chen's fever; it's just an outlet for their own primal fears. Hey, get ready; ladies, move to that corner," Yang Xiaoyou replied. He realized that there was no way to resolve this peacefully; it seemed they would have to make an example out of someone.
Although it might provoke injuries, it was better for him to handle it himself at this point. For those who were losing their rationality, even Feng Lin's impressive performance wouldn't have much deterrent effect unless he resorted to extreme measures—far less effective than Yang Xiaoyou taking action himself.
The sharp sound of a gunshot echoed from outside, causing Yang Xiaoyou's heart to skip a beat. However, the words that followed quickly eased his tension.
"Hey, where did all these Zombies come from? Let's kill them all." A somewhat lazy voice rang out, followed by a commotion outside.
"You... you killed someone! What right do you have to kill? A gun? Are you a police officer?! Can the police shoot at civilians? Who gave you that authority?" The man who had shouted was now visibly flustered.
From his words, it was clear that this fellow still had his wits about him. He was trying to pin the moral high ground on the other person, hoping to resonate with those around him.
"This Zombie can even talk; how interesting. How could humans commit such madness at a time like this? They don't even spare the elderly, beating them to death. Hmph! Is it just because they wouldn't open the door?" The lazy voice seemed somewhat surprised, and after another gunshot rang out, the man who had been speaking fell completely silent.
Then came a series of gunshots mixed with terrified screams from outside. In no time, the entire corridor fell quiet.
"Wow, a tough character has arrived. But I like it. Hmm, I feel like I've heard that voice somewhere recently." Yang Xiaoyou was taken aback by the commotion outside. The fellow who somehow got his hands on a gun was remarkably decisive, not even allowing for an explanation.
If the other party had fired a warning shot first, their fate would likely have ended up like that of the police officer.
However, it was precisely such people who were best suited to deal with those who took advantage of others' misfortunes and stirred up chaos. Sometimes, it takes a villain to handle another villain.
