Chapter One Hundred Ninety-Four: A Bustling Scene
"Absolutely not." With a deadpan expression, Yang Xiaoyou looked at the mixed-race middle-aged man in front of him without a hint of hesitation.
It was absurd; he had no interest in this aspect at all. If it weren't for finding an excuse to come to Japan and make up for his unfortunate credits, he wouldn't even bother wasting time on the scans.
Was he supposed to personally join the R&D team at Wasp Arms? That was a joke. Besides, his own R&D team hadn't even made any preparations yet; Arms was still primarily focused on reselling.
The most important point was that the waters surrounding mechas were too murky. Although he was involved in Arms, he had no desire to get involved at this stage. At the very least, he wanted to wait until his company had expanded and fully established itself before considering such matters.
William had originally been a researcher at Lockheed Martin, but after Elder Josen's death, Thunder God Corporation poached him due to his research achievements. They ultimately finalized the prototype for the mecha, and the two prototypes from the Chinese Empire adopted a similar modular design.
As for how the Chinese Empire acquired its technology back then, Yang Xiaoyou was unclear. He hadn't cared about such news at that time; they managed to obtain it somehow. When the rumors first surfaced, people in America were practically jumping up and down in outrage.
However, due to changes in the world line, Thunder God Corporation was now facing internal and external troubles. Their ongoing lawsuit with Lockheed Martin had turned into a drawn-out affair, and even their secondary agents were out trying to fend for themselves. Naturally, they had no energy left to poach talent from others.
William should still be at Lockheed Martin now. His departure had clearly been due to unfavorable circumstances, and now he seemed to have enough free time to attend this youth competition. It seemed that the Father of Mechas was having a rough time these days.
After rejecting the offer without any hesitation, Yang Xiaoyou quickly sorted through the current situation in his mind.
What disappointed Yang Xiaoyou was that, as he well knew, his company was still too young, especially in R&D where they were almost at a blank stage. Otherwise, this would have been a great opportunity for talent acquisition.
It wouldn't be an issue to set up two existing production lines or something similar, but getting into weapon development—a long-term investment with slow returns—was truly beyond his current capabilities.
At the very least, he needed to wait until their Virtual Docking Technology started generating profits and providing financial support before considering such ventures; otherwise, he would end up failing on both fronts.
For controlling greed, Yang Xiaoyou had always done quite well.
Since the other party no longer held any value for him, there was naturally no need to cater to them; a rejection was simply a rejection.
However, even though Yang Xiaoyou rejected the offer decisively and without hesitation, William on the other side became increasingly unsettled.
Initially, he had a bit of admiration for this student in front of him, but it wasn't to the extent that he felt compelled to lure him in. His words were more about a genuine appreciation for talent.
If the student had simply found an excuse to decline, he would have let it go without further thought.
But the expression on Yang Xiaoyou's face and the firmness of his rejection made William feel quite uncomfortable. He was already feeling marginalized within the company, and this felt like a direct jab at his vulnerabilities.
"Young man, Dr. William is one of the most authoritative figures globally," one of his assistants began to say, but was quickly interrupted by William raising his hand.
"Forget it. If he doesn't want it, then so be it." It seemed that William was reminded of his current environment, and he let out a sigh, appearing somewhat disinterested.
Just then, the door to Yang Xiaoyou's hospital room swung open again.
"Hi hi, Xiao You! Congratulations on safely escaping from that witch's clutches. I'm here to visit you!" A figure with flowing silver hair entered the room—Fia—smiling brightly as she waved at Yang Xiaoyou from beside the bed.
Seeing this eccentric princess come to visit him, someone he had only met twice before, startled Yang Xiaoyou for a moment. He wondered if he had inadvertently revealed something about himself.
However, he soon realized that he was just overthinking it.
Although Fia Haek Media seemed to be greeting her, Yang Xiaoyou clearly sensed that the other person's attention was focused on William, who was standing aside. Even her own unique aura was subtly displayed without her conscious awareness.
On the surface, her smiling expression appeared quite cute, but within that cuteness lay an inexplicable charm. Meanwhile, Huang Wei, who looked as if he had been energized, found himself at a loss for how to approach her. It seemed he didn't even understand why he couldn't muster the courage to say hello.
In response to this situation, Yang Xiaoyou feigned surprise and said, "I didn't expect Sister Heckmedia to come. Thank you for your concern."
"Heckmedia?" William raised an eyebrow in surprise upon hearing Yang Xiaoyou use the surname. He glanced at the seemingly harmless and adorable girl, his eyes flickering with unspoken thoughts.
When Fia heard Yang Xiaoyou refer to her with a longer surname, she paused slightly. She had originally intended to approach her target gradually, but this unexpected formality made her wary; after all, her father held considerable status in the Arms industry.
"I can't believe your daughter has grown up so much. Your father and I graduated from the same school," William said, his expression tinged with nostalgia.
Seeing that the two who had initially used the excuse of visiting a sick friend had now completely sidelined her, Yang Xiaoyou couldn't help but roll her eyes.
Lockheed Martin's willingness to confront Thor for Elder Josen indicated their emphasis on talent. However, it seemed that their fellows lacked insight; William had been poached by Thor in her memory, and now Fia was clearly playing a different game.
Yang Xiaoyou understood that she could confirm William's theory was correct based on facts from her memory. However, given that everything was still unclear at this point, taking risks to improve his theory would require substantial courage.
It was evident that after investing considerable effort into acquiring Elder Josen and his research, Lockheed Martin did not want to take further risks in this aspect.
As for Fia's motives—whether she aimed to poach talent for their HLI Company’s transformation or to strengthen ties with their partners in the UK—Yang Xiaoyou chose not to meddle. She simply hoped these two fellows would leave soon to avoid any trouble for herself.
However, it was clear that although Fia's main target wasn't Yang Xiaoyou, she had used this as an excuse to come over. Both sides seemed eager to leave but still engaged in some small talk before departing.
At one side, One-Eyed Weimar stood faithfully at the door, seemingly on guard against an attack.
Yang Xiaoyou had taken care of Ming Mei Shuang Ying without notifying Fia, who was likely still on high alert for any sudden ambush.
Just as these individuals were about to leave, the door to Yang Xiaoyou's hospital room swung open once more.
Qian Kai, the head of the bodyguards, walked in from outside, holding some fruit in his hands. It seemed he had come to visit Yang Xiaoyou and express his apologies for not being able to protect him properly.
The bustling hospital room made Yang Xiaoyou feel a bit overwhelmed; it would be better to handle the discharge procedures as soon as possible.
"Hmm? Have we met somewhere before?" Qian Kai entered, and the already strange atmosphere in the room suddenly became oppressive.
Following this feeling, Qian Kai noticed Weimar staring intently at him with her remaining eye, a mysterious smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
"Wow, I didn't recognize you with one eye gone. What a hassle. I didn't expect you to survive. Did the instructor go easy on you, or did you manage to hide under your companion's corpse to escape his pursuit?" Upon sensing the inexplicable hostility from Weimar, Qian Kai seemed to recognize her instantly, a mocking smile creeping onto his lips.
However, he dropped the fruit bag onto the floor, his body tensing up as if ready to explode at any moment.
