Chapter 104: The Turning Point
Tokyo at night should have been ablaze with lights, radiating vitality that surpassed daylight.
Yet now, the entire street was shrouded in darkness, save for the eerie and terrifying sounds of "whoo whoo" echoing through the area.
Only the moonlight above offered a faint glimpse of the scene below.
The night sky was a rare sight in this city that never sleeps, adorned with stars.
At that moment, a figure was perched on the second-floor window of an Electronics Store, one leg dangling outside as they casually leaned against the windowsill, surveying the outside world.
A cold wind carrying a faint scent of blood and decay swept by, tousling the hair of Yang Xiaoyou.
"I hope tonight will be a bit calmer," he murmured, lost in thought as he gazed outside, letting out a sigh.
Compared to the completely blind Licker, the Corpse still had some vision left, though it was significantly impaired, unable to perform complex calculations. In this dim environment, the wandering and howling Corpse on the street could not detect him.
"Is it really necessary to be out at this hour? Aren't you going to rest? If a night-dwelling creature like you doesn't sleep all night, you'll end up as a corpse too," came a voice from behind him, noticeably lowered in volume. Yang Xiaoyou turned his head to glance at Chen Wuyou, who stood casually with one hand on her hip.
Her thick down jacket did little to conceal her alluring figure, and the soft moonlight cast an ethereal glow upon her.
"I will rest; after all, I'm one of the boys from our three families—a Survivor who escaped from Kapa City. Don't think too highly of me," Yang Xiaoyou replied, his immunity to her condescending remarks quite high as he brushed off her words.
"You seem to be hiding quite a bit from me; you're just a follower at this point," Chen Wuyou said with an odd expression on her face, her slender fingers pointing playfully at her seductive red lips.
"Well, whatever. Getting to know a pervert's life might rub off on me too; do as you wish. I'm going to rest now. Although that Bloodthirsty monster looks ruthless, having such an idiot around is somewhat protective; I might actually get a good night's sleep." With a casual wave of her hand and a yawn, Chen Wuyou turned and headed inside.
Hearing her words made Yang Xiaoyou display an expression akin to that of a dead fish; through his automatic translation of her tone, it seemed she wanted to express some gratitude, but just then—
"Ah!"
In the hazy morning, a piercing scream echoed through the entire street, cutting through the eerie silence that had settled after the low growls of the Corpse had quieted down. The scream was jarring in the stillness.
Yang Xiaoyou, who had just climbed down from the windowsill, frowned as he glanced at a building across the street about one or two hundred meters away. He gently closed the window. In a city with a population in the millions, it was no surprise that Lickers had already begun to appear.
Only one had been spotted on the street so far, and for now, it remained on their side.
Although there hadn't been any sounds of gunfire yet, it was unlikely that Japan's Self-Defense Forces would be wiped out so quickly. They were likely in the process of regrouping to enter the city. When they fully assembled and began their entry, the sound-sensitive Lickers would probably be drawn to them, increasing the chances of encountering them as they moved toward Tokyo Bay.
However, since their presence had already been detected, it was time to prepare for departure. The Survivor who had screamed had inadvertently helped them.
"Get up, get up! It's time to move," Yang Xiaoyou said as he kicked Huang Wei and his group, who were huddled together and sleeping like dead pigs. He couldn't help but feel a bit envious; these less thoughtful fellows could sleep comfortably in any environment.
Huang Wei, who was dreaming while snuggling against his plump companion's chest and drooling, woke up groggily. When he realized he was hugging a fat guy, his face fell.
Fortunately, before he could lament, Yang Xiaoyou kicked him to the ground. "Quiet down! Those things have already appeared. About a minute ago, we spotted a misfortunate soul one hundred sixty-seven meters away across the street. But there's no need to worry too much; although it's not far, it's not close either. There should be plenty of other Survivors nearby to share the attention. We need to leave now."
As Yang Xiaoyou began waking everyone up, Charming Shadow, who had been sleeping lightly, opened her eyes and roused Chen Wuyou and Dream Butterfly as well.
"Quickly prepare some emergency food. Everyone should travel light; we're in the city, so finding protein-rich food shouldn't be difficult. Try to take chocolate or energy bars and some water; leave everything else for those people. Good luck to them." While speaking, Yang Xiaoyou started organizing some simple items.
Since he had already sorted everything out yesterday, he just needed to stuff a few things into his pockets now. He also grabbed a mini backpack that wouldn't hinder his movement.
Charming Shadow reacted swiftly as well during this process. Yang Xiaoyou discreetly observed Dream Butterfly, who still wore her cap. She simply took an energy bar and put it in her pocket before grabbing a bottle of mineral water without making any further preparations. Her demeanor was calm but lacked any signs of being well-trained.
"I believe the shopkeeper is relieved by our departure as well. We'll leave these supplies with you; I hope you can survive." After everyone was ready to go, Yang Xiaoyou finally waved goodbye with a smile to the now-awakened shopkeeper and staff.
This was their first meeting but also their last; perhaps if they were lucky and that Licker was full, it wouldn't come looking for trouble.
Upon hearing Yang Xiaoyou's words, the shopkeeper—who had previously felt conflicted—nodded solemnly. "Thank you for your generosity; we cannot leave with you. We wish you safe travels."
"Okay, let's go." With that, Yang Xiaoyou took the lead with a baseball bat in hand and opened the side door to step outside. Huang Wei and the others followed closely behind him, each carrying a bat and protecting Dream Butterfly and Chen Wuyou in between them while Charming Shadow brought up the rear.
The moment they stepped out of the room, everyone felt their hearts race, and their movements down the stairs became unusually cautious.
Due to a scream coming from another direction, many nearby Corpses were drawn to it. However, even so, two Corpses still lingered about ten meters away at the foot of the stairs.
The Cold Air had somewhat protected their bodies, but after freezing all night, their mobility had significantly decreased.
Taking a step forward, while the two Corpses were still unaware, Yang Xiaoyou swung her baseball bat and struck one of them hard on the head. Following through with the momentum of the swing, she executed a perfect roundhouse kick that connected with the other one, the sound of cracking bones echoing in a way that made one's heart tremble.
After swiftly dispatching the two, Yang Xiaoyou turned her head slightly to signal the others to follow.
"Hey, your skills seem almost on par with Ahao's; I never would have guessed," Chen Wuyou remarked as she tightened her clothing. A strange expression crossed her face as she glanced at the two Corpse bodies on the ground, feeling a wave of nausea wash over her.
"Due to the low temperature, their mobility is even lower than usual. If you can overcome your fear and avoid getting scratched by them, these things are quite manageable. The only thing to worry about is their numbers and their strength, which, although slow, surpasses that of an ordinary person. Under no circumstances should we make too much noise—like firing a gun; that's a hard rule," Yang Xiaoyou explained simply to boost morale as everyone drew closer.
During the outbreak of the virus, many who could have survived lost their will to fight due to fear and ignorance or because they were afraid to shoot.
However, just after Yang Xiaoyou finished speaking about guns, a series of gunshots echoed from afar. The initial shot acted like a trigger, followed by a barrage of gunfire—the Self-Defense Forces had already assembled in the city.
