Chapter 105: Crisis
"Why not call for help from the incoming troops? Regardless of whether we are their citizens or not, they can't just ignore us when they encounter Survivors," Huang Wei muttered as he saw Yang Xiaoyou leading the team in the opposite direction.
"When it came to Kapa City, nearly the entire Marine Corps of the Hawaiian U.S. Military Garrison was wiped out, and Kapa City had a population in the millions. Here, we are dealing with tens of millions. Do you still want to go over there?" After observing for a while from a phone booth, Yang Xiaoyou replied nonchalantly. Even if they did encounter the Self-Defense Forces, to prevent the virus from spreading, they would certainly not take them out directly; there would definitely be another Quarantine Zone.
Huang Wei's face flashed with frustration at this remark. "Then they are just sending themselves to die."
"It's not about sending themselves to die. This is their capital; even if they mobilize the entire nation's resources, they must act. Moreover, once the virus spreads, the entire Honshu Main Island is at risk of falling," Yang Xiaoyou stated calmly after stepping down from his observation point.
He continued, "There are two main routes planned. One is to pass through the Central Area and directly utilize the Arakawa River's estuary. The advantage is that it's closer, but since there are no suitable large ports, we can't guarantee there will be boats available. After all, many Survivors who managed to survive might have similar plans. If there are no boats, we would have to travel quite a distance along the river, which compromises safety.
The other route is to go through the underground subway lines across Koto Ward, reaching Tokyo Port at the end of Line 3. This route is relatively longer; however, since Line 3 is currently under maintenance, there are no passengers inside except for construction crews, which should significantly increase safety."
While speaking, Yang Xiaoyou took out his phone that had no signal and pointed to a reminder message he had received some time ago.
Having just analyzed the environment on the street along with his mental assessment of gunfire dynamics and the general movement direction of the Horde as well as the recent position of a Self-Defense Forces unit, he had formed a clear understanding in his mind. He was confident that he could manage the overall direction without significant issues.
Encountering Corpses on the way was unavoidable, but he felt quite certain that they could avoid directly colliding with that overwhelming dense Horde.
"Let's move quickly; you are experts—handle it yourselves," Chen Wuyou said with an expression of indifference.
"Cough cough, let's head towards Arakawa first. If we can find a boat near the riverbank, it will save us a lot of trouble; we can leave via Waterway directly. However, since that area is close to a large moisture source, it tends to attract high-level Infected Entities. So if we don't spot anything suitable right away, we will immediately divert to Koto Ward and board at the Edo River's estuary. The scale of docks over there far exceeds that of Arakawa, and fishing boats should be easier to find," Yang Xiaoyou replied after being provoked by Chen Wuyou.
"The reason I’m sharing this with you is that based on my judgment of the Horde's movement patterns, we must reach specific locations at certain times along our route for hiding and resting. You all need to have an understanding; even if an unexpected separation occurs, try to follow this action plan," Yang Xiaoyou said as he pulled out a blood-stained map and marked several locations on it.
Determining the movement patterns of the Horde required waiting until they were outside before coordinating with gunfire from the Self-Defense Forces; hence he only calculated these optimal positions now.
Once rest points and approximate timeframes were established, everyone’s objectives became clear, transforming their blind escape into a reasonable relocation plan.
"Manager, is that news really true?" A female clerk in an electronics store asked timidly after Yang Xiaoyou and his group left.
"I don't know, but I do know that the chances of surviving outside are much lower than staying here. And did you hear the gunshots? The Self-Defense Forces will come to rescue us, absolutely." The store manager was unsure whether he was trying to comfort his subordinates or himself, continuously boosting their morale.
However, just as he finished speaking, a sharp, piercing scraping sound suddenly came from the tightly shut window covered by curtains.
With a loud crash, the glass seemed to be sliced by a Diamond Drill, falling inward and shattering on the floor.
As the glass shattered, a cold wind blew in, causing the curtains to flutter and create a whistling sound.
In the wake of this sudden change, the employees and the manager began to tremble uncontrollably. The two male employees and the manager gripped the last remaining baseball bat and folding chairs tightly as weapons.
Their eyes were fixed on the fluttering curtains. As the curtains moved, gaps occasionally opened up, revealing an ugly Crimson scene outside. At that moment, a red figure suddenly lunged in.
"What’s wrong?" Huang Wei asked nervously as he looked at Yang Xiaoyou, who had stopped in a narrow alley between two buildings.
Yang Xiaoyou didn’t respond; instead, she held her finger to her lips in a shushing gesture and then raised her head to observe above the two buildings.
Seeing Yang Xiaoyou's actions, Huang Wei and the others followed suit and looked up. However, when they spotted a red shadow darting quickly between the buildings before disappearing behind a cluster of air conditioning units, they all began to tremble.
Pointing in that direction with a worried expression on his face, Huang Wei silently mouthed words to Yang Xiaoyou, who appeared serious.
On the other side, Charming Shadow took out her dagger and exchanged glances with Yang Xiaoyou before making a "two" gesture with her hand.
Seeing her gesture, Yang Xiaoyou shook her head and indicated "three."
After making that gesture, Yang Xiaoyou suddenly felt something poking at him from behind. Turning his head, he saw Dream Butterfly extending four delicate fingers in front of him and waving them slightly.
After that, she pointed above their heads. At that moment, a drop of blood fell from above. A Licker, noticeably larger than usual, gradually peeked out from behind the eaves. Its tongue stirred in the air for a moment before it focused its gaze on Yang Xiaoyou and the others.
Despite the overwhelming stench of blood in the air aiding its sense of direction, its movements were still slow and tentative, indicating it had not yet fully confirmed their location.
The powerful forelimbs easily clawed into the building's rock layers, causing some dust to fall from the walls.
Upon seeing the terrifying creature with its fierce appearance, Huang Wei and the others instinctively covered their mouths with their hands, their eyes glistening with moisture as they seemed genuinely frightened.
Beside them, Chen Wuyou was faring better than the rest, but his face was still somewhat pale, and his body trembled unnaturally. The only ones who managed to remain calm were Yang Xiaoyou and Charming Shadow, along with Dream Butterfly, who still wore a hat that concealed part of her face.
In this narrow environment, encountering four Lickers was already quite alarming. Although there was some distance between them and the creatures had quieted down due to their heightened alertness, it would still take time to ascertain their positions.
However, the situation was already extremely dangerous. Even if they had guns, shooting in such an environment would be unwise. Engaging in close combat against two at once would be a considerable challenge for them. Although Charming Shadow had decent combat skills, given her current injuries, it was uncertain whether she could handle even one. A scratch would mean elimination.
Moreover, they also had to consider the safety of the others, which added to the difficulty.
"Ugh, I guess we can only buy some time. We'll have to take a risk," Heart decided, and Yang Xiaoyou began signaling tactics to Charming Shadow.
Occasionally, she pointed out several locations while also gesturing towards Huang Wei a few times.
Seeing the two look at him as if he were a tool, Huang Wei wore a distressed expression. Heart couldn't help but wail, "What do you want from me? My meat isn't tasty!"
Switching to another smart meter, Divine Horse's constant power outages were frustrating. The server room had lost power—what a tragedy! He wondered if they would experience outages when it came to their side as well.
