Chapter 130: Rescue
A sharp whistle echoed from the yacht, drawing the attention of the Licker that had climbed onto the dock.
Yet, despite their jumping ability, they were powerless against the yacht that had already set sail. They could only continue to leap on the dock, seemingly searching for a way to reach the yacht through the sewage system.
This phenomenon brought a sense of relief to those aboard the yacht, who had been under the shadow of death.
The journey had been fraught with anxiety, from the constant detours on the road to the desperate rush into the dock, which had placed immense psychological pressure on everyone.
Now that they had finally arrived at the yacht and set sail, the tension that had been held in check began to erupt. Many students who had forced themselves to stay strong along the way were now sobbing, both boys and girls alike.
Several of them embraced each other and cried together. What was supposed to be a celebratory scene now felt tinged with sadness and oppression.
Thinking back to when they arrived, there had been dozens of competitors and accompanying personnel, but now their numbers had dwindled by more than half. Qian Kai realized he was now alone among his teammates, and a hint of gloom crossed his face.
In contrast, Lucas and his group appeared much more relaxed. They were only responsible for the students from Yuying Middle School. Compared to others who had lost more than half their members, Yuying Middle School had fared relatively well. Aside from Wang Cheng's tragic infection, most of Huang Wei's group who had paid their own way and even Li Hong's competitors were mostly unharmed. Even Zhu Qibiao, their teacher, remained safe.
With such a grim example as Beside for comparison, their successful return to the country would undoubtedly create a sensation in the industry.
Qian Kai had to admit that if it weren't for Hive Security Company’s personnel, even he wouldn’t have been able to ensure so many students' safety—his own survival would have been uncertain as well.
When Nobunaga Hideyoshi took command during their initial meeting, he was right: when facing zombies, they were indeed the experts.
"You need a long time to recover from your injuries; drink less alcohol," Yang Xiaoyou said with a frown as she looked at Charming Shadow, who was holding a glass of red wine.
The fairy had first injured herself, and then, facing the Licker, she had worsened her injuries again. The only reason she could maintain the movements of an ordinary person was due to her own resilience and the help she received along the way with a few massages to keep her going.
Now, she was casually holding a Goblet, leaning against the edge of the ship as if admiring the sea view. She had changed into an outfit resembling a Black Cheongsam, which accentuated her graceful figure, and with the sea breeze blowing around her, it added an extra touch of charm.
Although Yang Xiaoyou preferred this fellow's maid outfit, this look seemed quite nice as well.
"Hehe, Master is quite considerate. A little drink won't hurt; after all, you’re the one supporting me," she said with a playful smile after taking a sip from her cup.
From her demeanor, one would think she was some noble lady, completely disconnected from any association with an assassin. It seemed she had put considerable effort into mastering the basics of support.
"Do as you wish. Sigh, it feels like a dream," Yang Xiaoyou said, resting his hands on the railing while gazing at the ominous aura gathering in the sky above the city. A hint of confusion flickered in his eyes.
This virus outbreak was closely tied to him; one action had indirectly led to such disastrous consequences, leaving him feeling somewhat conflicted.
However, since Sunshine Corporation's branch here was conducting research on such viruses, according to the wheels of history, it was only a matter of time before something went wrong. The numbers of Japan's Self-Defense Forces and Tokyo's population were significant vulnerabilities.
Moreover, judging by Takahashi Kiyoshi's tone, he must have become involved much earlier; there were likely hidden circumstances behind it all.
"The fate of Neon Cutter is none of my concern." After coming to this realization, Yang Xiaoyou relaxed.
If this were back home, he might have felt guilty for a while. However, since the outbreak occurred here, he quickly dismissed it and shifted his focus to Java Nation.
"Xiao You-kun, I truly must thank you for your kill. Here is an anonymous check for two hundred thousand One Million Dollars; it can be cashed at any bank." Just as Yang Xiaoyou was enjoying the sea breeze and relaxing, Shinoda Kenichi approached him from behind to fulfill his initial promise.
Seeing Yang Xiaoyou accept the check, many nearby looked on with envy. Many believed that if anyone had been in that situation when things suddenly went awry and had a gun in hand, they could have achieved that goal too; Yang Xiaoyou was merely lucky to have stumbled upon it.
A significant sum of money had unexpectedly come his way—two hundred thousand dollars. While it wasn't an enormous amount, for an ordinary student, it was certainly not insignificant. The Chinese Empire was now the world's leading economic entity, but due to the resistance from Western countries and the dissatisfaction of the old British Empire, the current international currency was firmly held by the dollar.
Although Britain hoped to establish the pound as the international currency, unfortunately, its economy, riddled with issues, no longer allowed for such aspirations.
"Not at all, it was just a coincidence. Why be so polite?" Yang Xiaoyou said graciously as he quickly accepted the check. After glancing at it to confirm its validity, a smile spread across his face.
The fellow in front of him truly deserved to be in his current position. Besides providing him with considerable benefits, it seemed that Nobunaga Hideyoshi and his associates had also received corresponding rewards. It was needless to say that their compensation would undoubtedly exceed what he had gained from this fortunate encounter.
Moreover, seemingly to counteract the impression left by his earlier harshness, the students and teachers present were also given gifts and red envelopes, which easily alleviated most people's dissatisfaction towards him.
In dire situations, even brothers might turn against each other; how much more so for students with only a casual relationship? Now with these benefits added in, many people's opinions of Shinoda Kenichi had greatly improved.
Yang Xiaoyou couldn't help but admire this fellow's insight. There was no doubt that if Nobunaga Hideyoshi and his group weren't present, those few slightly lecherous gunmen might have done something inappropriate towards the female students.
However, Shinoda Kenichi had managed to discern from Nobunaga Hideyoshi and Lucas's actions that they seemed intent on ensuring the safety of these students. To this end, he generously distributed gifts stored on the cruise ship to every student present in order to dispel any potential resentment.
For a leader of organized crime to go this far was indeed admirable.
His current position was certainly not achieved by mere luck.
In today's world, whether individuals, organizations, or nations, strength spoke volumes. With Nobunaga Hideyoshi and his group's power evident, Shinoda Kenichi presented himself as a friendly neighbor. As long as the balance of power remained intact, he would continue to maintain this amiable demeanor.
Of course, in light of recovering vitality afterward, he needed to rely on Hive Security's strength as well; otherwise, there would be no need for such somewhat ingratiating gestures.
This yacht was Shinoda Kenichi's private vessel, always docked and unaffected by the virus outbreak. The food supplies inside were ample, and there were plenty of clothes available. As a friendly neighbor figure, Shinoda Kenichi generously allowed the students to clean themselves up, washing away layers of grime along with the lingering stench of death and blood that clung to them.
On the yacht, one could occasionally spot other escapees' vessels in the vast waters of Tokyo Bay—fishing boats, sand dredgers, cargo ships, and cruise liners.
There was even a sighting of a corpse on a large cruise ship, which led to several survivors jumping into the sea. In such moments, the cold demeanor of the organized crime leader was evident.
There was no intention to rescue those who had fallen overboard; instead, the ship moved away from that area.
Both Yang Xiaoyou and Fia, who had begun to entertain malicious thoughts nearby, agreed with this course of action. After all, no one could guarantee that those in the water were not infected or that there wouldn't be a Licker appearing from that ship. If one were to pounce on them, it would spell disaster.
At that moment, a deep and powerful horn sounded from the entrance of Tokyo Bay leading to the ocean.
The silhouette of a massive vessel slowly emerged before everyone’s eyes.
The enormous hull exuded a metallic pressure akin to land, and the wide deck was filled with fully armed soldiers. Above the bridge, the flag of the Chinese Empire waved proudly.
"The rescue team has arrived. Hey, they coordinated quite quickly this time," Yang Xiaoyou remarked, a hint of an inexplicable expression crossing her face as she watched the Fujian aircraft carrier enter Tokyo Bay after unloading its planes.
