“Damn it! There are only two rooms!” Lucas exclaimed. “Although I don’t mind sharing with that Arab Sister, this room hasn’t been cleaned in centuries! I’d rather sleep in the car!” As he pushed open a decaying wooden door alongside Yang Xiaoyou and Shadow of Death, he was met with a shabby and filthy interior, prompting him to complain once more.
However, beneath his complaints, he quickly leaned in to whisper to the two beside him, “This town is definitely strange, but those drunks downstairs probably don’t share our objectives.”
After receiving nods of agreement from the two beside him, three other companions who had just finished their ‘greetings’ arrived at their door. They knocked symbolically before entering and closing the door behind them, causing the somewhat rotting wooden floor to creak underfoot.
Seeing the two researchers and the Arab Sister, Lucas couldn’t help but mutter a few unkind thoughts. If they were all staying here, wouldn’t that room next door be quite lively at night? The soundproofing here would surely be amusing.
Once inside, Afeifa, who looked somewhat displeased, spoke up. “Do you want to hear the good news or the bad news first?”
“Good news,” Lucas replied, slightly annoyed at being interrupted. He took a moment to size up the well-built Arab Sister with a teasing glint in his eye.
“Although the drunks downstairs are just ordinary patrons looking for leisure, there are only three rooms here. When we came up, one of the windows on the second floor was drawn shut. Clearly, those friends looking for relatives aren’t planning to stay with them. So, one of our targets might very well be on this floor.” The one who answered was the White-Clad Researcher known as ‘Assistant.’
Unlike his companion beside him who sported a beard typical of traditional Arabic men, he merely had some stubble on his face.
A hint of pride flashed across his face for discovering this information so quickly.
However, Kenna Town was merely one of their potential targets. Thus, it was impossible to ascertain what these outsiders were truly after; they could only suspect that there was something amiss.
At this moment, one advantage everyone had was that whether it was Black September or Mossad, they should be well aware of the intelligence capabilities of the United Arab Emirates. The fact that UAE’s intelligence agency managed to get wind of things so quickly must have caught them off guard.
Or perhaps from the very beginning, they had underestimated UAE’s intelligence system and only needed to pay attention to IA. It was evident that America’s relationship with Israel was far stronger than with UAE; the latter was merely a casual acquaintance. Therefore, with Mossad involved in operations, any whispers or movements would likely be ‘slightly’ delayed in reaching them.
“This is clearly bad news. Our objective is merely reconnaissance and information gathering; this unexpected variable has increased our workload.” Yang Xiaoyou interjected on behalf of the two others. After all, his value here revolved around intelligence and electronics. Such exchanges were naturally left to him.
Moreover, while that group of third-rate fellows couldn’t be confirmed as threats, Yang Xiaoyou had already sensed something amiss when stepping out of the car; he noticed hidden gazes directed at them.
He could almost guarantee that another group residing on this floor posed a problem.
“What you said is one of the bad news I wanted to convey. If they really are one of our targets, it wouldn’t be too bad if they were from an Arabic Liberation Organization; although we aren’t friendly, we’re not hostile either and there’s potential for communication. However, if it’s Mossad personnel… Given the recent assassination incidents between us both sides have no chance for compromise whatsoever. Their strength is certainly far superior to that of the Liberation Organization sustained by mere belief and willpower.” Afeifa spread her hands in a gesture of helplessness as she spoke.
Although the group of suspects was in the room next door on the same floor, handling the situation proved to be quite tricky. It was unexpected to encounter such highly suspicious individuals right after arriving in the target town and checking into the same hotel.
Initially, the plan was to reach the target, alleviate some travel fatigue, and gradually gather information from the locals about recent strange occurrences.
Clearly, this unexpected situation disrupted their original plans.
As for calling for reinforcements, neither the personnel from Hive Security Company nor the three agents from that side were willing to agree. For Hive Security Company, calling for backup immediately upon arrival without having engaged with anything would damage their company image. Such intangible assets are difficult to establish but easy to destroy.
For the three official agents, it would also raise doubts about their capabilities among their superiors, especially since they were not yet in a dangerous situation.
"This time we are merely accepting your commission; the final arrangements and requirements still need your determination. However, we reserve the right to withdraw if we believe we are facing an irresistible crisis. Of course, you can allow us to operate freely, but in that case, you will only have advisory rights regarding our actions, and you will need to comply with our arrangements," Yang Xiaoyou stated decisively after assessing the current situation.
Now that one group of suspected opponents had appeared, this risk was still well within the capabilities of Lucas and Shadow of Death.
Perhaps if the mission were too simple, it would fail to reflect their true value.
"Since you understand that you are hiring us, you must follow my command from now on. I am the highest authority for this mission. I have heard much about your reputation at Hive Security Company; I hope you won't let me down," said the 'Doctor,' who had remained silent until now, sporting a circle of black beard. He seemed quite confident in his ability to take charge.
Hearing such words made Yang Xiaoyou shrug without expressing any dissent, though Heart couldn't help but sigh inwardly.
Perhaps their intentions were good; they wanted to send elite-level agents to participate in the mission together. However, it was clear that someone who had been in charge for too long would not easily accept being relegated to a secondary role.
"Our room is well-known among us, and there are only three rooms on this floor. This means that if they occupy one more room, there can be at most four people. Even if there are four people trying not to leave anyone alone, they can pair up in rooms. The most likely scenario is that they have only two or three people while we have four combat personnel. If you truly possess the rumored strength, I believe we can test them right now," the Doctor said confidently about his and his partner's abilities after confirming their numerical advantage.
Seeing their eagerness made Yang Xiaoyou feel somewhat speechless about the intelligence system of the United Arab Emirates. Perhaps due to sharing some data with IA, they had grown complacent.
While their analysis was reasonable and could not be dismissed outright, direct confrontation was definitely not a priority choice for intelligence agents.
Moreover, if Lucas and Shadow of Death were indeed on par with them...
Yang Xiaoyou had always wondered where this confidence from these fellows came from. Perhaps it was a side effect of frequently engaging in favorable battles with IA personnel; they might think themselves no worse than those elite agents they interacted with.
"There's no trouble in sneaking through the eaves outside the window. You two go that way to prevent any sudden situations that might let them escape through the window. I'll confirm the identity of the 'assistant' face-to-face. Don't fire before we both are ready." With that, the 'Doctor' pulled out a modified .lr caliber Smith & Wesson handgun from his pocket.
It was clear that a caliber handgun was more suitable for agents like them, and judging by the shape of the silencer, it seemed to be a custom-made product.
On the other side, the 'assistant' also drew a similar handgun and chambered it.
Just as the 'Doctor' mentioned the window, Lucas and Shadow of Death exchanged glances, their expressions shifting slightly as they both looked out the window, then shared a knowing smile.
While the 'Doctor' continued his lengthy explanation, they quickly signaled each other with a Tactic gesture.
As soon as the 'Doctor' finished speaking, Lucas suddenly lunged forward, crashing into Yang Xiaoyou and bursting through the door.
Meanwhile, Shadow of Death seemed to transform into a ghost, appearing at the doorway ahead of them. He fired a shot with his Silver Pistol in what appeared to be a casual manner towards one direction in the corridor.
"Bang!"
The thunderous sound of the .50 caliber echoed through the old building, causing some dust to fall from the ceiling. Yet, his hand holding the gun showed no signs of shaking.
At that moment, a strange gray sphere flew in through the window and instantly exploded into a thick cloud of white smoke.
