The neighboring town to Kenna Town appeared somewhat desolate due to a loss of labor, but its accommodation conditions were indeed superior. Although it could not compare to the city, it ensured cleanliness and tidiness.
For safety reasons, the four of them shared the same room—a combination of three men and one woman—yet nothing strange occurred.
Having faced an attack, even Lucas had entered a state of combat readiness.
However, during their rest, an incident still unfolded. The inn's owner reported them to the police due to their mixed-gender arrangement.
An elderly officer knocked on their door, and in a tense moment, he was met with the dark muzzle of a gun as he entered, prompting him to drop to the ground with his hands over his head, pleading for mercy.
This left everyone present speechless. After confirming the officer's identity, Afifah successfully led him aside and whispered something to him.
Though the specifics were unknown, after her persuasion, they were no longer disturbed by the police.
In this state of rest, just as dawn broke, they set off again towards the gravel road they had traversed before.
Throughout the night, the gentleman holding the satellite phone—the "Doctor"—had not sent any messages.
After another hour's drive, when the Hummer SUV arrived back at Kenna Town, the blazing sun had begun to unleash its energy with abandon.
The air above the engine hood, heated like a hot iron, shimmered with distortion as they looked into the town. There were no signs of life on the farm now.
The tavern that had suffered partial damage on the second floor yesterday now displayed a "Closed for Business" sign, resembling something out of a Western.
Due to the owner's situation, they had no intention of going inside to call for anyone. Instead, Afifah took out a walkie-talkie and adjusted it before calling inside.
The walkie-talkie worked in conjunction with the vehicle's line and had a coverage range of five kilometers. In this area without a signal base station, it allowed for high-frequency communication. The satellite phone could directly connect them to the outside world, perfectly complementing each other.
However, unexpectedly, all that came through the walkie-talkie was static; there was no response from inside despite Afifah's repeated calls.
After three or four attempts without any reply, an ominous thought began to rise in everyone's hearts.
"Seriously? After what happened yesterday, do those people dare show up again?" Lucas frowned at this point. Undoubtedly, if those two troublesome fellows were truly in trouble, it would make things easier for them. However, one unfortunate aspect was that their mission evaluation would likely suffer.
With this thought in mind, they quickly approached the tavern displaying the closed sign and began knocking persistently.
During the knocking process, Shadow of Death quickly scanned the surroundings, using the railing of the awning at the entrance for cover. With two agile leaps, he cleanly landed on the eaves outside the second-floor window.
After confirming the situation, he directly slipped into the room where everyone had started. Not long after, he poked his head out from an adjacent room, his expression dark as he shook his head.
When Shadow of Death opened the door from inside to let everyone in, he remarked, "The entire tavern is empty; there isn't a single person around."
As a few of them ascended the stairs, the wooden steps creaked under their weight.
After leading them to a room and preparing to search for clues separately, Afifah deduced from the habits of the two that neither the Doctor nor the Assistant had stayed here.
"Did they find another cleaner place to stay? After we left yesterday, they should have gone to investigate some more," Afifah said, her face slightly pale. Typically, her missions involved gathering intelligence from specific individuals.
Her purpose for joining this team was not only to facilitate communication with local residents but also to focus on the three members of Hive Security Company. Now that two key combatants had lost contact, she felt a sense of unease creeping in.
"Although those two can be a bit reckless, it doesn't make sense for them to go missing at a time like this. From yesterday's reaction, that Doctor's abilities were quite impressive; there's no way he wouldn't have been able to send a warning. If it were just a walkie-talkie that no one answered, that would be one thing, but even the satellite phone—ugh," she thought. Two capable individuals had seemingly vanished without a trace, and now even the tavern's owner was missing. This was certainly not a good sign.
Just then, static crackled through the walkie-talkie as if someone had suddenly connected in. Afifah's spirit jolted at the sound.
However, after a while, apart from the static noise, no other sounds came through.
Only Yang Xiaoyou furrowed her brow upon hearing this noise and then changed her expression as she said, "Quick! Try the satellite phone."
Before Yang Xiaoyou could finish her sentence, several dull 'bangs' echoed from outside. As soon as the sounds rang out, Lucas seemed to transform into a black panther, darting out of the window like lightning.
The others quickly rushed to the window to look outside and noticed an off-road vehicle parked in the shadow of the building across from them. Its four tires were emitting black smoke as Lucas reached the front of the car and began inspecting it before loudly complaining.
“**!”
Lucas was incredibly fast; he arrived at the scene just seconds after hearing the noise but still found no sign of the perpetrator. It was clear that something had been set up in advance with a delay mechanism.
Upon seeing what was happening outside and recalling Yang Xiaoyou's earlier warning, Afifah nervously pulled out her satellite phone and pressed a few buttons randomly. However, when she held it to her ear, her face turned even paler.
"I can't... I can't get through. The satellite signal here is blocked. I just tried contacting the Doctor not long ago."
Meanwhile, Yang Xiaoyou maintained a serious expression as she set down her backpack and opened her laptop. She plugged in a strange device into one of its ports and began typing rapidly on the keyboard to input filtering types.
Upon seeing the chaotic waveform on the computer, Yang Xiaoyou spoke up, "It's human interference; the satellite communication bands have been blocked. Although the walkie-talkies are experiencing some static, they should still be usable. Additionally, there are other encrypted communication frequencies present here."
Just as Yang Xiaoyou reached this conclusion, Lucas entered the room with a grim expression after checking the surroundings.
"Is there any way to directly eavesdrop on their conversation?"
"The equipment is limited and will take time. I estimate it's not going to work; they've just switched frequencies again." Yang Xiaoyou sighed after rapidly typing on the keyboard for a while.
To be honest, he carried a bag symbolically but never truly believed he would need it. He was confident that his skills were not much worse than those of other professionals, but without specialized eavesdropping equipment, relying solely on a multi-purpose device to decrypt was insufficient to cope with the frequent changes from the other side.
With the tires destroyed and communications cut off, it was clear they were trapped in this town.
Under the blazing sun and with little preparation, trekking twenty-five kilometers through the scorching desert was quite a daunting task.
"Well, the good news is that their continuous efforts against us clearly indicate we've come to the right place. That's something to celebrate," Yang Xiaoyou quipped as he closed down the computer.
"Of course, the bad news is also evident. They seem quite unfriendly towards us. Besides facing Mossad and possibly members of the Liberation Organization that we encountered last time, we might have other troubles to deal with."
Zombies had already appeared near their home, and after much effort to secure food, was this truly the end of the world?
