With a soft 'thud', a wooden board nailed to the window was forcefully removed by Lucas and placed on the floor. He then turned his attention to the wooden board below.
To minimize noise, Lucas was careful as he took down the board. Through the gap it left, he could see that the adjacent room was just one person away on this floor.
The window across was also boarded up, but due to the angle between the two buildings, the eaves of the farmhouse they were in blocked most of the view from the front. This was one of the reasons they had chosen this building.
If they were to forcibly enter the building in front, the noise they made could easily alert those in the 'laboratory' next door. Finding this buffer zone required nearly the same amount of effort but offered a much safer alternative.
"What escape route are you preparing?" Hakim asked as he watched Lucas remove the last of the boards. "It’s fine while we’re sneaking in, but if they suddenly attack inside, it could draw attention from outside. After all, there are guards at their entrance."
"We can use their own escape route," Yang Xiaoyou replied casually. "In such a critical environment, there’s at least a seventy percent chance of having an underground escape passage. Plus, with our ability to quietly take them out, we have a good chance of escaping safely. With you all joining us, our odds have increased even more."
Hakim glanced thoughtfully at the agent girl who casually tied her shirt at her chest, revealing a healthy expanse of skin and her navel. However, he didn’t say anything further.
Noticing Hakim's gaze, Yang Xiaoyou exchanged a meaningful look with Palm, who was injured and seemed somewhat dissatisfied as he looked at Shadow of Death. They both shared a strange smile that resembled two cunning foxes.
"Alright, I’ll go handle that camera first. Wait for me," Yang Xiaoyou said as she removed the last wooden board and slipped out with agility, grabbing her backpack.
"There’s a camera here?" Lucas’s expression turned serious.
"There’s a high probability of one being on the other side of the eaves. Initially, we planned to risk crossing over from the second floor roof. If she can handle it, then we might have a chance to quietly bypass it from behind," Hakim said while watching Yang Xiaoyou maneuver like a nimble monkey. She twisted her body into an odd position; her lower half remained on this side while her upper half leaned over to navigate around and manipulate a connecting wire on the computer.
This maneuver looked simple enough for someone with above-average flexibility, but it was risky since they couldn’t directly monitor the camera on the other side. A slight tremor in her fingers could easily cast a shadow within its range. Achieving what she did required not only boldness and meticulousness but also confidence in her own deductions.
Having seemingly finished her task, Yang Xiaoyou turned back and began typing rapidly on the computer while still holding onto the connecting wire with her mouth.
After about half a minute of typing, she made a 'K' gesture to them; the footage from that blind spot camera had been locked in place. On the screen, they could only see an unchanging scene, unable to detect any new intruders.
Just as they began to pass through this building from behind, Heartwing stepped silently on the red tiles and was nearing their destination when suddenly loud noises erupted from the direction of the 'laboratory'.
With a loud bang, the outer wall of the warehouse, which had replaced the 'laboratory,' was blasted open, and a bloodied man in a white coat flew out from within.
The commotion attracted the attention of the 'farmers' outside, who rushed towards the entrance without hesitation. However, it seemed they encountered immense resistance at the door, with some being thrown back out occasionally.
The townspeople trying to enter through the gaping hole faced similar challenges; due to their vantage point, they couldn't see the situation clearly.
Yet, from the side of the blasted opening, fleeting glimpses of a crimson figure could be seen.
"Damn it! It's a mysterious creature known as the Licker! A powerful new Virus Carrier. It may not be as terrifying as rumored, but its numbers and frequency of appearance are much higher! I haven't detected any traces of them here; did they escape due to a failed experiment? I still don't have detailed parameters on them," Hakim exclaimed to everyone upon spotting the crimson figure.
The two members of Mossad and Afifah displayed expressions of shock.
"Truly impressive for someone responsible for the H Virus as a United Nations Commissioner; you are indeed a professional in this aspect. We haven't even obtained first-hand data on this new type," said Jimmy, one of the Mossad agents who had lost a finger, expressing his astonishment.
However, before he could finish, Lucas took over the conversation.
"The Licker's hind leg muscles far exceed those in its forelegs, giving it exceptional jumping ability. Yet its forelimbs and claws are even more developed. Its overall appearance is quite grotesque; while it has jumping prowess, its running on flat ground resembles that of a lizard—awkward at best. On open terrain, it only runs about one and a half to two times faster than an average person. In narrow spaces, its jumping lethality is maximized; its sharp claws ensure climbing capability while its tongue can rival a bullet in speed. However, they lack vision."
As Lucas laid out both abilities and weaknesses, those who had just felt their hearts race now wore expressions of disbelief and skepticism.
"Let me reintroduce myself: Hive Core Member, Lucas." Noticing their expressions, Lucas flashed a bright smile to gain their trust. He had already encountered such creatures back in Tokyo.
If Hakim was the data specialist, then he and his team were experts in dealing with them.
"From the Licker's movements, it seems they're merely trying to prevent these fellows from entering. If it were their true nature, they would have already jumped out and gone on a killing spree. For these Infected Entities with brute strength, Lickers hold an unparalleled advantage. Hmm, it appears they have indeed made their move." Observing the Licker's behavior pattern, Yang Xiaoyou spoke calmly while others were still processing Lucas's information, her eyes glinting with an unusual light.
"Do you mean to say that!" Upon hearing his words, Hakim's expression turned serious, as if he had realized something.
He then changed his expression and leaped towards the laboratory, shouting, "Get over here quickly!"
Almost immediately behind him, Yang Xiaoyou also dashed forward without hesitation. Although the situation below seemed fraught with danger, it was relatively balanced and safe.
The Licker needed to hold back the enraged townspeople, which had limited their movements. Meanwhile, the townsfolk were blocked outside, creating a vacuum of balance inside. The resistance they encountered would be at its peak.
If their confidence in navigating the underground passage was initially at seventy percent, it had now risen to a hundred.
If they didn't act now, that mysterious fellow inside would take the data they wanted and successfully seal off their escape route. Staying here would eventually lead them to be discovered by the increasingly tight security. The townspeople, who had been diverted by the Mossad Captain, were now coming one after another.
Remaining in place might seem safe, but the risks far outweighed the chance of rushing in for a gamble.
Without a doubt, attacking the laboratory at this moment—especially with the Licker blocking the entrance—was not merely a result of an experiment gone wrong. It indicated that an organization had caught wind of the situation and sent someone to collect data on this mutated virus!
Seeing Yang Xiaoyou follow him in and Hakim already crashing through the window, the others present no longer hesitated.
January was approaching, and it was time to get to work; updates would likely be scheduled for the evening. As for Divine Horse's timing, that would have to be seen later. Regrettably.
