On a highland, outside a house almost completely covered in snow, Yang Xiaoyou gazed at the faint red glow in the distance and couldn't help but sigh.
In the face of a virus more virulent than ever before, the proportion of people able to escape from this northern town was likely far lower than the numbers from Kapa City and Tokyo.
Thinking about Hades, who had perished here, weighed heavily on Yang Xiaoyou's heart.
Having gained some residual memories of body control from his inner persona and the enhancements brought about by mental combat experience, he would inevitably see an overall improvement once his injuries healed. However, this did not excite him much.
With his unique physique, these gains would come in time, but Hades—one of the Elders who had been with Hive Security Company since its inception—was already gone.
The biting cold wind stirred, causing Yang Xiaoyou's clothes to flutter. The distant howls of wolves mixed with the snowstorm added an eerie atmosphere to the environment.
"Mr. Yang! We're here to take over. You really shouldn't assign yourself night watch duties when your health is at stake," said two hunters as they stepped out of the Hunter's Lodge, which had just been opened.
Throughout their journey, Yang Xiaoyou's performance had deeply impressed both of them. The Hunter's Lodge, originally belonging to those unfortunate souls who had perished, had become their new resting point.
After replenishing their food supplies, most of the weary group soon fell into a deep sleep.
"It's fine; I just wanted to calm down for a moment. Alright, I'll leave this to you," Yang Xiaoyou said with a sigh, seemingly having come to a realization. He then allowed the two hunters to take over his position.
The most important thing now was still to leave this icy expanse.
Although there was no longer a threat from Corpses behind them, the ice field itself was fraught with danger given their lack of preparation.
The early warning Radar Station set up by Denmark in Greenland was located two hundred kilometers away from Nuuk. While this distance might seem like just a short drive between two cities under normal circumstances—taking only two or three hours on a highway—it became a daunting trek across an ice field filled with peril when traveling on foot.
Fortunately, the two local hunters had a deep understanding of the ice fields. Yang Xiaoyou had a solid foundation here as well, having caught two snow foxes along the way to supplement their supplies. Combined with the food they had originally collected, they barely managed to maintain a balance.
Three hours had passed, yet they had covered less than a third of the journey.
While they could still scrape by with their food supplies, the low temperatures of crossing the ice fields and the exhaustion from physical exertion were significant burdens for most of the group, including Yang Xiaoyou, who had not fully recovered from injuries.
In such an environment, Yang Xiaoyou found it impossible to rest properly; at most, she could ensure her condition did not worsen.
Fortunately, everyone was equipped with gear intended for their expedition to the ice fields. They had fled without time to change, and this equipment helped compensate for their lack of stamina and experience.
Even so, most of them were suffering from varying degrees of frostbite on their fingers.
The power of nature displayed a pressure that was entirely different from the threat posed by corpses.
After three hours, they reached a detour route that brought them closer to the interior peak of Greenland. At this point, however, the temperature here was significantly lower than outside—at least twenty to thirty degrees below zero. Such low temperatures created immense pressure even for those adequately equipped.
"Everyone, push yourselves! This section is the coldest. Once we get past that gorge in the middle and start moving toward the shore, the temperature will gradually rise. We need to get through here as quickly as possible," the two hunters began to rally everyone's spirits.
However, they themselves were already panting heavily; even during their hunts, they rarely ventured into such regions.
Just then, Yang Xiaoyou suddenly raised her hand, signaling everyone to stop. It seemed she was listening intently for something.
But aside from the howling wind and snow, no one else heard anything.
Considering Yang Xiaoyou's performance along the way, their faces turned even paler. At this moment, even Qian Kai and Zhang Liang were severely drained.
As a victim, Yang Xiaoyou felt the weight of the situation even more. The entire team's combat effectiveness had plummeted to zero, and they would likely have to rely heavily on those few weapons.
Not long after, Yang Xiaoyou turned her head in a certain direction, and at that moment, a faint sound began to reach everyone's ears.
Amidst the dim wind and snow, some shadows gradually emerged.
The buzzing sound grew closer.
As the shadows approached, it became clear that they resembled searchlights, similar to car headlights, while the buzzing noise was the roar of engines!
A large snowmobile, designed for movement in glacial regions and resembling a skateboard with no wheels, appeared faintly before them.
In front of it were four dual-rider snowmobiles clearing the way. Not only that, but the continuous sound coming from behind the snowmobile indicated that the scale of this group far exceeded that of Yang Xiaoyou and her companions.
The leading snowmobiles seemed to have noticed these somewhat discordant outsiders, and two of them immediately turned around and glided toward Yang Xiaoyou's group.
As they got closer, it became possible to see the emblem of Denmark emblazoned on the front of the two snowmobiles. Although the people on them were bundled up tightly, it was clear they had firearms slung across their backs.
"Are you survivors from Nuuk? This is Denmark's Defense Third Battalion," one of them called out. The tour guide excitedly translated this message, causing an overwhelming wave of emotion among those present; at that moment, no sound could be more beautiful than this.
They arrived at the central command vehicle, where a robust-looking commander in his fifties with graying hair did not put on any airs. He offered everyone warm coffee before beginning to inquire about the changes in Nuuk.
The tragedy that had unfolded in Nuuk had been communicated at the onset of its outbreak. However, such circumstances had completely sealed off rescue routes, forcing them to rent a U.S. military satellite for reconnaissance.
Subsequently, the team originally stationed at Radar Station was dispatched as part of the first rescue mission.
Additionally, the Kingdom of Denmark had requested assistance from the United States and the United Kingdom, hoping they would dispatch large naval vessels to provide aid using helicopters.
Faced with the chilling presence of the Cannibal Monsters, everyone present felt a deep sense of dread and began to chatter among themselves.
The commander, who had gathered a general understanding of the situation from the tour guide, furrowed his brow deeply.
If what they said was true, then sending their small number of troops would likely be futile.
The several outbreaks of the H Virus, especially during the Clean-Up operations following the Tokyo Incident, had provided many military personnel with tactics for dealing with Corpses.
With enough ammunition, a battalion could attempt a Clean-Up, but it was clear that this location only housed a garrison for the Radar Station. Their ammunition reserves did not meet such demands.
While they might have had an advantage in the early stages, it would be impossible to sustain it. If the rumored high-level infected were to attack, the pressure would be immense.
Moreover, according to their accounts, this virus seemed even more virulent than the one encountered in Tokyo. This only added to the commander’s headaches.
It was fortunate that they hadn’t gone yet; if they did and brought the virus back with them, it could lead to even greater destruction.
"What caused your injury?" At that moment, the commander turned to Yang Xiaoyou and began to inquire.
Although he felt a flush of embarrassment, as a soldier, he knew he had to ask clearly. If there was a chance of carrying the virus out, the consequences would be unimaginable.
He had already made up his mind: regardless of how the injured youth responded, he would need to detain him for observation for a while. The others could be sent back to base first; it was better to keep this one under close watch during their operations.
Clearly, Yang Xiaoyou would not want to venture back into that town from which they had so narrowly escaped alongside these Danish soldiers.
He then tilted his head slightly, signaling to the Male Tour Guide.
Under the influence of Yang Xiaoyou's relentless persuasion during any spare moment, the guide quickly caught the attention of the commander.
"What?! What is your father's name?"
The commander, who had initially been contemplating detaining Yang Xiaoyou, displayed a look of shock and disbelief upon hearing the words from the tour guide who called himself Fortland.
"Joaquim Holger Waldemar Christian. He is my father. If you encounter any trouble in the future, you can seek help from the Danish Military. I don’t really know the specifics," the guide replied honestly, following Yang Xiaoyou's instructions.
"Still alive? I can't believe His Highness is still alive. Sigh, back then... Where is His Highness now? Has he been well all these years?" After hearing Fortland's words, the commander momentarily set aside his questions about Yang Xiaoyou and spoke nostalgically to the guide.
Joaquim Holger Waldemar Christian, the second son of the current Danish Queen, was a legendary figure known to those of an older generation, even if younger military personnel had lost track of him due to political reasons.
If it weren't for his existence, Greenland and the Faroe Islands might no longer belong to the kingdom. He was responsible for revitalizing the decaying Danish military.
Unfortunately, due to marital issues, this likely future king of Denmark had left the kingdom with his beloved, living incognito and out of touch.
His wife had half Chinese Hong Kong heritage, and upon hearing Yang Xiaoyou and her companions' "identity introduction," the commander couldn't help but believe most of it.
The details that were inadvertently revealed by them perfectly matched what he knew.
Due to prohibitions from above, even young people within his own country were largely unaware of these matters; clearly, these tourists had no such coincidental conditions.
"My father passed away last year. His ashes were taken by my mother to Hong Kong. They came this time wanting to take me with them, but I thought I’d take this opportunity to enjoy some sightseeing here. Was my father really such a big figure? But they never told me," said the guide, who had been brainwashed by Yang Xiaoyou along the way and was now fully immersed in his role.
After hearing these words, the commander couldn't help but sigh, and then he began to explain in detail.
"Alright, you have a point. If it really is the Virulent Virus, then you three should be showing symptoms by now. It seems you are indeed fine. Additionally, there has been a Transport Aircraft parked at the Radar Station airport. I will arrange for someone to take you there, and then you can fly directly out of the country. Don't blame your grandmother; the Queen has regretted this for many years. But remember, keep an eye on His Highness the Grand Prince. However, rest assured that as long as you are on military territory, even His Highness the Grand Prince won't be able to do anything to you." With such a significant flag raised, the commander was surprisingly accommodating.
Even Yang Xiaoyou and the others didn't make any demands; they were ready to be sent off the island as quickly as possible.
The commander knew that if it truly was such a virulent virus, even if Nuuk was successfully suppressed, all of Greenland would likely be under lockdown for quite some time.
Moreover, the kingdom was preparing to use this opportunity to tighten its control over Greenland and would certainly make a big deal out of it. Since this involved Prince Joachim's offspring, they had to ensure their safe departure.
Although he didn't particularly like the relatives of the woman who had taken away His Highness, it was undeniable that she was indeed His Highness's beloved. For His Highness's sake, he decided to escort the royal grandson out safely, especially since it would be difficult for him to allocate more personnel from his side.
"Oh dear, how can we accept that? It seems like your snowmobiles are a bit insufficient," Yang Xiaoyou said on behalf of Fortland, though she pretended to feel embarrassed.
However, her actions showed no sign of hesitation; while others were still discussing matters, she was already asking for tools.
Hearing such unreserved words made the commander's mouth twitch slightly, but he still waved his hand to arrange for his Royal Guard to go out and make preparations.
It was indeed best for them to leave as quickly as possible. According to their information, the chances of survivors appearing in Nuuk were quite slim, so taking a little longer wouldn't matter much.
