Chapter 527: Unexpected Developments
"A premeditated kidnapping? A skilled operation that leaves no trace? Hurry, merge those two cases together. I don't want to get caught in the crossfire of these big shots fighting; just give the other side an explanation," the newly appointed Police Chief said, feeling a wave of despair wash over him after hearing about yet another case from his subordinates. Then, a flash of inspiration struck him.
The case in the suburbs involved the Common Unity Party and illegal firearms, making it politically sensitive. The public narrative was vague, and ordinary citizens were unaware of the true nature of the situation.
Despite this, as the local police chief, he felt immense pressure. This position seemed cursed; in recent years, several police chiefs had come and gone, as if some inexplicable event occurred every few months.
He had thought he was lucky to take office after so many unpredictable incidents had already happened, believing he could enjoy a period of calm. Little did he know, he too could not escape this curse.
Now that he had grasped a lifeline, he immediately mobilized nearly all available police forces, even calling in traffic officers to conduct a thorough investigation into the second case, which had some leads.
The first case was too risky to pursue; any fallout could cost him his position or even his life! The second case, while still significant due to the kidnapping of an Honorary Marquis, posed less pressure since a marquis was merely a title and not a high-ranking official.
If he could solve one case while addressing another, he would come out ahead! This was his last chance for redemption!
As orders were dispatched, the entire Z City began to stir.
"Tsk tsk, with such commotion, are they using yesterday's group as scapegoats? What a tragic bunch; they have decent skills but lack internal channels for information and chose such a poor time," Yang Xiaoyou mused as she watched police cars rush by from her window. A hint of intrigue flickered in her eyes.
Initially thinking that group was made up of Radicals, it now seemed otherwise. Otherwise, with their current capabilities, they wouldn't be used as scapegoats.
"Where did this strange group come from? Oh well, having them draw some attention isn't bad," she shrugged after scratching her head. Her gaze swept over the few individuals still devouring food in her home.
Yesterday, they had taken advantage of the Virtual Docking System to train for an entire day. She hadn't monitored them during dinner, and they nearly wrecked her house.
After tasting the sweet results of their training, even the more rational ones among them had become obsessed with it.
Having just completed their biggest test, now seemed like a time for relaxation. Yang Xiaoyou wanted to hang out with Menglu and Feng Lin but decided it was best to avoid Qi Qiusheng for a while due to yesterday's misfortune.
With everything in the Middle East proceeding methodically, this summer should be relatively quiet. If these fellows didn’t leave soon, she could train them well and include Zhang Liang in some experiments to complete all testing adjustments in the short term.
Uh-oh. Since this involved electronics and her seemingly god-like abilities in virtual space—though Laiwei had been personally trained by her—she doubted herself at times and thought she might have used some cheating program against Laiwei.
Dealing with such oblivious fellows left Yang Xiaoyou feeling somewhat helpless.
Lucas seemed to have some doubts, but he just didn't voice them.
"Hmm?" Just as Yang Xiaoyou was about to step inside to practice with everyone, he heard a slight noise from the balcony. It seemed like something was happening at the neighbor's house across the way.
But that place had clearly been bought by the Silver-Haired Princess, and she should still be under house arrest. There was no way she could be out here.
Given the relationship between their parents, both sides would likely want to avoid meeting each other as much as possible.
"Uh, has the room that's been unoccupied for a long time been targeted?" After a fleeting thought crossed his mind, Yang Xiaoyou moved a couple of steps toward the balcony and prepared to step onto the railing to jump over.
However, just as his foot landed on the balcony railing, a figure stealthily emerged from the adjacent balcony. Seeing that Yang Xiaoyou was completely silent and not giving off any presence, he was clearly startled.
Then, his expression darkened as he suddenly lunged toward Yang Xiaoyou with force, attempting to pin him down by crossing the gap between them.
But with a light sidestep, Yang Xiaoyou easily avoided him. The assailant fell to the ground with a thud, clearly taking quite a hit.
Despite this, he reacted quickly. Ignoring the blood trickling from his nose, he propped himself up with one hand and drew a spring knife with the other, pressing it against Yang Xiaoyou's neck. His eyes glinted with malice as he spoke in a fierce tone.
"Shut up if you don't want to die. We don't want to kill anyone, but we fear trouble even more. As long as you behave yourself, we might let you go later. Hmm, you should be a student or someone preparing for this college entrance exam? With such a long break, it won't delay you for too long. We know from our investigation that you're the only one living here."
Clearly, this agile young man had decent observational skills.
After scrutinizing Yang Xiaoyou for a moment, he reached his conclusion. From his words, it seemed they had scouted this area multiple times and were well aware of the living conditions nearby.
"Uh, interesting. So are those police cars outside looking for you? Is this your hideout? Instead of hiding in the suburbs, you've chosen to conceal yourselves right in the city—quite an impressive choice." Facing the spring knife pressed against his neck, Yang Xiaoyou appeared unfazed and looked at him with curiosity.
"Shut up! Knowing too much won't do you any good! Hmph! I see you're studying hard; don't make things worse for yourself!" Upon hearing Yang Xiaoyou's words, the young man's expression darkened even further as he growled lowly.
He then raised his hand and struck down on the balcony railing with a knife-hand strike, creating a fine crack and causing visible damage below—a striking visual impact.
"You idiot! He's clearly testing you! Damn it, get him over here!" At that moment, another figure emerged from their side of the balcony. His face was smeared with some strange paint that gave him an edgy appearance. It was obvious he had come out to check on the commotion but hadn't expected such an incident to occur.
However, that student across was already part of their kidnapping plan. After all, living in such close quarters with so many people made it difficult to keep their activities hidden from neighbors. The lower floors were also rented out rooms; there were plenty of issues down there as well.
They had done this kind of thing before; each time they successfully obtained the ransom they desired. For these nobles, death was their greatest fear; they usually preferred to settle matters privately.
But who would have thought they had unknowingly offended some powerful entity? What had started off smoothly suddenly hit a snag at the last moment—the entire city's police force swarmed out like they had stirred up a hornet's nest.
An Honorary Marquis, nothing more than that; not a real power player!
When the young man, smeared with strange paint, caught sight of Yang Xiaoyou's appearance, he seemed slightly surprised. Wasn't this the boy from the hall yesterday? He had caused quite a commotion and attracted a lot of attention.
However, it was clearly not the time to dwell on that. The fellow had somehow figured out their identities, which posed a problem.
It was one thing for him to alter his appearance, but one of his companions had been recognized.
Before he could react further, Yang Xiaoyou innocently remarked, "What does that have to do with me? Do you think I wanted to see you troublemakers?"
"Heh, so what if I don't want to see you? You're all alone at home, so, uh..." The young man initially intended to mock him but was interrupted by the sounds coming from inside the house. It seemed a woman was complaining about not having enough food and had snatched something from someone else.
Hearing such noises made his mouth twitch uncontrollably. He decided this place would be a good spot to lay low. The fact that a single student on break lived next door was already a significant factor, but now even that seemed problematic. Could all the unexpected events not converge at once?
"Hey? Are those people outside your neighbors? That's odd; your neighbors seem to visit in a strange way." As Laiwei's voice fell, she emerged holding a large bowl of Ramen and spotted the three peculiar figures on the balcony wielding spring knives. She blinked in confusion.
Bai and Foreman were exhausted from their trip to the countryside.
