There was a fellow named Trouble, who, despite being disliked by everyone, often found himself in people's company. However, when Lin Yi and the others ventured to rescue Douglas, they never anticipated how significant his role would become. Yet for Lin Yi and his group, Slo was hardly a welcomed presence.
"Where is Slo now?" Lin Yi suddenly felt a bit weary; it seemed that things were always veering off course.
"He’s in the next room. His left arm was torn off by a Zombie," Li Qiweng explained softly as she looked at Lin Yi. At that moment, he was her top priority; everything else was secondary.
Upon hearing this, Lin Yi was taken aback. "Doesn't that mean he’s infected with the virus?"
"We weren't planning to help him at all. He managed to crawl onto our helicopter with just one arm. In the end, it was Ika who couldn't bear to see him suffer and bandaged him up, injecting him with Serum," Witerson II said while glancing at Ika. Everyone was aware that Lin Yi had Serum on hand. As the captain, he had to demonstrate his value to his teammates, and Serum was certainly something that could capture their attention. However, Lin Yi believed that the reason these people followed him was largely due to his sincerity. What others thought was beyond his concern.
"So what’s our current situation?" Lin Yi suddenly remembered that most of them were not officially recognized; why would a nation's capital allow them to remain unscathed?
Pachy stepped forward. Although he didn’t fully agree with Lin Yi being the leader of this group, he lacked ambition and thus had little desire for conflict.
"We’ve already contacted Mr. Li. Our identities have been officially recognized. According to the United Nations' Order 0901, everyone has a responsibility to protect any area accessible by human feet from disturbance. In other words, as long as we resist Zombies, we won’t be disturbed by official forces and will even receive their support. Therefore, our entire Mercenary team has been recognized by this country, provided we actively resist Zombie incursions," Pachy quickly explained to Lin Yi.
Suddenly, Lin Yi felt an inexplicable sense of reassurance—a feeling of being acknowledged. Recently, he had felt abandoned by the world; it seemed that apart from Wen, no one could recognize him. Now, not just him but his entire team had received recognition—this was undoubtedly a joyous occasion.
"Alright, let’s go out for a stroll. I've been lying down for too long; it's time to stretch my legs," Lin Yi said, feeling invigorated; the pain in his body had become trivial.
Li Qiweng worried about Lin Yi's injuries but seeing his excitement made her fetch the clothes she had prepared for him earlier.
The long-awaited sunlight bathed Lin Yi and his companions as satisfaction radiated from their faces; everything felt so peaceful in this haven. There were no endless Zombies or relentless escapes. If you were to ask Lin Yi about his current ideal life, it would simply be to quietly bask in the sun with Li Qiweng.
At that moment, Lin Yi toyed with a piece of bright orange gold—a piece he had asked for when he heard Jiao Jiao and the others had acquired a large stash of it. Lin Yi considered himself quite generous and wasn’t particularly obsessed with money. However, when he first saw so much gleaming gold, he couldn’t resist picking up a piece; it felt impossible to let go.
As a capital city, Addis Ababa was still quite prosperous. Shops lined both sides of the wide streets; it seemed that the Zombie crisis hadn’t affected the lives of those here at all. Yet one could still sense an underlying unease among the hurried pedestrians. Normally, this area would be bustling with noise; now even though the sun shone warmly, it couldn’t dispel the chill in people’s hearts.
Most people around were traveling alone; it was rare to see a group of twenty like Lin Yi's making such noise. Many passersby glanced their way without malice and even nodded in friendly acknowledgment.
"Captain, someone has been following us," Douglas said with keen perception; he sensed a familiar presence lingering not far behind them for quite some time.
"Could it be they don’t trust us and sent someone to tail us?" Before Lin Yi could finish speaking, Pachy frowned; after all, when they first arrived in this city three days ago, Pachy had been the one negotiating with them. Now they were sending someone to follow them—wasn’t that clearly breaking their word?
Flower Cannon quickly turned around to look behind and indeed spotted someone standing awkwardly at the street corner. As this century's most formidable sniper—self-proclaimed—he almost fired a shot instinctively but then realized he didn’t have his sniper rifle with him at that moment.
"It doesn't look like it. That guy is too sleazy; he looks like someone who would just peek at women while they bathe," Flower Cannon remarked after a brief glance.
Lin Yi looked at the sleazy man that Flower Cannon pointed out, but all he could see was a blur, so he didn't feel the need to comment further. Often, Lin Yi tried to be a person who learned to be content. Since there was no Zombie threat at the moment, why bother with so much?
"Let's go see what we can buy. We're rich now! Hahaha!" Lin Yi laughed exaggeratedly while playing with the gold in his hands.
At that moment, a strange scene unfolded!
A shadow flashed past Lin Yi's side, and the gold he was toying with vanished without a trace! Lin Yi didn't freeze in shock; he immediately looked around but saw no one else.
"Who just ran by and stole my gold?" Lin Yi felt frustrated, as if a lump of anger was stuck in his chest.
"Captain, I just sensed an energy fluctuation, but it's very different from what I know!" Douglas said with his eyes closed, focusing on adjusting his mental energy.
Many people had witnessed the earlier scene, but no one had seen clearly what happened; they only knew that the gold in Lin Yi's hand had suddenly disappeared. When they tried to inquire further, it felt like they had fallen into an ice cellar—was this some kind of ghostly encounter?
Lin Yi suspected that it was the person who had been following him earlier, but when he looked back, that person was still standing there motionless, albeit in a rather odd posture.
"Captain, there's something going on!" Douglas suddenly broke into a sweat, seemingly having exhausted too much mental energy. Fortunately, his complexion wasn't too pale; he could still hold on.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yi looked around in confusion and noticed that aside from their odd behavior, there was nothing particularly unusual about the people nearby.
"Wait," Douglas said as he closed his eyes again, ignoring the puzzled expressions of those around him.
Suddenly, a strange sound echoed in front of Lin Yi. It sounded almost painful, as if something were desperately struggling. The noise sent chills down Lin Yi's spine.
At that moment, the gold that had disappeared for over a minute suddenly reappeared, floating in front of everyone. Beneath the gold was a dark mass that seemed to be supporting it. However, as the "squeaking" sound grew louder, that dark mass appeared to tremble violently as well.
While everyone was confused, a painful scream suddenly came from behind them! Wu Hao turned around and saw that it was the same person who had been following them earlier!
"Let’s check it out!" Wu Hao signaled to Jerry, Witerson II, and Jimmy. Having been part of the Eight Departments before, Wu Hao had seen many bizarre things. So when he noticed the strange behavior of the person behind them and combined it with what had happened earlier, he quickly became aware that these two events were definitely connected.
As everyone remained puzzled, the shadow supporting the gold slowly expanded until it took on a human shape. However, at this moment, the figure was struggling desperately to break free from its restraints. But Douglas's mental energy had become quite powerful under Wu Hao's targeted training; all of the figure's efforts were completely in vain.
"Damn it, what kind of monster is this?" Lin Yi was startled by the situation before him, completely oblivious to Li Qiweng pinching him for his foul language.
"It's not a monster; it should be a person's shadow!" As someone who had witnessed many strange occurrences, Wu Hao's judgment was the most authoritative at that moment.
"A shadow of a person? Could it be that this shadow has undergone Corpseification and can move freely?" Lin Yi immediately thought of Zombies, as only those terrifying Corpseifications could explain how this strange shadow was formed.
"Boss, Mr. Wu's judgment is correct; this is indeed a shadow, and it's the shadow of this guy." At that moment, Jerry had brought over the one who had been stalking them and screaming madly. However, under Jerry's mysterious mental influence, he had already revealed his greatest secret.
Just then, the shadow that had been struggling began to calm down. Douglas opened his eyes and stopped binding the shadow. The shadow naturally returned to its original owner's feet, becoming indistinguishable from an ordinary person's shadow.
Although Lin Yi was shocked by the scene before him, it couldn't compare to the allure of gold for him. However, just as Lin Yi picked up the gold that the shadow had discarded, it was snatched away by Li Qiweng without a word of explanation. Lin Yi was furious, but it didn't have much effect; he could only vent his anger on the owner of the shadow.
"Call the police!" Lin Yi couldn't be bothered with anything else.
"No, please don't call the police!" The captured individual suddenly snapped out of his daze. Hearing Lin Yi's intention to call the police, he quickly begged for mercy.
At that moment, Lin Yi noticed that the person was quite young, with a dirty face streaked with tears. Although Lin Yi was cold-hearted when dealing with Zombies, he still felt a great deal of sympathy for a poor soul like this.
"Then let's take him back!" Lin Yi had no intention of wandering around any longer. Moreover, they had attracted quite a bit of attention from others, so they could only take this tearful individual back with them.
