As Barack's words echoed, a thunderous applause erupted from the crowd. Although everyone had already guessed the outcome before it was announced, the eyes directed at Lin Yi were still filled with envy. This kind of honor was not something everyone could attain!
In an instant, Lin Yi became the center of attention once again, the spotlight shining around him. Under the soft lights, he sparkled like the brightest star.
At that moment, a full-body image of Lin Yi was projected onto the stage, flanked by two other Mercenary Captains: Beatrice and Wang Zijun. However, Lin Yi felt something was off about his photo; upon closer inspection, he realized it was an old picture from when he was still an employee in Lion City, and he looked a bit chubby!
"Now, let's invite our three Captains to the stage to receive their awards. This time, the rewards are provided by our Mercenary Alliance! If these three Captains can continue to persevere in the African Region and secure a spot in the top three for the year, we will also offer generous rewards!" Barack gestured for them to come up. However, Wang Zijun did not come personally; instead, Alyah came to accept the award on her behalf. Wang Zijun and her bodyguard named Adelaide had hurriedly left earlier, having spent Contribution Points to rent a flying vehicle.
Lin Yi walked up directly, feeling somewhat uneasy as it was his first time facing so many direct gazes. But soon he relaxed; aside from Li Qiweng and David, he regarded everyone else as zombies. Strangely enough, Lin Yi found it easier to look at zombies than at people.
"Captain Lin is quite impressive this time. You've actually become number one and earned the title of Quarterly Mercenary King!" Beatrice whispered beside him, her tone clearly filled with envy.
According to reason, their Golden Mercenary Corps should have been the strongest force; even their various branches could sweep away other mercenary groups. Yet with the emergence of numerous elite mercenaries one after another, glory seemed to drift further away from the Golden Mercenary Corps! Many sighed at this unpredictable turn of events.
"Beatrice is not bad either; I fought hard for this achievement!" Lin Yi recalled every battle that flashed through his mind and felt a surge of emotion. It was a combination of luck and strength that led to his current success. However, Lin Yi always believed that this was why he dared to fight.
"Lin Steward is joking. With your title of Mercenary King this time, you might be able to further elevate your status within the Mercenary Alliance!" Beatrice's tone became more respectful; she understood more about the situation within the Mercenary Alliance. Lin Yi was still very young, but his achievements this time were enough for him to take a step further.
"Beatrice is right. Let's go ahead and receive our awards."
At this point, the three had reached the award stage. Alyah wore a worried expression and remained silent. Even when she saw Barack, she could only muster a forced smile.
"Now let's invite our African Union Chairman Mr. Derman to present the awards!" Barack announced loudly as a bald man stepped out from the shadows.
This bald man was none other than Deman, whom Lin Yi had encountered before—the commander of the Central Defense Zone who had become an arch-enemy of Froeman!
Lin Yi noticed that Deman's aura had become even more elusive than it had been two months ago; however, he could be certain that Deman's strength had improved once again.
A fleeting hint of something unusual crossed Deman's face, but he quickly approached Lin Yi with a warm smile and embraced him.
"Captain Lin has truly not disappointed us; you did an excellent job this time!" Deman's voice was deep and resonant, making Lin Yi feel as if his ears were buzzing.
"This is all thanks to everyone's brave efforts; I merely contributed my part," Lin Yi replied, sensing that this African Alliance Chairman didn't seem as pleased as he appeared.
Deman patted Lin Yi on the back, then offered a few encouraging words to Beatrice. Finally, he exchanged a symbolic handshake with Alyah before proceeding to present the awards.
Due to the current state of affairs, the awards for the three were quite simple: a Soldier's Fist Trophy, an Honor Certificate, and a Contribution Point Card. Lin Yi looked at the numbers displayed on the card's screen and was genuinely shocked; this was real wealth!
However, Lin Yi received one additional award—a gold-foiled certificate embedded in a silver base, inscribed with the words "Mercenary King." Below it was a line detailing the awardee's competition area and their battle achievements.
The award ceremony turned out to be even simpler than Lin Yi had imagined. The speeches from the three recipients lasted no more than a minute each. Following that, there were rewards from the City Defense Force for the top three winners, while subsequent announcements would be made elsewhere.
Once Ambo concluded the meeting, Lin Yi had just stood up when Alyah stopped him.
"Captain Lin, may I have a word?" Alyah's voice was somewhat hoarse, and her face appeared weary.
The inevitable had come; Wang Zijun had left in a hurry, leaving everyone feeling quite surprised. When Jiao Jiao handed over the information to Lin Yi, he tried to contact Wang Zijun but found that her number had become inactive. Now, seeing Alyah's forlorn expression, it was clear something significant had happened.
As the attendees began to exit in an orderly fashion, Lin Yi and his group were among the first to leave since they were seated in the front row. Alyah gestured for them to board her vehicle, which headed straight for the Pacific Mercenary Corps' base.
In less than five minutes, Alyah maneuvered through the crowded streets and arrived at the base. It was only then that Lin Yi realized how hastily Wang Zijun had departed; she had left with only Adelaide! The large military camp was already filled with mercenaries who appeared ready for immediate deployment.
"Captain Lin, we will be departing shortly. I came to find you because we need your help in eliminating zombies in the Pacific region!" Alyah stated directly without hesitation.
Lin Yi's unit had undoubtedly reached the level of top-tier mercenary groups. It was unquestionable that during battles involving fewer than a million zombies, his team would be a decisive factor in achieving victory!
After hearing Alyah's request, Lin Yi did not respond immediately; instead, he rubbed his nose and said, "Australia has basically been free of zombies. Why do you still need our support?"
Australia is isolated in the Southern Hemisphere, surrounded mostly by small islands except for New Zealand. Although the Zombie Crisis swept across the globe, Australia remained relatively unaffected due to its vast land and sparse population.
"That's right; Australia has generally been safe until now, which is why many who couldn't bear the zombie disaster have immigrated here! However, just recently, the Zombie Virus has suddenly spread rapidly! Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne are at ground zero; now the zombie situation is becoming uncontrollable."
After receiving notification from her husband yesterday, Jiao Jiao rushed back immediately; they are in urgent need of support! The speed at which this Zombie Virus is spreading is alarming—everyone is caught off guard," Alyah exhaled deeply after speaking, clearly overwhelmed by the situation.
Lin Yi felt a sense of dread; zombies on the African continent had just been nearly eradicated when Australia fell into chaos within such a short time frame. The zombies' deployment strategy proved to be remarkably prescient; this victory might merely be a minor setback for them. If it weren't for their trump card—the Base Laser Cannon—who knows which side would prevail?
"You know our team's capabilities; dealing with large-scale zombies isn't something one or two mercenary groups can handle!" Lin Yi thought uncertainly. His current plan was to pursue and eliminate any remaining zombies on the African continent; he wasn't keen on heading to the Pacific Theater!
Alyah wiped her eyes and, with a hint of sobbing, said, "The reason Wang Zijun rushed back so urgently is that her younger brother was eaten alive by a Zombie.
That child was only seven years old. I watched him grow up, and now he’s just gone. I can hardly imagine how things could have come to this."
Originally, Wang Zijun had planned to take Alyah back with her, but on one hand, Adelaide was not good at communication, and on the other hand, Alyah couldn’t bear to see that boy, whom she regarded as her own, lost like this. So they chose to postpone their return.
"I need to go back and discuss this with my companions; it concerns their interests as well. You must understand that we are already familiar with the African Region. Recklessly changing regions might not be appropriate," Lin Yi said. He was not a cold-hearted person, but this was not just about him; he needed to consider more.
"Alright, Captain Lin. This is also what Wang Zijun suggested. I hope you think it over carefully. If you come to a decision, feel free to contact us!" Alyah said as she turned to leave. However, at the last moment, it seemed she remembered something and pulled out a briefcase from her clothes, handing it to Lin Yi.
"This is for you from Wang Zijun. You’ll have different thoughts after you see it!"
Lin Yi took the bag and was about to open it when Alyah added, "Wang Zijun, you’d better not look at this document in front of outsiders; it’s quite significant."
Lin Yi paused for a moment but nodded and said, "Take care!"
With that, Lin Yi pulled Li Qiweng and David along and left. With the enhancement of the War God Suit, the three of them vanished in an instant.
Upon returning to the camp, without even having time for small talk, Lin Yi immediately called everyone together for a meeting. Regarding Alyah's or Wang Zijun's opinions, everyone unanimously expressed their opposition! After all, everyone knew that going into an unfamiliar place for battle could very likely lead to unexpected changes.
