The atmosphere was somewhat oppressive. Throughout their journey, the group had repeatedly faced life-and-death situations. Although they had managed to survive time and again, the sacrifices made along the way were enough to drive anyone to despair.
"Boss, while our combat ability may not be great, we still believe we can help you with some things!" Roots, one of the twin brothers, said somewhat unhappily. At this competitive age, he naturally didn't want to be underestimated.
"I know, but if this operation gets exposed, I really won't have enough confidence to come back for you! So it would be best for you to leave now; that would be the greatest help."
Dealing with a large-scale encirclement force, Lin Yi knew that the twin brothers and Renesmee could provide significant assistance. Even Tina could unexpectedly cause trouble for the enemy! However, precisely because of this, Lin Yi was even more reluctant to see them get hurt.
"Boss, really, after all these years of following you around, we know what kind of person you are. So we trust you. No matter what happens, if you act alone, it would mean you don't trust us!"
Renesmee's deliberately dirty face couldn't hide her beautiful features, nor could it conceal the pair of soft white mounds on her chest that often attracted lingering glances from those with ill intentions.
Lin Yi rubbed his temples in frustration and said, "Alright, I really don't have much confidence. I don't even have a plan for escape! I'm just betting that the Mercenary Alliance still needs me; I'm not going to die so easily!"
"Boss, you know it's a gamble, but with a gamble comes the risk of losing. We know you're innocent, but others don't. Do you really want to carry the infamous title of Zombie for the rest of your life?"
Nicolas looked at Lin Yi with an unprecedented seriousness; even his gaunt face seemed less amusing than usual.
"Fine then, let's come up with a plan. We'll act tonight!" Lin Yi nodded helplessly. Soon after, they arrived at a gathering place for wanderers.
This was a no-man's land where Lin Yi and his group didn't have to worry too much! They waited until nightfall, and just before setting off, Renesmee signaled for the twin brothers to cast an illusion spell to temporarily send these wanderers into a dreamlike state.
"Boss, just in case, you should take this!" With that, Renesmee produced a piece of transparent crystal emitting cold air from her delicate hand.
"This is an ice crystal formed from my condensed energy. Since you can absorb Flame Crystals, this ice crystal should be no problem! Of course, once you absorb this Energy Crystal, I will be able to sense your location at any time!"
Renesmee understood Lin Yi's strange ability to absorb energy. This was why she was willing to expend her own energy to create an ice crystal for him—more abilities meant more chances of survival!
Lin Yi nodded and reached out to take it. The next moment, something miraculous happened: as soon as the cold crystal touched Lin Yi's palm, it seemed as if it wanted to merge into his body and quickly dissolved completely within his hand.
At that moment, Lin Yi's entire body was enveloped in a layer of ice crystals. But soon after, a flash of red light appeared on him, causing those ice crystals to vanish as if they were hiding children.
Lin Yi himself was baffled by this ability to absorb others' energy for his own use. The first time he had used someone else's energy was with Lulu's dark energy. That energy suited Lin Yi's attributes perfectly; however, he couldn't comprehend how to absorb and utilize other types of energy.
"Did you absorb it?" Renesmee looked at Lin Yi in surprise, her face filled with disbelief. She knew he could absorb energy but hadn't expected him to do it so quickly.
"Yes!" As soon as Lin Yi spoke, a wave of cold air emanated from his mouth. Fortunately, Renesmee was quick enough to absorb that burst of energy immediately.
Lin Yi closed his eyes and began to control the energy within his body, familiarizing himself with the newly acquired ice power. However, he was curious about the Flame Crystal inside him, which seemed indifferent to the new "companion."
This indifference was a good thing, and Lin Yi didn't want to dwell on it. Once he confirmed that he could manage the energy within him, he immediately split his focus into two directions.
Lin Yi headed straight for the Mercenary Alliance headquarters, while Renesmee and the others went to their designated locations for support, just in case.
Although Lin Yi had only been to the Alliance's headquarters once, the route was deeply etched in his memory. This time, he was well-prepared; he knew that during this period, the one stationed at the Mercenary Alliance was none other than Chairman Cook, someone he was familiar with.
Lin Yi cautiously spread out his Psychic Power. The Mercenary Alliance was heavily guarded, naturally housing many skilled individuals. However, Lin Yi believed that there weren't many whose Psychic Power exceeded his own here, and those who happened to be present were likely not a threat. Even if there were, Lin Yi was confident he could escape.
Still, Lin Yi did not let his guard down. He used the cover of night to conceal his figure while conducting a meticulous search. He had long memorized Cook's aura and would not mistake it.
After just a few breaths, Lin Yi found no trace of Cook but did encounter an old acquaintance. This person had also reached Nine Star Level combat power, but Lin Yi could sense that he could easily overpower him.
Inside the Mercenary Alliance building, aside from some clerical staff handling intelligence work, there were armed patrols numbering in the dozens. Most of these patrol members were between Three-Star levels, with the leader at Seven Star Level combat power.
The last time Lin Yi visited the Mercenary Alliance, his own strength was merely at Six Star level. Back then, he sensed that there were quite a few high-level combatants at headquarters; however, now there seemed to be only these few individuals, which puzzled him.
But Lin Yi couldn't afford to think too much about it now. This place was a den of danger, yet it was also where he could find Cook. If Cook had left, Lin Yi truly wouldn't know where else to look for him.
In the next moment, Lin Yi donned a highly realistic mask resembling Graham. Graham was Eurasian; although he had a European physique, his hair and eyes were black, making it suitable for Lin Yi's disguise. As for his skin tone, Lin Yi made sure to cover himself completely without any immediate issues.
Taking a deep breath, Lin Yi pulled out a badge from his pocket that faintly reflected golden light—it was the insignia of Vice Chairman. Although many of his titles had been revoked, this Vice Chairman title seemed to have been forgotten by everyone! It was precisely because of this that Lin Yi placed his last hope on the Mercenary Alliance.
Lin Yi adjusted his emotions as he stepped out from the darkness but waited until the patrols moved away before proceeding. There was no one at the entrance—only surveillance cameras. However, Lin Yi knew these cameras couldn't detect his aura and felt no concern.
Next, Lin Yi presented his badge and scanned it at the entrance recognition area; the door opened silently.
The entire hall was dark except for occasional flickering lights that indicated how vast this building truly was!
Once again, Lin Yi expanded his Psychic Power; he needed to find out what was happening with the higher-ups here; otherwise, he might never clear himself of the charges against him.
Soon enough, Lin Yi discovered that his Psychic Power could not penetrate into the basement. He had previously fought Anthony in that basement; it was during that duel that he joined the Mercenary Alliance and became one of their Butlers.
However, now it felt as if the basement had vanished entirely. The Psychic Power he projected seemed blocked by something and could not seep through at all.
With all his might focused on penetrating it, Lin Yi believed he could break through; however, such strong fluctuations would likely attract attention from Super Experts very quickly.
With no other choice, Lin Yi relied on his memory and headed towards the basement, convinced that something was happening down there. However, after just a few steps, he sensed a figure rushing towards him, seemingly looking for him.
Lin Yi knew that at this moment, he was Graham, and without hesitation, he stopped. But the next moment, he realized that the person approaching was Anthony! However, Anthony no longer carried his usual arrogance; instead, he exuded a maturity that came from the passage of time.
"Graham, why are you here? You're not on duty today," Anthony said as he quickly approached, clearly already aware that "Graham" had arrived.
Lin Yi remained silent; in fact, he couldn't speak at all without revealing himself. He pointed towards the basement and made a shushing gesture.
Anthony frowned slightly but didn't press further. He simply nodded and left on his own.
Lin Yi dared not waste any time. In an instant, he blurred and appeared at the entrance of the basement. He had the necessary clearance to access this area and easily passed the verification before slipping into the elevator that descended downwards.
The basement seemed to stretch deep below ground. Lin Yi felt like he waited for several dozen seconds before the elevator jolted slightly and came to a stop. The doors opened, and Lin Yi stepped forward, moving ten meters ahead.
Though the basement was pitch black, Lin Yi's vision surpassed that of an ordinary human, so he felt no discomfort at all.
Suddenly—
As Lin Yi focused on searching for someone, a loud crashing sound erupted behind him! He quickly turned around only to find that the entrance he had come through was now blocked by a massive metal door!
