Federation Calendar Year 996, Luminous Star, Death Valley.
“White Contract! Do you really have to go for complete annihilation?” Luminous Star was the planet closest to the Blue Seal Empire in the Federation West District. At that time, it served as the frontline headquarters of the Federation. However, over three hundred years ago, a great war between both sides nearly returned this planet to its primitive state. Death Valley, once a flat expanse, transformed into a massive basin over a thousand meters deep. Those who were unable to evacuate the headquarters at that time became mere dust of history along with the land. Even after three hundred years, life had yet to return here; only countless vibrant yet highly toxic Soul-Devouring Flowers bloomed across the valley. A story circulated that these flowers were manifestations of those who had gone missing back then. At this moment, a blood-soaked Middle-Aged Man in Military Uniform stood in the valley, gripping a gleaming long knife, his face twisted in rage as he shouted towards a certain direction.
Yet, looking around, there was no one else in Death Valley besides the middle-aged man, creating an eerie atmosphere.
“When you surrounded my Eagle's Pride Peak with your shadow guards back then, you never thought about leaving any leeway, did you?” After a few seconds, a faint voice echoed through the valley. The voice was strange and seemed to come from nowhere, filling the valley with its hoarse and cold tone.
The middle-aged man gasped for breath, clearly at his limit, but he remained extremely Cautious. He did not want to die just yet. The man known as White Contract was formidable, but he still had trump cards left. If he could just hold on a little longer, he could escape to the Blue Seal Empire.
“At that time, I was bound by duty; I had no choice!”
The middle-aged man struggled to calm his breathing. He needed time to stabilize his injuries. Although his recovery ability was strong, his opponent's attack power was even greater.
“Hmph! All I know is revenge for grievances. Do you think I would let you leave alive?” The ghostly voice rang out again, yet its owner still did not reveal himself.
The middle-aged man looked around nervously; he knew that as an assassin, his opponent wouldn’t waste words like this. He had already observed the surroundings and found no one else lying in ambush. Now that he needed to recover from his injuries, he welcomed the chance for more dialogue.
“When did you become so kind-hearted, White Contract, that you would seek revenge for the dead? You’re just taking advantage of those people; why pretend to be so righteous?” The middle-aged man's breathing finally steadied somewhat. He believed that if he exerted himself now, he could temporarily shake off White Contract.
Without hesitation, he noticed that his empty right hand now held a Phase Gun. Then, a brilliant red beam shot toward an empty space.
At that moment, the middle-aged man's figure blurred and then vanished completely. But the next instant, a painful scream echoed through Death Valley. The previously vanished middle-aged man suddenly reappeared; however, his injuries had worsened significantly—his body charred and flickering with electricity.
"Damn it..."
At this moment, the middle-aged man had already realized that the White Contract was not just wasting time with him, but was secretly laying an ambush. In the next instant, his previously bloodied face twisted into a snarl. He raised his left hand, wielding a long knife, and in an instant, an invisible wave of energy shot out in all directions along with his blade.
"Zzzzz—" The sound of electric currents colliding echoed through the air, and suddenly, the once silent valley erupted with explosions. The highly toxic Soul-Devouring Flowers began to swirl amidst the blasts. In an instant, the entire valley was filled with the flower's red petals, which carried a deathly aura reminiscent of the bloodstains on the middle-aged man's body.
"Go—" he shouted as he surveyed the chaotic scene around him. With that roar, a surge of energy radiated outward, shredding the floating Soul-Devouring Flowers to pieces. The long knife in his hand was not idle either; he swung it downwards, and the ground before him split open like a cake, leaving a gash several dozen meters long.
At the same time, the middle-aged man dashed towards the edge of the valley. Suddenly, he felt a wave of unease wash over him. Years of combat experience had taught him to trust this instinct; just as that feeling arose, his figure blurred again. Almost simultaneously, a massive crimson beam, thick as an adult's thigh, descended from above and struck where he had just been standing.
"Base Laser Cannon!" The middle-aged man had already escaped from the attack's trajectory and reappeared in another location. For a super strong individual like him, sensing danger had become second nature. Even when targeted by a Laser Cannon attack, he could feel the impending threat in advance.
Before he could say anything further, a Crimson Light Beam struck where he had just stood. In an instant, a dark hole appeared at that spot.
"Hmph, do you really think you can kill me with these weapons?" The middle-aged man certainly would not die so easily; he had already evaded the Base Laser Cannon's strike.
In the next moment, dozens of Crimson Light Beams filled the once blue sky. These Laser Beams quickly formed a dense coverage point that bombarded his position! However, as the barrage from the Laser Cannons ceased, his figure reemerged. Although his injuries had nearly healed before, he was now battered once again. While the Laser Cannons hadn't directly hit him, his back and right arm bore fresh crimson wounds; those areas were scorched black from the blasts.
"Hahahahaha! White Contract, you will never kill me!" The middle-aged man laughed maniacally, panting heavily as he gripped his long knife with a slightly trembling left hand. Although he could sense the targeting of the Laser Cannons, being bombarded by such concentrated fire while not at his peak state inevitably resulted in some damage.
"Poof—" Just as his words fell from his lips, a black-red liquid erupted from his mouth. This liquid carried a strong stench that was nauseating to anyone who caught a whiff of it.
