"Come on, don't be so calculative!" With that, Xiao Yao Hao raised his fist and struck at Xue.
Xue instinctively tried to dodge, causing Xiao Yao Hao's punch to miss. Xue stared at Xiao Yao Hao, and the atmosphere suddenly became a bit awkward.
"Hey, I was just trying to test you, to see what you're capable of. Don't worry, now that I know your skills, I won't sneak attack you again," Xiao Yao Hao said with a grin as he withdrew his hand.
"I wonder what Master has for me to do," Xue replied earnestly.
"You really look quite annoying with that serious face of yours. Forget it, I suppose being like this makes you reliable," Xiao Yao Hao said disdainfully as he looked at Xue. He then walked over to the table and picked up a brocade box.
"This here is the Solidifying Pearl you've been longing for. If you can help me get this matter done well, then this will be yours," Xiao Yao Hao said as he opened the brocade box. Xue stepped closer; indeed, it was the Solidifying Pearl. Inside the luxurious box lay a black pearl quietly resting there. At first glance, it seemed utterly ordinary, lacking even the luster of a common pearl. However, Xue immediately recognized it as the genuine Solidifying Pearl, radiating a unique pure golden glow that was invisible to ordinary eyes.
"You can count on me." The three short words revealed Xue's confidence in handling whatever task Xiao Yao Hao would assign him. No matter what conditions Xiao Yao Hao proposed, he would be able to fulfill them.
"Great!" Xiao Yao Hao admired Xue and closed the brocade box.
"But before that, I really want to know who you are, or who your wife named Yao Guang is. You see, since we've come to an agreement, I expect nothing but the truth," Xiao Yao Hao suddenly became serious. Deep down, he had a question that was crucial to this matter.
Upon hearing this, Xue's first reaction was that Xiao Yao Hao was indeed not as useless as he appeared. After all, how could someone capable of supporting the Xiao Yao Villa be as simple as he seemed? However, revealing his true identity was not an option, especially in front of mortals; it could lead to many troubles. Moreover, his identity was somewhat intimidating.
"My true identity is not convenient for me to disclose to you. But rest assured, I am not your enemy and will not oppose you. As for Yao Guang, she is just an ordinary person like anyone else—no different from you or others." Xue deliberately concealed Yao Guang's true identity; for now, she truly was an ordinary mortal and no different from them. This response should suffice for the time being.
Xiao Yao Hao stared sharply at Xue, trying to determine whether his words were true.
Xue seemed oblivious to Xiao Yao Hao's gaze, standing directly in front of him.
"Alright, since you are unwilling to reveal your identity, I won't press you. For now, I'll take your words at face value," Xiao Yao Hao said after observing Xue for a while, confirming that at least he had not lied about what he just said.
After a moment of silence, Xiao Yao Hao did not speak again. Xue understood that he was contemplating how to explain to him what was troubling him so deeply that he needed to think for so long before revealing it.
"Young Master Xue, does your wife possess any abilities related to the living?" After a long wait, Xiao Yao Hao finally spoke again, inquiring about Yao Guang.
"I do not understand what you mean by that," Xue replied, momentarily confused by Xiao Yao Hao's question. He could only ask for clarification, hoping for a clearer explanation.
"I just saw your wife. I heard her..." Xiao Yao Hao continued painfully, "I heard her calling a name from the tree." He fixed his gaze on Xue. "She called out many times—Liu Qing. And Liu Qing is the name of my deceased wife!"
Upon hearing this, waves of emotion surged within Xue, but he did not let it show on his face. Could it be that Liu Qing was mentioned during a conversation with Yao Guang and Xiao Yao Hao happened to overhear? This could lead to complications; how would he explain this? Xue thought helplessly that he had been too careless.
Xue's reaction puzzled Xiao Yao Hao. "You don't seem surprised by my words. So, Yao Guang really can see the dead? Did she see Liu Qing? Is it really Liu Qing?" The mere possibility excited Xiao Yao Hao, causing him to speak rapidly.
"Master, my wife can indeed see some things that should not exist in this world. If I am not mistaken, the woman she saw is indeed named Liu Qing," Xue said, realizing he could no longer keep this hidden from the visibly excited Xiao Yao Hao. Even if he tried to conceal it now, Xiao Yao Hao would seek out Yao Guang for clarification. Given Yao Guang's attitude towards him and the recent events, who knew what kind of chaos might ensue? It was better to admit it now and avoid unnecessary trouble.
Upon hearing Xue's confirmation, Xiao Yao Hao suddenly calmed down. Yao Guang had seen Liu Qing; Liu Qing was in this mansion, right beside him! His mind went blank; the thing he had longed for and the person he had missed were right beside him. Xiao Yao Hao could no longer hear his own breathing.
"How is she? Is she okay?" There were too many questions to ask, and he wished he could see her right now. All words felt pale, leaving only this one phrase.
"She should be fine," Xue replied. He noticed Xiao Yao Hao's agitation; the hand hidden in his sleeve trembled with excitement.
"She's fine, she's fine, that's good enough." He didn't ask to meet her, nor did he express a desire to talk to her. Just knowing she was okay was enough for him. What more could he wish for? After all this time, all he wanted was for her to be well, even hoping that one day they might meet again in the Underworld. Just seeing her would be good. But she probably wouldn't want to see him, and he had no face to demand a meeting. Xiao Yao Hao slumped in his chair, feeling utterly drained.
Xue observed Xiao Yao Hao's expression and understood it stemmed from guilt over Liu Qing. "She has amnesia!"
"What? Amnesia?!" Xiao Yao Hao shouted upon hearing this.
