Yama's Wedding
Xiao Yao Hao stumbled through the courtyard, his mind in a haze.
Suddenly, he stopped in his tracks and dashed forward.
"Young Master Xue, you have to help me. I'll give you anything."
The abrupt entrance of Xiao Yao Hao startled Xue and Yao Guang in the room. Yao Guang looked at the panting Xiao Yao Hao, who was far from the proud figure he usually presented. After running, Xiao Yao Hao's hair was disheveled, and his normally tidy clothes were now dirty and rumpled, as if he had fallen or scraped against something on the way. He looked like a beggar on the street. The only thing that seemed alive was the intensity in his eyes, wide open as if Xue would vanish at any moment.
Seeing Xiao Yao Hao in such a state made Yao Guang suppress his urge to argue.
He quickly pulled him to a chair and handed him a glass of water. "Calm down. Take your time. What do you need us to help you with?"
Xiao Yao Hao fixed his gaze on Xue, gasping for breath. "Young Master Xue, help me investigate the mastermind behind Liu Qing's death."
Xue looked steadily at Xiao Yao Hao. "Alright."
"But you must not hide anything from us." After a moment of thought, Xue added.
"Okay." This time, Xiao Yao Hao agreed readily.
"Then it's settled. We already know everything about Liu Qing's death, so there's no need for you to waste time explaining it to us."
Xiao Yao Hao stared at Xue in shock. Although he knew this man was unfathomable, he never expected that he could investigate the circumstances surrounding Liu Qing's death. Moreover, Liu Qing had lost his memory; how could he possibly know all of this?
"You don't need to be curious about how I know. I have my ways. Let's get straight to the point," Xue explained, noticing Xiao Yao Hao's confusion.
After struggling for a moment, Xiao Yao Hao said, "Actually, I've been investigating all along because I believe that Liu Qing's death and my mother's are not mere coincidences. Liu Qing could never have killed my mother, and everything happened too smoothly. Liu Qing supposedly killed my mother with his own dagger in his room, and the maidservants around my mother all unanimously pointed to Liu Qing as the murderer. Just when I was about to investigate further, the elders of the clan intervened dramatically and executed all the maidservants who should have been questioned. They even declared Liu Qing as the murderer without any interrogation. Everything happened so quickly, as if someone was scheming behind the scenes. Furthermore, when I went to find those clan members later, I discovered they had already been killed, and someone had deliberately set fire to eliminate all evidence."
"What? Weren't those people killed by you?" Yao Guang asked Xiao Yao Hao in surprise, hearing a completely different story from what Roux had told him.
Xiao Yao Hao smiled bitterly. "Those people were my last hope. How could I have simply killed them? By the time I arrived, they had already been murdered, and the fire was raging. I had no choice but to leave helplessly. Who would have known that later everyone would think I did it out of revenge for Liu Qing and committed such a treacherous act? But it doesn't matter now; whoever killed them just made it easier for them to die."
"Did you see anyone setting the fire?" Xue asked, tapping his long fingers on the table.
"No, by the time I got there, there were no living souls left. The killer left no survivors," Xiao Yao Hao replied helplessly.
"However, I can't shake the feeling that this murderer is someone close to me," Xiao Yao Hao said after some thought.
"How so?" Xue inquired.
"I later sent many people to investigate this matter, but whenever I had a lead, someone always got there first and cut off all traces. For instance, when I went to that ancestral hall, it should have been unknown to anyone else, yet someone managed to get there before me. The security at Xiao Yao Villa is very tight; outsiders can't get in at all. Therefore, the fact that this murderer has such timely information means it must be someone close to me," Xiao Yao Hao analyzed.
"You must have a suspect in mind!" Yao Guang noted that Xue used an affirmative statement rather than a question. Did Xiao Yao Hao know who the mastermind was?
"That's right; I do have a suspect. At first, I thought it was the butler, but after he died, I dismissed that idea. You know how large Xiao Yao Villa is; there will always be someone eyeing it."
Listening to Xiao Yao Hao, Yao Guang meticulously ruled out those who were not the murderer in his mind.
"After the butler's death, I began to suspect the Roux sisters again because I know that their mother left them a secret organization. Although it wasn't very powerful, it could be quite useful if someone wanted to exploit it. However, I didn't expect that both of them would end up dead as well." Xiao Yao Hao expressed a sense of injustice at this point.
Yao Guang looked at them, and one name became increasingly clear in his mind, right at the tip of his tongue. "So, it's Xiao Yao Yu, isn't it?" Yao Guang finally voiced this last name.
Seeing that Xue and Xiao Yao Hao did not deny it, Yao Guang found it hard to believe that Xiao Yao Yu—the timid person who always deferred to Xiao Yao Hao and had cried red-eyed when the Roux sisters died—could be the murderer they spoke of. It seemed impossible that someone who appeared so weak could be orchestrating such a complex scheme, stepping over others' blood to achieve their goals. Yet, Yao Guang understood that appearances could be deceiving; perhaps the weakness was merely a facade for Xiao Yao Yu.
"We still need evidence; our speculation is useless without it," Xiao Yao Hao said. "But up until now, I haven't caught him in any wrongdoing. After the deaths of the Roux sisters, I had people investigate Xiao Yao Yu thoroughly and found nothing unusual."
"I think you might be his next target," Xue quietly stated. "Although I don't quite understand why he would set such a large trap, I'm certain that you are his next objective."
"Then we need to prepare well; we absolutely cannot let him succeed," Yao Guang declared with determination.
"Yes, but we need to plan this carefully. We..."
The three of them were filled with resolve in the room.
