Yama's Wedding
“Head of the Family, what is this? We don't understand at all!” Jun Ruo's words left the brothers below looking bewildered. Did Jun Ruo mean to say that he was already dead? Then who was sitting in front of them now?
“Xue, what is going on?” Yao Guang, hearing Jun Ruo's words, wore a confused expression. Had Jun Ruo remembered something from before? Or had she never forgotten? If that were the case, why was she still here and hadn't vanished?
Xue shook his head. He had little understanding of the Chimeras and Specters in these mountains; they belonged neither to the realm of ghosts nor to that of spirits. In this place, they were something else entirely. Some things that were not understood by people were only natural.
Jun Ruo looked at the brothers below who were murmuring among themselves, a hint of sadness on her face. “Are you all going to continue deceiving yourselves? Haven't we already died?”
What? Everyone is dead? Jun Ruo's words left everyone in disbelief. How could that be? When did they die? These questions echoed endlessly in their minds.
“Boss, you're joking, right?” Old Five looked at Jun Ruo in disbelief. “Look, today is my big day; let's not joke around. It's not funny at all!”
Jun Ruo turned her gaze to Old Five, who was dressed as the groom. “Old Five, I'm sorry; I still couldn't give you a complete wedding this time.”
“Mo Yi, that's enough! You killed us twice; what more do you want?” Jun Ruo shot a hateful look at Mo Yi, pulling her gaze away from Old Five.
“Nothing much; I just came to see why you're still in this world,” the cruel words from Mo Yi no longer saddened Jun Ruo; her tears had all burned away in the great fire that day.
“Third Brother, how could you deceive me!” A voice came from outside the door.
Everyone turned to see another Mo Yi appearing. The two looked identical, with the same peach blossom eyes, yet they gave off different vibes—one dressed in fiery red and the other in pure white.
Jun Ruo looked at the newcomer and realized this was the Mo City she had seen before. Mo City and Mo Yi were twin brothers; one loved wearing red while the other preferred white. Their personalities mirrored these colors—one hot and one cold, one tense and one relaxed. Others might not recognize these brothers, but Jun Ruo could tell immediately; Mo City's right palm bore no birthmark like Mo Yi's.
“How can there be two of them?”
"These two look so much alike!"
Everyone was stunned as they looked at the two people who seemed like reflections of each other. What were these two doing suddenly barging into the Bandit Hideout?
"I just came to see if you were lying to me." Although speaking to Mo City, Mo Yi's gaze was fixed intently on Jun Ruo.
"Well then, now that you know I'm not lying, can we leave?" Mo City was in a hurry to pull Mo Yi away. If it weren't for his drunken state, he would never have let Mo Yi know that Jun Ruo was still alive during his drunken ramblings. In truth, Mo City himself was filled with doubts; he had been involved in that incident from the beginning. Having witnessed Jun Ruo's death with his own eyes, he had always felt guilty about it. However, not long ago, reports came back from scouts saying that everyone in Black Wind Stronghold was haunted, prompting him to come and take a look, only to unexpectedly find Jun Ruo and the others. He couldn't understand whether Jun Ruo was truly dead or not. According to the Taoist's words, she should have been dead. Yet now, this situation left him confused. Since leaving here that day, this matter had weighed heavily on his mind; no one dared to acknowledge it. As long as Jun Ruo was alive, it didn't matter if she didn't remember him. If that incident had just been a dream of his, it would have been even better. But unexpectedly, he had let Mo Yi know about this while drunk. It was truly a mistake. They had all merely been participants in that event; Mo Yi had personally killed Jun Ruo. Moreover, their relationship was... complicated.
"How can I leave!" Mo Yi pushed Mo City aside and said to Jun Ruo, "Since you traitorous scoundrels are still alive, I killed you once; I can kill you again!"
Jun Ruo looked at the cold Mo Yi and laughed. Nothing had changed; even if she died and came back to life, he would still be relentless in protecting the Mo Family's legacy. Indeed, the surname Mo belonged to the current emperor, while the surname Xiao was associated only with the former royal family.
"Mo Yi, do you think I will let you do as you please here?" Jun Ruo was no longer the same person she used to be. Although she didn't understand why she could still be alive after having died, she would not allow the past events to repeat themselves.
"Xiao Junru, I killed you once; I can kill you twice or even a thousand times!" The bloodthirsty thrill shone in Mo Yi's eyes; in his view, Jun Ruo was already a dead person.
"Third Brother, just let them go! You've already killed her once; do you really want to kill her again?" Mo City pleaded desperately with Mo Yi. He had always disagreed with Mo Yi's actions back then. Although they were from the former royal family, Jun Ruo and her people had always kept to themselves and hadn't committed any serious crimes; they only robbed some passing merchants but did not deserve such punishment.
"Get out of my way!" Mo Yi shouted violently at Mo City. "Someone take Mo City away and lock him up! No one is allowed to release him without my orders." Suddenly, many soldiers armed with knives rushed in from outside. Upon hearing Mo Yi's command, two of them stepped forward and took Mo City away.
"Mo Yi, let me go! Let me go..." Mo City's struggles were futile against the elite underlings of Mo Yi; soon enough, he was taken away by the two soldiers.
"Now that the troublesome one is gone, it's just us left." Mo Yi turned around to face Jun Ruo.
"Mo Yi, call off your men; let's have a fair duel between us." Jun Ruo looked at those soldiers; even at this point, it seemed that Mo Yi still wanted to eliminate them completely.
"Head of the Family, we remember now," Liu said with a mournful expression as he addressed Jun Ruo.
"Do you remember now?" Jun Ruo looked gently at Liu.
Everyone nodded, recalling the moment when Mo Yi's soldiers appeared. It was then that they remembered—the red torches were the true culprits of their deaths. They had not left since they died; it was because some wishes remained unfulfilled. Old Five's wish was to marry the Mute Girl, while Liu's wish was to stay with his mother. Everyone here had their own desires, and in that great fire, they all chose to forget the fact that they had already passed away.
"Now that you remember, let's leave. You've all been happy during this time, right? Don't worry, I've settled this matter, and I will leave home with you," Jun Ruo said softly, tears welling in her eyes.
Yao Guang watched as the once lively and cheerful group began to fade away slowly.
"Brother Xue, if I had met you in life, would my skills have improved? Perhaps I wouldn't have died so soon," Old Five joked, his farewell just as lighthearted.
Old Five waved goodbye to Yao Guang and Xue.
In an instant, their figures gradually disappeared.
"Young Master Xue, Madam, I'm sorry for involving you in this," Jun Ruo apologized to Xue and Yao Guang. Despite witnessing such a scene, neither of them showed any change in expression. They were truly admirable people; too bad Jun Ruo was already dead; otherwise, she would have wanted to befriend them properly.
"It’s nothing."
Jun Ruo turned to Mo Yi. "Come on, let’s settle this." (To be continued.)
