Yama's Wedding
"Big Brother, what should we do now?" Yao Guang looked at the immortal who was slowly departing, addressing Shu Dao.
"Let's head back first. We can discuss everything once we return to the palace."
With that, they soared through the clouds back to Yao Guang's palace.
At this moment, Xue had already finished his painting and was carefully hanging it on the wall.
In the painting, a woman leaned gracefully against a tree. A large moon hung in the sky, and under its illumination, the woman's complexion shimmered like jade, resembling a crescent moon with a soft glow, or snow piled on blooming flowers. She exuded an enchanting elegance, her demeanor calm and poised, with a gentle charm that captivated the heart. Her eyes sparkled like clear water, and as she glanced around, she radiated an air of refined grace that left onlookers in awe, feeling unworthy and hesitant to approach. Yet amidst her aloofness, there was an alluring quality that drew one in irresistibly. Upon closer inspection, this stunning beauty was none other than Yao Guang herself.
Xue stood at a distance, admiring his artwork.
Now, Yao Guang's room was no longer empty; with his painting and Yao Guang's depiction of herself, they complemented each other beautifully, appearing as a perfect pair. As he examined both paintings closely, an idea struck him. With a wave of his hand, he merged the two into one. The scene transformed into Yao Guang leaning against the tree, gazing at Xue's silhouette. The previously cold expression in Yao Guang's eyes became filled with tender longing.
This is how it should be, Xue thought as he nodded in satisfaction at the painting.
At this moment, Yao Guang had arrived at the palace door with Shu and pushed it open without thinking much.
To his surprise, upon opening the door, he saw Xue hurriedly trying to conceal something.
"Xue?" Yao Guang asked in confusion as he noticed Xue's face inexplicably turning red all the way down to his neck.
Yao Guang rarely saw Xue looking so shy and stared at him intently.
The several Star Lords had never witnessed the dignified Wheel King appearing so flustered either. As they approached Xue, Yao Guang and Shu finally noticed that the painting in Yao Guang's room had transformed into that of two lovers leaning on each other.
Yao Guang fixed his gaze on the altered painting with intensity.
The painting depicted the moment when Yao Guang secretly watched Xue leave on that day he was cast down to the mortal realm by Buddha. In truth, there were many things Xue was unaware of; for years, Yao Guang had quietly protected him from behind. She had seen Xue's back many times, but only this particular moment filled her heart with deep sorrow.
On that day, she saw Xue, all alone, heading towards the Underworld. Yao Guang knew that once Xue entered the Underworld, it would be difficult for them to meet again. She wished she could leave with him right then and there, but at that time, Xue was completely oblivious to Yao Guang's existence. It was then that she made a silent vow: no matter what, she would find a way to see Xue again.
Later, in her room, Yao Guang pondered over Xue's departure and decided to paint his silhouette. After finishing the painting, her heart ached unbearably, prompting her to take up arms and seek justice from Buddha. This led to many subsequent events, but it was precisely because of this that Yao Guang was able to reunite with Xue in the mortal realm and fulfill her wish.
As everyone gazed at the painting, Xue felt a wave of anxiety wash over him. He worried about whether Yao Guang would be angry for altering her artwork without permission. Yet deep down, he truly liked the changes he had made.
"You... you all came back?" As soon as the words left his mouth, Xue regretted them. This was the court; he was in Yao Guang Palace! It was only natural for them to return from Jade Emperor's place to Yao Guang Palace, but here he was, making their presence seem utterly bizarre.
"Who would have thought our esteemed Wheel King has such sentimental feelings!" The ever-spirited Kaiyang Star Lord teased Xue upon seeing his flustered state.
"I... I..." Xue stammered. "I was just waiting here in boredom and saw this painting in the room, so I added a few strokes!" Afraid they wouldn't believe him, he nodded vigorously and added, "Yes, that's exactly it."
"Alright, alright, we understand!" The usually composed Authority Star Lord nodded in acknowledgment of Xue's predicament and tried to help him out. However, his serious demeanor only made things more amusing as Xue appeared utterly flustered while Authority maintained a grave expression. The sight of them together caused the other Star Lords to burst into laughter.
"Hahaha! You guys are hilarious!" The others laughed uncontrollably; Kaiyang even doubled over on the ground holding his stomach. Although Shu didn't laugh as loudly as the others, the corners of his mouth betrayed him—he too found joy in this scene.
Confused by why his words had sparked such laughter among his peers, Authority turned back to look at Xue. Meanwhile, Xue felt increasingly embarrassed by the laughter surrounding him and dared not meet Authority's gaze.
In Yao Guang Palace, an unusual scene unfolded: Xue stood blushing furiously while Authority leaned back with his hands clasped behind him, staring in shock at the uncontrollable laughter of several Star Lords. It was hard for him to comprehend how such a situation could arise!
"Alright everyone, stop laughing," Yao Guang stepped in to mediate.
Xue looked gratefully at Yao Guang; he knew she cared for him. But when he raised his head to meet her gaze, he was taken aback. Although she tried to calm everyone down, she herself was laughing so hard that tears streamed down her face.
"Yao Guang! You!" Seeing her like this left Xue both amused and exasperated; he couldn't get angry at her nor could he ask her to stop laughing.
Yet seeing Yao Guang so happy made Xue feel that even if he lost face in front of everyone, it didn't matter. As long as Yao Guang was joyful, that was enough for him. With that thought in mind, he joined in the laughter with everyone else. This only puzzled Authority further—why were they all laughing? Was this situation really that funny?
Qian watched the others laughing joyfully, his expression still stern as he looked at them. This only made the others laugh even harder.
“Qian, you really are our joy-bringer,” Kaiyang said as he got up from the ground, the first thing he did was pat Qian on the shoulder.
Qian looked at Kaiyang with a helpless expression. Clearly, it was Kaiyang who was the joy-bringer among the Big Dipper Seventh Star; how did it turn into him being labeled as such?
Well, Qian also felt quite happy. Even if he didn’t understand what was so funny, seeing them so cheerful made him feel good too. It was rare for the Big Dipper Seventh Star to gather together and enjoy each other's company like this. Since they wanted to laugh, he let them laugh to their heart's content. Even if he didn’t get it, that was fine.
The other Star Lords saw Qian’s silly demeanor and laughed even more.
“Alright, alright, enough laughing! Let’s get down to business!” Fortunately, there were still some who were clear-headed among them. Shu looked at everyone’s smiling faces and allowed them a moment of indulgence. But soon after, he addressed them seriously.
When it came to serious matters, everyone composed themselves and began to listen quietly to Shu.
“Xue, now that you have left the Underworld, we won’t hide anything from you anymore. Besides, I already know that your feelings for Yaoguang are sincere,” Shu said as he looked at Xue.
“Mm!” Xue nodded in understanding towards Shu. Seeing Shu’s serious demeanor meant there was something important to discuss. Xue prepared himself; perhaps during their recent visit to Lingxiao Palace, the Jade Emperor had appointed the Big Dipper Seventh Star as commanders against the Dragon Clan. If that were true, then perhaps the light-hearted atmosphere would soon change.
As Shu spoke, a tense atmosphere began to fill the air. He paused for a moment before continuing, “Xue, I think you’ve guessed it already. Just now, the Emperor has appointed us, the Big Dipper Seventh Star, as commanders to descend and capture the Demon Dragon!”
Upon hearing Shu's words, Xue felt a clarity in his heart. He knew that the Jade Emperor would send the Big Dipper Seventh Star down to quell the rebellion; if not them, who else could be sent from this court? But Jade Emperor, what exactly do you intend? Since you have entrusted such an important task to the Big Dipper Seventh Star, why do you allow those deities to bully us at will? Xue felt increasingly perplexed by the actions of this Jade Emperor. It seemed that over the years, not only had his own thoughts changed but also those of the Jade Emperor had become more difficult to fathom.
“I believe that soon a war between the Dragon Clan and our court will break out. At that time, all of us from the Big Dipper Seventh Star will descend to restore order. What will you do here?” Shu asked Xue. It wasn’t that he was worried; it was just that even though Xue had left the Underworld and the West, his past identity still lingered. In these anxious times, one misstep could lead to irreversible regret. Shu didn’t want to see such a scenario unfold; on one hand, in his mind, Xue remained that hero who fought valiantly against demons; on the other hand, he was deeply moved by how connected Yao Guang and Xue were in their feelings for each other. He didn’t want a mistake to prevent these two from being together.
“Shu and Yao Guang, don’t worry! I won’t cause you any trouble!” Xue replied. If it weren’t for his concern for Yao Guang, he wouldn’t be staying in court right now.
Xue knew that his identity would inevitably pose a hidden danger in the future and might bring disaster upon the Big Dipper Seventh Star. However, his heart was filled with worry for Yao Guang; he needed to be by her side constantly to feel at ease.
“Xue, you know that's not what I meant!” Hearing Xue's response made Shu quickly interject; he feared Xue misunderstood his intentions.
"Xue, you know I would never think that of you!" Yao Guang spoke urgently. Although she had been silent for a long time, her eyes and thoughts had been revolving around Xue. The moment she pushed open the palace door and saw Xue standing there, a wave of relief washed over her heart. She even felt grateful that she would soon see Xue's presence.
After Xue made changes to her painting, Yao Guang became even more certain of Xue's feelings for her. After all, art reflects the artist; if there wasn't such deep emotion involved, Xue wouldn't be able to create such lifelike paintings. Every smile and frown of hers in the artwork was so vivid and lively, showcasing how much effort Xue put into it.
Listening to Yao Guang and Shu explain, Xue realized that the two had misunderstood her intentions. She didn't mean to blame them; rather, she needed to express her feelings to all the Star Lords present.
"Yao Guang, you don’t need to explain. I understand your good intentions," Xue said as she noticed the relieved expressions on Shu and Yao Guang's faces. "I just need to clarify my feelings. I only hope that during battles, you take care of yourselves and not worry about me. My identity will neither trouble me nor cause you any concern. Don't forget that even if I were to leave the Underworld and the West, no one in this world would dare to lay a finger on me!" Her words were not only firm but also carried an air of arrogance and pride that Yao Guang could sense.
It was rare to hear Xue speak with such confidence. For some reason, as Yao Guang watched Xue shine before her, her admiration grew even stronger. She loved seeing Xue so spirited in front of her, rather than the despondent figure from years ago.
"Xue, why would you say such a thing? You must know..." Xuán's words trailed off, but everyone understood his meaning. Although the West and the Underworld weren't powerful among the five realms, they were still two distinct worlds. Xue had always existed between these two realms, and the privileges granted to her were unlike those given to others. Yet now, it was unexpected for Xue to arrogantly claim she didn’t need the identities from both realms.
Xue turned to see the worried gazes of several Star Lords and felt a surge of emotion. He knew that if it weren't for Yao Guang's concern for these Star Lords who seemed indifferent towards him, he would still feel quite happy about their close bond.
"Have you forgotten? I'm neither a born deity nor a later deity; my true form is a pair of Wheels of Reincarnation!" Xue declared to them.
Upon hearing this, the other Star Lords were momentarily taken aback, while Shu let out a sigh of relief and nodded in agreement with Xue, saying, "So that's how it is; I had forgotten."
The others exchanged puzzled glances as they failed to grasp the riddle between the two. (To be continued.)
